Police legitimacy can be described as the extent of the point of view of the public towards the legitimacy of the police. The term police legitimacy is often used for measuring the willingness of the public for being willing to be obeying and cooperating with the works of the police. It can be seen as being linked to the degree of support and cooperation that the public shows towards the efforts made by the police for fighting crime. The first chapter in the research would be the introduction to the subject matter. The chapter will also provide with the context to the study subject, the gaps that can be observed in the study and the problem statement. The chapter will further provide the readers with the aims and objectives of the study; and the questions upraised in perspective to the study. Chapter 2 would be the literature review. The chapter will also provide with the gaps present in the literature existing on the current study. Chapter 3 would be providing the readers with the methods through which the data would be collected and analysed.

Problem statement

The subject matter of police legitimacy has been researched widely and has further been the topic for many of the empirical studies conducted within the past few decades. The main reason for the abundance of the study of police legitimacy is because the subject area had been of a major concern for the policymakers since the modern police system had been found. The concept of the legitimacy of the police can be observed as being a complicated matter. There had been many differences in the opinions of the scholars towards the meaning and concepts of the subject matter of the police legitimacy. There has been an agreement between the scholars about the existence of the distinction between the empirical legitimacy and the normative legitimacy. This paper aims to provide the readers with a detailed analysis for the major areas of concern in the subject matter of police legitimacy. The concept of police legitimacy has been conceptualized and measured in multiple ways and the focus of the study has been mostly focussed on a few of the nations. The main problem of the subject matter of the research is that there is a lack of resources from different nations.

Research Question

The main focus in the study would be to answer these following questions: what is the relation between police legitimacy and successful deterrence of crime? How does police legitimacy impact procedural justice?

Research objective

The main objective of the research is to find out the relation existing between the police legitimacy and successful deterrence of crime and to find the impact that police legitimacy has on procedural justice.

Literature Review

The author Wall (2019) in his book The Chief Constables of England and Wales can be seen as analysis of the career of the Chief Constables who had been holding their office between the years of 1835 and 1995. In the book the author can be seen as illustrating the interaction between the police officers and politics in both the national and the local levels. Banakar and Travers (2014) in their book can be observed as putting their focus on the sociological theories and their critical approaches in the legal professions. The authors focus the effects that various social theories have on different legal professions and the impact that globalization have on such professions. In their book, the authors Quinney and Shelden (2018) can be seen as providing a critical observation towards the legal orders that can be observed as being present in the capitalist society by the help of the traditional Marxist perspective. The main argument of the authors in the book is that the main intention of the legal order is not the reduction of the crime or the sufferings but the maintenance of the class differences and social orders.

Gaps in literature review

The concept of police legitimacy has been conceptualized and measured in multiple ways and the focus of the study has been mostly focussed on a few of the nations. The main problem of the subject matter of the research is that there is a lack of resources from different nations.

Research methods

Data Collection

Data collection can be described as the gathering and measuring of numerous data over focused variables in a precise way. There are two methods for the assortment of data for study- primary methods and secondary methods. Primary sources for data collection can be seen as including interviews, surveys, group discussions, field works, and email communications through the help of the internet. The secondary sources is observed as comprising articles in any magazine or newspaper, movie or book criticisms, or articles that are mostly found in the academic journals which can be observed as deliberating or assessing new research works of other researchers or scholars (Watkins and Burton, 2017). As police legitimacy can be considered as a social as well as legal issue and is related to the point of view of the public therefore the study would be conducted with the help of both primary sources by way of group discussions, interviews and surveys and the secondary sources which include the books and the scholarly journals.

Data analysis

The current study would provide with a framework that is analytical in nature for studying the data that has been collected by way of the objectives in the current study. The study would be seen as exploring the dimensions and the implications of the topic. As the present study can be perceived as being chiefly investigative in nature consequently the research would be essential to be conducted with an open method in the literature as well as theoretical testing (McConville, 2017). The exploration of the data that had been collected is done in the research through the help of the quantitative method.

Conclusion

The subject matter of police legitimacy concerns with the extent of the point of view of the public towards the legitimacy of the police. The term police legitimacy is often used for measuring the willingness of the public for being willing to be obeying and cooperating with the works of the police. The paper aims to provide the readers with the socio legal issues that are present in the police legitimacy. In this context the paper will provide the readers with the introduction, research objectives and questions, literature review and gaps, and the methodologies for research.
