Introduction

Hydroelectricity is the electricity which we get from rotating turbines lowered in high speed current of a water body. Since it is derived from the currents of water so it is reliable non conventional source of renewable energy which available at low prices.

Analysis of the articles

The objective of the document is to analyze the articles on hydroelectricity from different journals and portals. We would analyze the articles one after another and their references can be found at the end of the document in chronological order.(sciencedaily.com,2011)

The science daily discusses that most of the hydroelectricity comes from the water stored in the dams. These large dams store water from the rivers and the rain waters. This water is then released at controlled speed, which rotates the large turbines which are kept at the bed of the dams. These turbines rotate at a very high speed due to the resistance from the rushing water. The rotating blades of the turbines rotate the shaft attached to its end and which in turn rotates the coil in the magnetic field. The current is produced in the coil as result of magnetic induction.

The American daily discusses the need of returning back to the clean sources of energy. The daily recalls that how the water dams produces almost half of the country’s electricity. It further tells us that using other sources of power supplies have some disadvantages as compared to the hydroelectricity, as this comes at low expenditure, the electricity from power plants running on oil need great deal of costs and even there is volatility in their prices. It also gauges the risks of the nuclear plants which can get out of control and many environmental risks related to them.

The New York Times considers hydroelectricity as derived from all the different and varied sources of water are it the tiding waters of the sea, the melting water from the glaciers and the icecaps, the vapors rising from the geysers and many other innumerable sources. It points out the ways the electricity is produced through the turbines and the rotating blades clung to the flowing water. The details of producing hydroelectricity can be found in a technical book but the important thing is water is renewable source of energy and diverse technologies should be found out to produce electricity .(scientificamerican.com,2011)The small dams doing lesser damage to the environment would be more welcome.

The oil journal talks about the ocean power stored in the strong waving currents, the tides which appear in the fortnights with the loads of water and energy bulked with it. The high tides and the low tides can be used to store water in the dams, slowly letting them run over the turbines. There are counties which are parched with the resources from the underground, but are rich with the water resources, the surrounding oceans. The energy can be also tapped from the hot and the cold currents. The temperature difference between the currents can be tapped as energy. There are other un-tapped resources of the seas and the vast oceans spanning around us. The great countries like Japan has shut down its nuclear plant, In such a situation the seas are the power houses of vast energy, left much of it untapped.( http://topics.nytimes.com/,2012)

The Hydro article by the Reuk portal gives a more technical touch to the topic than the other journals and portals pointed above them do.  It points us at the disadvantages of the big dams made across the rivers. They (dams), help us buying cheap and clean energy from the environment but at the same time their side effects cannot be neglected. Due to the dams there happens massive changes in nature have to be done. The people residing there have to be displaced. The passage to the mountains is cut. The way of the rivers is changed. This brings a sea change in our environment. A lot of instability is caused, which bring earthquakes and volcanoes, tsunamis. The movements of the tectonic plates are altered. So, it’s the need of the time, we do not produce large changes in the natural phenomenon. Building small dams would significantly resolve our problem.

Conclusion

The article we had was an analysis of the articles which were made public by the journals and portals. Thus, far we discussed the ways, resources, pros and cons of hydroelectricity.
