SOLUTION

Carbon footprint responses on Qantas operation

Australia has taken the responsibility of solving the global climate change crisis by devising and introducing emissions trading schemes and aviation industry   plays an important part by reducing the impact of climate change due to huge greenhouse emissions. They have shown an improvement of 70% in carbon emissions by improving the fuel efficiency and Qantas has set a target of improving its fuel efficiency improvements to 25% by the year 2020.

Qantas has been a greenhouse gas producer and it has been the responsibility of the organization to reduce the carbon emissions by improving the carbon efficiency of its operations by taking some vital steps to reduce its environmental impressions. 95% of the carbon emissions are due to aircraft fuels which are used during the normal course of flying operations, so they try and acquire most fuel efficient aircrafts every year which are technologically improved too. Like Airbus A380 was first introduced by Qantas only in 2008 in its fleet and Boeing B787 will be incorporated in the fleet by 2013 to reduce carbon emissions.

Qantas has always been a supporter of approach which should be transitional and lead to achievable and realistic reduction of carbon emissions fixed and lower carbon price and not to phase-out obligatory reduction in all industries till there are mutual agreements across the globe which are highly effective and should not have any cut-off points or tiers. This will not only help Qantas and other industries as they will get time to implement efficiently planned strategies without harming or posing any threat to the organizations in financial terms too. This is applicable on domestic aviation industries and thus the organization would be able to provide funds for the best and effective technology for carbon reduction too.

Qantas can operate in more responsible manner environmentally by overcoming major issues related to carbon emission which is due to daily operations. The major issues which Qantas is facing are:

  • Reduction of fuel brunt everyday in normal flight operations
  • CO2 emissions due to fuel burning which increases its carbon footprints
  • Increasing problems due to noise created during normal everyday flight landings and take-offs.
  • No reliable way to access weather challenged airports by Qantas airlines.

Using the Required Navigation Performance systems of GE Aviations would not only give economic but also environmental leverage to Qantas airlines. As this is a unique technology which allows the aircrafts to fly in very precise manner and does not rely on ground based radio base signals for landing rather takes curved flight pathways. Thus helping in reduction of track miles, and reduces consumption of fuel. This in turn reduces carbon emissions and noise also reducing sound pollution too. This system not only helps in conservation of fuel but also results in increase of airspace capacity. Thus the air traffic congestions and delayed flights will also be reduced and this would directly lead to reduction in carbon emissions. Qantas used this RNP system in 2004 in Queensland flights and was able to handle bad weather and land safely on the airport without any flight delay. It also improved the flight efficiency by reducing the burnt fuel and no flight diversions, thus lesser carbon emissions due to these diversions. The airport can be navigated safely in the mountain terrains or bad weather with the help of this unique RNP system.

Recommendations

Qantas suggests that the government should also play a major role by contributing and supporting this cause of carbon emission of aviation industry for long term sustainability by:

  • Offering incentives –financial or regulatory just to make sure that the best technology is being implemented.
  •  In order to arrange aircrafts with cleanest technology and engines the government should give tax benefits in the form of incentives to the airlines.
  • The government should co-fund the research, development and commercialization of continual choice of jet fuel.

Voluntary carbon offset schemes are also introduced by Qantas and various other airlines to reduce the net carbon footprints of aviation industry in total. In this scheme the individuals can purchase carbon off-sets in exchange for the flights. Many airlines have sold so many carbon offsets to individuals which are way above the international standards.

By making more energy efficient airport buildings and using lower carbon emitting fuels in the airport also carbon emissions can be reduced or controlled. A number of trails have been done in the past and it has been realised that Bio-Fuels are an efficient and safe way to reduce carbon emissions.

Qantas is planning a total revamp of its environment friendly mage by giving special cut-offs to passengers who plan their trips which reduce carbon emissions , thus setting new CO2 reduction standards(Creedy 2007).
