Talking is something teenagers love to do and with changing time and technology, everything is changing. In 1990’s, teenagers use to communicate using SMS (Short messaging service) but then the time soon changed and the teenagers started using IM (Instant messaging) in 2000’s. Now, it’s neither SMS nor IM as they have started to use social networking sites for their communication (Grinter, Palen, Eldridge, 2006).
Studies have shown that right from the age of 12, kids are addicted to social media. Many teenagers have their account on social networking sites so that they can spend quality time with their friends and at the same time, they can also be updated about things that are going around. Girls and boys both have been using social media. Girls have been using social media to improve their prevailing relationships and boys have been using for making new friends and flirting (Duyn, 2007).
The teenagers between the ages of 12 to 17 are the ones who are affected the most by usage of social media. Research has shown that 63% of teens use internet and 59% of teens have created and used a blog. Many parents ask their children not to use any social media but that is not possible because their friends do that. Parents should sit with their children and explain them the pros and cons so that they can be safe (Spencer, 2012).
Kids at a younger age love to play outside in open but that is gone because these days, kids prefer to stay in their house and meet people via social media rather than that of face-to-face. It is very clearly evident that face-to-face communication is reduced to almost nil thus, the life is changing faster than what it used to be in the past (Sharp, 2009).
If a teenager tends to stay home without interacting with people around in the society then there are possibilities that they will lose their self-confidence and feel lonely. With the help of social networking sites, kids can interact with people and this will allow them to gain knowledge thus, making them feel confident about themselves. Kids cannot communicate all their problems with their parents or friends. There are many online help communities which are willing to help teenagers and seeking online help becomes an easy task as the person on the other end won’t know the real identity. The syllabus that is taught in school is limited to the books but the world doesn’t end there. With the help of the internet, the kids can explore all their topics of interest and thus, they can be ready to face the world at a younger age (ParentFurther, 2012).
Social media is a risky thing to deal with and hence, it needs to be tackled accordingly. Cyber bullying is one of the major problems that teenagers who have been using social media is facing. Kids don’t have the understanding to react to situations and hence, they act violently thus, leading to crime. The presence of social media has made the teenagers reluctant to things that are taught in classrooms. They believe that they can find everything on the internet so they are becoming more and more dependent on it. Kids don’t understand about scams but there are hackers who gain access to the computer network with the help of the kids. This allows the hacker to get all the information that they want (Osborne, 2012).
Social media can create an impact on the kids in a positive or negative way. Kids should understand social media completely before they use it so that they can safeguard themselves and their family from any danger. It is the sole responsibility of the parents to educate their kids. Parents should show examples of people who have been affected by the social media and so that the teenagers can think about, before they do anything on the social media. Social media can be a boon or bane but the user needs to decide on it.
