Wirting Assignment on: Victor Frankenstein
- Victor Frankenstein is the father of the monster, the monster which has been brought to life by its creator out of the scientific fascination of the creator. Frankenstein’s creation is mysterious and enigmatic in its own way, being the student of alchemy, studying at university of the Ingolstadt, he is forced to live in his isolated zone out of the forceful anxieties of experimentation he creates a monster. As soon as the experiment is seen in a ghostly form the creator abandons the same. The love which should been there between the creator and the created completely vanishes out of the scene. The abandoned creature is though monstrous in appearance and uneven is seen as a threat by his own creator and therefore it revives the feeling of spite in Frankenstein’s creation. The same can be seen as an outsider in the society by the very moment the creature born into the world. Just like for a new born baby the mother is the only world to him as he comes out her and can recognise the little around him only through a mother, similarly the creature is also like a new born son to Frankenstein, but in this case the result of his experimentation is too horrible to handle by Frankenstein that he immediately surrenders at his own and finds the way to run away from the situation (Zoë, K. (2010)). The situation goes more strange for Frankenstein’s creation as he is the one who is left to wonder in the wilderness alone and is torn between the materialistic world and the identity of the ‘monster’ which he has been given.
He is seen as an outsider by the society because the society only sees him as a creature that is not like them and is apart from their own manifestation as human beings. He is despised by the society and the society collectively abandons him along with the abandonment which he suffers through because of his own creator. One instance which makes him feel like an outsider is the episode where he stands by the house of the DeLaceys which is a rustic family and they who share love and affection among each other. The monster gets to eavesdrop the interaction going on the family, this way the reader is put to the platform where actually there is a sense of invocation of the feelings and the emotions in him, there is familial love which he could feel and reacted in a manner that made him feel much human. He felt as if he is protected and that as if he is going to be cared as an equivalent member of the society but he is the one who is despised by everybody else. So he even sees them as his ‘protectors’ because he might be deformed in shape but he is a genuine child who needs respect and the care in the society (Shelley, M. (2007)). The term ‘monster’ is the one which the society gives him and the assertion of this term along with the running away of the society from him makes him an alien creature with respect to everybody else in the society. Moreover, there have been instances that the only taboo in his ‘being’ is his horrible appearance, as he was only welcomed and treated right by a blind man, he is treated with generosity until the rest of the family members arrive back and bewildered by his ugly appearance they shoo the creature away (Fischer, A. (2000)).
Still, there was some hopeful thinking left in him that he saves a girl near the river, but still he is mistaken for the wrong deed and is shot at the shoulder. So, it cannot be said that the behaviour of the monster changed rapidly but it is that he acquired this behaviour because of the spite he experienced in the society. He was therefore made the outsider by the society itself and was forced to take up the more vengeful form as never before he wanted to take the revenge with his own creator now as there was a rage in him that why he was born if he was born a taboo in the society. In the social sense he is the outsider because he is not physically equivalent to many others kin terms of appearance and an average muscular strength. The physical features which are repulsive for the society become the obstacle in making the society realise that he is actually an infant at heart and wants care and affection. The element of duality can been seen as underplaying in the text of the novel as the monster only becomes a real monster when he is despised off the normality of life.
- The monstrous nature of the creature can be seen as the reflection of the nature of the relationships which have been probably turned chaotic whether in the past or they might have been disturbances in the present. Thus, monster is the physical manifestation of the problems which are under play. In the beginning of the novel only the reader gets explored to the interaction and the nature of that interaction among the family and the kinship. The kinship relationships in the novels are such which makes him relate to everybody in the family very closely and that Victor was always strong and gelled up with the few good relations he had, but as a confession Victor was always a short tempered one. He took up in consideration what he was supposed not to do, like when his father told him that Agrippa’s feelings were only a trash, it only put him question this fact and so he went on in isolation to more of his works. The relationship in the family was once close but it got disturbed by the changed priorities. The nature of Victor Frankenstein can be seen as responsible for the same because he changed his priorities in life by turning away into the isolated zone and giving all his time and passion to create something which would be very close to him. This distancing between the loving individuals of the family actually led to victor’s own downfall gradually. This was solely out of the greed for gaining knowledge even at the cost of the peaceful relationships which he had. His concentration has only been the knowledge which was substantial and thus it was even of more importance than even his own being. The relationship which he further formed with science and his anticipated creation was the one which led to the condition that a thing was born which was an outsider. One can say that aloofness from the natural being and moving away from the human capacity Frankenstein demolishes the basic humanly link ups with the society and moved to the wilderness of Germany (Flanagan, M. (2010)). Victor’s departure from home had been a decision which did no good for him, it only spoiled the existing links, that added to the grief of the family because of the death of the mother and the human relationship in the society was all blurred because he knew no one in Ingolstadt. This way the clash between the relationships came when the pursuit of knowledge became the only important thing for him who he thought could easily become the substitute for the familial relations in fact the destiny and the time turn the tables on Frankenstein when the kinship came into trouble and he lost everything. After going to Geneva then two years pass and he does not return to even see his family one can see that only the father and Elizabeth long to see him once but the others only think of him as a bad character in the family. This indicated that Victor’s sense of temperament and the responsibility towards the family had almost finished as the obsession of the knowledge overtakes him (Rosenberg, D. (2007)).
This condition which Frankenstein aspired for himself could not be seen as something directly related to the condition of making the monster and outsider, but yet it is responsible for making himself and outsider in terms of thinking beyond the human capacities (Benedict, D. (2011)). Probably he thought himself alien to the fact that he is only a human being who can use the imaginative faculty to the extent that he can think across horizons but to exercise an experiment so as to feel that he could altogether become the creator and make a creature it was probably over-confidence which distracted the nature of the relationship which he had formed with everybody else. The troubled relationships could be seen in the society when here was murder, strangling and the incidences of brutality which the monster. The troubled relationships were the ones which the society formed with the monster, by tagging him as socially different and not someone who can be given a space in the existing trends of the society. The one relationship which should have been respected by Victor Frankenstein is that he should have accepted his own creation and should have realised that it is also a part of him and he cannot directly abandon the creature (Shelley, M. (2006)). Though it seem that it is practically impossible to form a relationship with something who is not a human in the present form but only has a hart of a human there come many obstruction in simply recognising that there could be any potential ways to accept such a kind of kinship. His nature completely changed into a selfish one who would be wanted to know as the giver in terms of the relationship i.e. the only creator, in a way challenging the ways of god and the trend of the universe.
