Your first step to become a Manager

Questions asked??

Write the important steps for becoming a manager???

Solution the question frames is::

Every year thousands of People have various dreams and aspire to be in their most favourable position which can take them a long way in their lives. It takes a lot to achieve such goals as they need a lot of commitment, determination or strong will power. There are a lot of times when most of the people fail to follow their dreams as they are not concrete enough for them to lay on. However my goals have been consistent right from the start and I always wanted to be in a Managerial position. Most of the people in the world aspire to be promoted as Managers or Supervisors where they are given explicit chances of proving themselves capable of handling their positions (Personal Development 2011).

I have always thought of one significant point where I used to get stuck thinking “Are Managers shaped up all of a sudden or do they originally have that potential in them?” Many people I suppose think and feel in a similar manner. “How do they get on the Management ladder? Am I eligible to be one?” Though I am prepared to shape up my qualities to become an able Manager I still went a long way thinking of how I can gauge myself or my own performance giving it a fact that I have been working for some time now (Personal Development 2011).

I wanted to establish my position which I felt was a great way of reflective thinking which would help me achieve my role as a Manager within a short period of time. Then I learnt about conducting a SWOT analysis about myself. It seemed very interesting in the beginning however I learnt that there are quite a lot of factors which I should learn about.

Here’s the view of how my SWOT analysis looks like:

SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and threats.

I considered my strengths as to how they could be applied to help me achieve my Managerial position. I never thought of weaknesses as something which was draining me of my strengths however thought of them as facts which needed attention to help me progress in life. I have looked at opportunities like they would give me an additional hand holding as if they were there to teach me new ways of life. My threats came across to me as probabilities of risks which might be or could be involved in the process. However all these aspects were great sources of learning for me (Cleveland Clinic 2008).

SWOT

Strengths

Quick learning ability

Positive outlook in life

Good delegation capacity

Ability to multi task

Good follow up skills

Weaknesses

An act of compulsive behaviour to get things done right in the beginning.

Exhibiting impatient behaviour towards my sub ordinates or Colleagues in cases of work not getting done.

Inability to handle emotional stress.

Inability to take an initiative.

Opportunities

To enhance my knowledge in work force management

To up skill myself constantly of various subjects related to my work environment

To attend any trainings or workshops which might be essential to enhance my managerial skills

To observe my Managers at work and learn their tasks

Threats

Ineffective sense of discipline to learn and to look for newer opportunities sometimes because of my laid back attitude

Improper planning and prioritisation which might get me of track in terms of time management

Let me give a detailed view of how I prepared myself for a Senior Role to take up more responsibilities which are more challenging.

Strengths: Having mentioned that I was a quick learner I had the ability to grasp things faster by looking into even the slightest details of the subject. If I have to mention being in the retail industry I looked into the queries and concerns of Customer related issues to get them solved quicker than usual by personally talking to them and getting a fair description of their concern with the goods they have purchased or with the store. This has given an ample opportunity to multi task and to concentrate on a lot more things than usual. This has also given me an opportunity to follow up with the Customers regularly to see if their issue was resolved (Personal Leadership 2011).

Weaknesses: I noticed quite a lot that I had a sense of urgency to get things done before hand and even with a slightest disturbance I noticed that I acted in an unkind manner even with my Colleagues. This ultimately put me into deeper stress levels not being able to cope with the strenuous environment which I failed to realise I was creating for myself. I have recognised and started attending some important workshops which focussed on developing and preparing myself for the next role (Leaders Direct 2011).

Opportunities: Having realised my weaknesses I quickly did a self assessment to improve my behaviour. I looked for opportunities rather than pointing at things not being done. One of the most important aspects I could realise for to become a Manager was to identify roles and look for opportunities to prove myself. I realised I needed to take an initiative and create a real impact for the Business I was working for which would provide much more visibility to achieve my goals. To curb my impatient behaviour I started observing my Superiors at work to see and learn their job roles, their style of working in a calmer way, their way of handling stress, their way of prioritising things to handle and lower my stress levels efficiently. I have recognised and started attending some important workshops which focussed on developing and preparing oneself for the next role (Career Realism 2008).

Threats: I also realised and looked at some of the threats like ineffective time management and lack of discipline. I started to learn prioritising things which are to be completed on priority and then scale up my time doing the other things.

Thus I would like to conclude that by realising, identifying, planning and prioritising various areas or skills to be improved I have gone a long way improvising my communication, responsiveness, appreciating and persistence to become a good and a responsible Manager. With my extensive interest in learning and conducting self performance checks I am sure I would get into my desired role with a lot of options available in the retail industry starting to be a Management Trainee, slowly move up to be a Department Manager and then go on to become a Store Manager with a wide range of exposure to most of the Store Operations like Sales, Cash, Products and Human Resources (Gtcni 2011).
