Humans, in general, merely react to their environmental context

Many of us are of the belief that the behavior that people adopt is their own choice but in reality it is the environment which substantially impacts the behavior of a person. So be it a very simple thing like variations in temperature or an extreme situation like a war, everything that takes place around the humans put a profound impact on their behavior. It is the environment which influences the way we act or respond to a situation, our facial expression, the values which we accept, the manner in which we talk, the words which we use. Everything we do is the result of environment in which we grow. In the context of human beings, the environment can be defined as natural as well as manmade physical situations, the institutions, and the opinions and ideas with which human are surrounded. Thus environment hold a great importance for the humans. The smallest detail that constitute the life of a human being is impacted by the environment in which he lives. Though the choices made by the human beings as far as their goals are concerned  are not controlled by the environment but it definitely controls the choices and possibilities available to him.

If written history is to be believed, ancient Greek historian Herodotus expressed the concept of “Environmentalism”. In his expression, he laid the stress on the importance of geography on the development of Egyptian civilization. In his view point it was the distinctive geographical characteristics of the region which obstructed the development of vast and rich Egyptian culture of ancient times. In the 16th century, the importance of environment in the context of human behavior has been explained by the French political economist Jean Bodin.

Human behavior is influenced by environment at various levels. The behavior which is immediately displayed by a human being is the function of the settings in which it occurs. The manner in which people sitting in a room interact with each other is substantially influenced by the arrangement of furniture of that room. On a country level, the nature and type of environment in which people live for a long period influence their characteristic personality make-up. Racial differences in personality can to a large extent be traced to the influence of different environments to which people of different races have been subjected for generations (Moos 1976).

It is assumed that climate has a great influence on the temperament of individuals. People who belong to cold climate are supposed as more hardworking. In cold areas people are always in secured about the fact that they may get freezed and this sense of insecurity pushes them to work on continuous basis so that they are able to keep their bodies warm. In cold regions, people have to make advance plans. They have to accumulate food and firewood for winter season. In addition they have to prepare themselves for winters by making warm clothes and footwear. The adverse and skimpy atmosphere in which people have to live makes them aggressive and this aggressiveness leads to control of moral artificially. Naturally, in most of the cases one can observe development of linear intelligence in people belonging to these regions. The characteristics such as aggression, competition, exploitation and manipulation existing in such an environment make people more practical in their approach.

On the contrary, people belonging to warm climate are assumed to be more sluggish in nature. Characteristics like laziness and inertia influence their temperament. The perspired and fatigue characteristics present in the climate makes it very difficult and unpleasant to work. The changes in the season are very rare in tropic regions and extraction of resources is very easy in these areas. This kind of climate makes for an attitude of surrender and the approach to the environment is marked by fear and superstition.

In case of manmade environment the best example that clearly shows influence of the same on human behavior is the example of impact of environment on the development of behavior in case of children. Attitude and beliefs which they develop indicates the kind of environment that they prevail in. Evolution of gendered identities in a boy and a girl is an on-going process. A man can choose certain so called feminine habit (for example, cleanliness is generally associated with females, but a man can also have liking for clean and organised home) same way a woman can also choose some masculinities (for example, a girl may develop a liking for bikes which is termed as males’ toys). Social institutions like family and school, transfer many informal messages which ultimately lead to development of attitude and evolution of certain beliefs. A child is what he/ she see and experience. For example, from a birth of a child, parent start differentiating between a girl and a boy on the basis of their dresses (pink for girls and blue for boys), toys (cars for boys and dolls for girls) etc. In addition, various forms of media like books, advertisements, news paper, magazines and Television has a substantial impact in the formation of children’s attitudes and beliefs (Thorne, 1993).

In a video footage of a Child who was separated from any of the human contact at a very early age and lived an isolated life clearly throws a bright light on the fact that environment in which a human being lives holds the utmost importance on his/ her behavior. The video footage is about feral children who represent the most extreme case of environtalism. In lay man’s language a feral child can be defined as the child of a human being who has no contact with humans for large number of years and has lived an isolated life from a very young age. They have never experienced emotions such as care, love and most importantly has no idea about the human languages. Basic social skills such as using toilets, walking in straight manner etc which are generally taught to children during the process of enculturation are not present in Feral children. Most importantly they do not show any kind of interest in the human activities taking place around them.

The video footage is about Oxana Malaya who was rejected by both of her parent and started living a wild life with dogs. Somehow she managed to survive for six years before she was taken into care. She lived in a kennel with dogs for more than six years and one can see clearly that her behavior is influenced by them only. She is walking on both her legs and hands like a dog, eating like dogs and most importantly instead using any of the human language she is barking at people just like dogs. Her father as well as her mother totally abandoned her at her early age and this resulted making her a feral child.

There is no better way to conclude this essay than to quote TROM. According to him, things such as bad, criminal, lazy, brilliant people, thieves or racists do not have any existence, it is only the environment which predispose these behaviors in people. If the environment will be supportive, these behaviors will never evolve in the world.
