Introduction:

Occupational health and safety risk management is an important part of employee management and it should be taken care of in every firm. In context with the power generation plants where heavy elements are used which can be harmful for employees working there in terms of their radiations, the risk management techniques which can be used for mentoring and counseling are mentioned below.

Gaps and deficiencies:

There are several deficiencies in safety and risk management standards which must be avoided like accidents, leakages, technical faults, harmful radiation emissions etc. For safety standards what is imperative to have been done is identifying training needs and giving proper training for the safety features and risk bearing ability of the employees.

Mentoring principles:

The organization must be aware of the mentoring needs of the employee in terms of risk management and safety features. The standards of safety must be properly updated and all equipments must be up to date enough so that any kind of misfortune and accident could be avoided. Apart from this, there is another responsibility of the management i.e. regarding the management of employee awareness on the usage of all such equipments emitting radiations and the machineries. [www.staff.uow.edu.au, 2006]

Principles of adult learning:

Adult learning needs must be analyzed and learning by doing and by training must be given to the employees. Adult learning needs are must to be analyzed and monitored so that risk management could be done and their learning capacity should be increased and enhanced so that learning could fetch good results like lesser technical faults, accidents in the firm. Adult learning can be done through counseling, mentoring, explaining and regular feedbacks from the employees.

On the job and off the job training:

For such learning promotions, on the job trainings are a good option. On the job training like radiation safety training, risk management training, evacuation etc which can be in form of a crash course on everyday basis from their front line mangers to the employees can help them perform with better approach and lesser mistakes. On the job training like technical training, demonstrations on the newly introduced machineries etc. should be given. Off the job training can also be advantageous which can be organized in the training cell of the industry or factory where employees will get trained on the machineries without much issues like work pressure, time management, task completion deadline etc.

Who will participate in the training?

The employees according to their job responsibilities must be divided for the training purposes, their mentors or the front line officers and the HR professional for monitoring all such people can be included for training purposes of all departments separately. Technical training must be given on free time and relaxed atmosphere where employees could understand and concentrate on the machinery and do practical examples on those machineries as well. [Mitchell, 2001]

Mentoring arrangements between two parties:

Mentoring should be accurately done and principles of mentoring like trusting the employees complaint on any technical fault, definite time commitment about the well being of defective machines and technical devices, clear relationship with the employees and easy communication must be followed so that mentoring is not less than parenting or friendship in the eyes of the employees so that they be confident enough to convey their feelings to their front line officers.

OHS identified needs in line with legislative requirements:

One of the most imperative facts is that OHS risk management must always be in accordance with the legislative laws established by the labor laws and the government standards like occupational health and safety act and many other similar acts by labor law and the government, this will help the management of the firm to have smooth functioning and no illegal tasks going on in the factory thereby motivating the labors and the employees to participate with full confidence on the machineries for being genuine. There are some safety standards as per labor laws for all types of machineries like maintenance within every determined period of time, inspector who will be inspecting the machinery and its functioning and other standards on safety and precautions being followed, all these must be looked after by the organization for risk management on high standards.

Consultation arrangement with the employees:

There must be done consultation with the employees by the organization, this with enable the firm to understand the basic and core problems which the employees are suffering from in terms of the factory conditions or the machinery functioning. The consultation with the employees may enable the management to understand their problems from the front and it must be resolved soon so that no issues on management and safety negligence could arise in future.

Risk management principles:

The organization must abide with the risk management principles like

  • Reporting should be made proper so that the risk could be easily conveyed on top level without delays and negligence,
  • Support structure i.e. the risk management team should be competent enough to make all necessary commitments to the management on smooth management of the safety standards.
  • Early warning indicators must be installed as per the demand of the organization and the review cycle should be competent enough to do evaluation and the monitoring on regular intervals.

Organization’s Policies and procedures for OHS needs:

The policies and procedures and the reporting mechanism on occupational health and safety units must be made highly responsive in such a system and in special context with the  OHS system it must be quick and fast so that all policies and procedures on risk management and its negligence are made fast and are seriously held in the organization. The review or the controlling techniques according to the risk management reviewer must be done on priority basis and controlling standards should always be enhanced for betterment of safety standards. [Comcare, 2000]

Organizational Report mechanism and controlling techniques:

Thus it can be said that power generation plants have many harmful radiations coming out of them which may harm the employees working there in many ways but it can be avoided and risk management must be done so that no accidental leakages and other mishappenings could take place in the plant and the safety of all employees and people residing in nearby areas should be preserved. [http://www.nsca.org.au, 2012] Safety standards like OHS training, adult learning, mentoring, off the job counseling, demonstrations, role plays and legislative rules, all such necessary steps as mentioned above should be followed and monitored on regular basis.
