Entrepreneurship : 1522608

Introduction

As per the European commission 2003, entrepreneurship is a synonymous term for running own business, creating employment opportunity in the economy by blending risk, innovation and creativity. Entrepreneurship is basically the capability and preparedness of an individual for initiating, developing, and organising an enterprise considering all uncertainty of making a profit. As mentioned in the diagram, entrepreneurship consists of certain personal, professional and behavioural skills. To be an effective entrepreneur, one has to have enough score on certain skills and carry dynamic personality to compete companies in the industry. It has been observed that one’s own mindset, thoughtfulness, innovation, emotional intelligence, and communication approach defines the quality and success of being an effective entrepreneur.

E= f (e): Entrepreneurship is a function of entrepreneurs.

The research says that one’s own motivation, aptitude, and attitudes shapes the behaviour of an entrepreneur. The test was conducted and these three areas were covered, the test did not cover the skills of problem solving or risk-taking capacity of an individual.

I had appeared for the test which was prepared on the basis of research on Canadian business tycoons, the research was conducted to analyse the characteristics of an entrepreneur operating across the Canadian industry. The test basically evaluates my personality and showcases the capability of being a good or best entrepreneur in near future. Each attribute covered has been given minimum, maximum and average rating, and each score shows the capability of being a good innovator in the industry. As shows in the image, the overall score I received is 161, this is quite good to start with. However, I have to work more towards making this as my career choice but determination and perseverance will make everything possible. The report will analyse each attribute separately. The overall score I carried in motivation is 60 where the average score is 62, aptitude 66 where average score is 67 and attitudes 33 where average score is 37. Considering the average score against mine, the values more or less matches with each other. I will take a help of several theories to relate my results with the ideal entrepreneurship framework, models and theories and critically analyse my assessment results.

Your Motivations

a) Overall score

As shown in the figure, the overall score I received in 60 in motivation them. The average score is 62, this is surprising that I scored below but looking at the individual aspect of motivation I have scored high in control and need for achievements. The factors will be assessed with relating theory of locus of control and need for achievement.

b) Need for achievement and Success

When it comes to aspect of need of achievement, I scored 16 which is one less than average score. However, if I related with my personality, I aim to excel in life whether its professional or personal. I work hard to get whatever I want and most importantly I set high goals to work. Whether its my exam or project submission or career choices, I usually set a high target to achieve and I ensure that my efforts are enough to achieve that.

I am self-motivated and missionary student. I work for my dream and self-satisfaction. No matter what happens, I make sure that I reach the target and dedicatedly work towards achieving my dream.

c) Power and control appeal

The locus of control was defined by Julien rotter in the year of 1950. It reflects and individual perception about underlying main case of happening good or bad event in life. It defines and extent to which one can controls her/his life. High local of controls reflects innovativeness and risk-taking capacity of an individual. Here, I have scores 18 which is above than average, there is no doubt that I have good control over my actions and behavior irrespective of internal or external factors reacts to it. This is my strength (AL-Haddad, 2018).

Figure 1: Locus of control (AL-Haddad, 2018)

The theory discusses two locus of control, internal and external. Internal locus of control defines that success of an individual comes from his/her own internal capabilities and behavior and external locus of control refers to the supportive environment that one gets. Yes, I have a capability to excel in task i take up and I have a good family and fried circle who genuinely support my opinion and guides me in right direction.

d) Need for challenge and ambition

Need for challenge and ambition is closely related with the need for achievements, it is obvious that high need for achievement would lead to have high need for ambition. I am ambitious since my childhood and takes challenging task in college. The score resonates me as I push myself to work hard and one step ahead than decided. I would like to deal with the difficult people and task. I have a very strong, determinant and positive approach to handle such challenging scenario and environment.

Figure2: Achievement Motivation theory By McClelland (Simpeh, 2011)

The theory of need for achievement (given by McClelland’s) also reflects the same that certain individual work towards achieving a new height in life, it is not same with every individual but there are few who sincerely works for achievements and awards rather than only money and I know I am one of those (Simpeh, 2011).

e) Self-sufficiency and freedom

Yes, I scored 10 in the self-sufficiency and freedom because I have been favorite child in the family. Most of my decision are usually taken by parents and I usually have a good faith in them and those proves right also. But yes, I have started taking my own decisions recently since I shifted to hostel. So, the score will improve in this gradually and I will start taking responsibility of my choices made in personal and professional life.

