PART II (50 marks)

In well written essay of around 300 words, answer the following question.

  1. Team working is one of the core skills for employability. According to Schein (1980), teams form for both functional and psychological reasons. Write an essay discussing the functional and psychological reasons according to Schein theory. (This question will test your essay writing and paraphrasing skills.)

In his theories related to the formation of teams, Schein has discussed a variety of reasons which result in the formation of a team. These include the functional and psychological reasons. One of the major psychological reasons is that there exists a psychological contract between all the employees of the organisation. This includes a set of unwritten expectations which need to be fulfilled at the time of operation both by the managers and the employees. The theory further states that this psychological reason mostly deals with the belief which individuals have about the promises made between themselves. These contracts have been found to be improving the performance of an organisation in the long run (Rosita 2020). Some of the other important factors which have been discussed by Schein as the reason include Artifacts. These include myths or common ideas among the members of a team about the handling of certain situations and common agreement about heroic acts. These common aspects result in people becoming a team during the course of operation. Technology is an important factor because it results in the shaping of values and assumptions among the people operating in an organisation. Some other psychological reasons which lead to the formation of teams include visible practices and rituals followed by individuals and work traditions which suggest that something should be done in a particular manner. Underlying assumptions also play an important role in the formation of teams in an organisation. Functional assumptions include the manner in which space should be allocated within the entity and the role played by it in shaping the relationships between individuals operating in an entity. The other reasons which determine the formation of a team include the opinions of people about the merits in collaborating with each other and the leadership among individuals (Frady et al. 2019).
