Q. Discuss the type of OHS&W risks or hazards that you consider that you are likely to encounter in a career in policing and discuss some of the preventive risk control strategies that can be employed to minimize them.
A. Each police department would be responsible in order to develop occupational health & safety (OHS) plans, procedures & strategies. The strategies should be implemented which would help in order to minimize the risk or hazards which might come in future.
The types of OHS&W risks or hazards which might be encountered in a career in policing could be as under:

Þ Recognition of the risk: The police officers should be well aware regarding the risks involved & have an in depth knowledge regarding the same. Various preventive measures should be taken in order to minimize such hazards.
Þ Implementation of the various strategies which would help in order to minimize or prevent stress & fatigue. Some of the strategies to be taken care of would include encouraging foot patrols, skip over time, improvise the diet by including vitamin B, enhance the technology, streamlining the entire procedures, allowing taking small naps during the nightshifts.
Þ Proper training should be imparted which would help the police officers to act proactive. Training should be such that, the officers should attain high levels of confidence. Re training sessions should be taken place which would help in order to update the knowledge. Training would also include various measures in order to reduce as well as resolve the conflicts.
Hence, various OHS approaches should be kept in mind to have a safe working environment as well as a sake work culture. The measures mentioned above would be quite helpful in order to prevent the number of injuries & increase the efficiency of the police officers.