Your Aptitudes

a) Overall score

The aptitudes reflect the competencies and capabilities of being a successful person. Certain combination of aptitudes enables person to be good entrepreneurs in life. The average score is 67 where I have scored 66 which is very near to the ideal values. The scores resonated my personality and competencies. The reflection of aptitude has been discussed in detail with the help of environmental school of thought framework in the later part of the report.

f) Perseverance and determination

I have scored above than average in the perseverance and determination which is 15 above that average score and very near to the maximum score. As mentioned earlier in several placed that I am perseverant and determinant person, I bounce back quickly, I do not give up easily. I thrive for success and keep working hard for the same. Perseverance is one of the important aspects of an entrepreneur, without failure one cannot be an experienced business person. I have strong support of family, belongs to business family. My father always pushes me to work hard and keep learning out of the mistakes. The social cultural environment has a strong influence over my personality. The environmental school of thought explains that the external environmental and social political factors shapes the entrepreneurial behaviour (Cherukara & Manalel, 2011). This can be considered as my strength and would help me to be a successful entrepreneur in the future.

g) Self-confidence and enthusiasm

Considering the self-confidence and enthusiasm, I have scored little bit lower than average score which are 12 and 13 respectively. This is natural that one has lower self confidence at the initial stage. As an when I will grow and gain experience in the industry, I will be able to take decisions confidently. However, I have enough enthusiasm to excel in life but to be an effective entrepreneur, one needs to be more inspired and self-motivated.

h) Tolerance towards ambiguity and resistant to stress

My score reflects that I am low in terms of tolerating uncertainty and stress in life. However, when I appeared for the emotional intelligence test as a part of leadership during my internship, I scored high in that. It shows that I maintain my emotions and my emotions do not affect my professional life. But the score reflects the contrasting results. I have experienced few incidents at the initial stage of graduation which may have influenced my attitude towards stress and ambiguity. The research says that entrepreneurs deal with uncertainty and challenges with their risk-taking capacity, innovative and creative behaviour. I will have to improve in the same. The figure shows the way I can relive my stress by exercising and adopting appropriate communication approach with employees (N.A, https://www.skillsyouneed.com).

Figure 3: Dealing with stress

i) Creativity and imagination

Considering the aspect of creativity and imagination, there is no doubt that I score high in this. I have been following an author of the book “The secret” named Rhonda Byrne, he has strongly recommended readers to visualize things in life. I have been visualizing things since my childhood and coincidently I have got all that in my basket called life. When I was preparing for this particular university exam, I was imagining that I have already enrolled for the course and I am enjoying the subjects and campus activities. And here I am completing my graduation for the university. Similarly, I have imagined that I will be getting best entrepreneurship award of the year 2025 and have posted that on my laptop. This reflects perfect combination of imagination and creativity.

Your Attitudes

a) Overall score

The attitudes of an individual made up of their past experiences and perception. It shows how an individual looks towards the events, scenario and things. I have scored lower than average which is 33 against 37.

j) Perception to act upon once’s destiny

My score in the given aspect is 18 which is low. I have to improve on the same. However, I feel that one cannot change their destiny completely but guide their life to the best by working hard and living for the best. One has to work hard for their dream, there may be uncertain situations comes in between but coming out of trouble id the real test of leaders. Everyone can’t get everything in one go. The intention model has been developed by the Kreuger in the year of 1982 which shows that there us a gap of perceived desirability and perceived feasibility which is known as perception of opportunity. An individual with positive aptitude can take this opportunity and work ahead and can achieve success in life. My personality resonates the similar behaviour.

Intention model (Krueger, 2005)

k) Action oriented

Considering the aspect of action orientation, I have scored lower than average which 15 against 17. This shows that I have to improve myself in areas of exploiting opportunities. Such as there are chances of change in industry trends, introduction of technology or a product. An effective entrepreneur is observed to look for a change and convert a change in to a business idea or an opportunity to innovate the existing processes.

Conclusion

Overall, the score I have got are near to the average scores and reflects that I can be a good entrepreneur in future. Based on the attraction selection-attrition model I would categories myself in the as “persons who find they are suited for the role of entrepreneurs”.  I realized that perseverance and need for an achievement are my strength and I believe that certain aspects can be improved over a period of time.
