1. The counseling process was indeed lightening in its very spirit. I loved the whole process as that helped me to identify the real potential which I personally possess to help out any other person out of the distress. I feel very happy to have undergone this valuable session of personality development that gave me chance to help the clients to build the helpful habits and retain the activities to make the life cheerful. I was fruitfully trained that hoe a counselor should help and promote the decision making capacity in a human being in crisis. The counseling process gave me countless opportunities to explore my own limits in terms of patience and encouragement that is required for the same job. It was very intriguing in nature as that helped me to grow in the social context. It was a satisfying session throughout as this gave me a chance to gain a utilitarian perspective (Bhatta, P. ( 2009)). The same was interesting at the same time as the concept is beyond any one particular domain of the society. I am happy to have met so many learned guides through these personality development sessions as it was not only a pure training but also a self reflective journey where I explored more of myself.

I acquired a great knowledge about myself while I was undergoing the counselor trained under the guidance of the experienced counselors at NIE. I learnt that I was not a fulfilling candidate myself in terms of being a counselor. As a desired counselor should possess some important character traits like Extraversion, I was actually faring just fine in this aspect and so I was motivated by my trainers to grow more extravert that would further be helpful for the communication, management of the temperament and the opportunities that could be provided to the clients. I learnt that actually I had a good score of the neurotic factor and so I was very finely prepared to cope up with the responsibilities and the stress. I realized that I could be more prepared for the potential risks and held a natural tendency to wash away the obstacles. I was also happy to recognize the fact that I scored more towards being a conscientious counseling trainee. I discovered that I was not impulsive and I could manage according to the regulations of the organisation and I did not require much of the supervision.  It was important to understand this model that contained these important personality traits, the training thus did not aim to diagnose any problem but only to increase the self-awareness of the person.

The counselor who was helping me out was definitely guiding me positively through this personality development session. The counselor helped me to acquire the self-awareness and the empathetic behavior towards the other. The counselor motivated us to become good in all the possible ways like the attainment of the strong psychological health. It was indeed a step by step guidance and helped me to become sensitive towards the condition and the circumstances of the clients and I was also taught to work under the limitations. The significance of the environmental factors was also crucially brought to me and the fellow counselor trainees (Clark, A. (2010)). The process was to arrange the counseling room with proper distance between the chairs. The main idea was to be closer to the client and thus the physical setting of the counseling room should be such that the chair shall be arranged on face-to-face design. It was also helpful to know that basic things, like connecting the pauses and the silences while conversing with the client, greeting the client on arrival and departure and also the maintenance of the eye-contact through the conversation is also essential.

Counseling is a social process and thus the social elements might vary in their range. The clients may belong to any different and unique cultures, they might possess different ideological backgrounds, the myriad expressions and the emotions. In Catherine’s my core professional skills as a counselor could not resolve this matter. My belief as a counselor with respect to life of that delicate child is subjected to mental instability as she is in dilemma about the right and wrong in her life. As a counselor I will not be instructing the child to behave in a way but would be working on her conscience self and would enhance her ways of dealing with the stress to which she is subjected because of the relationship crisis in her life (Burnard, P. (1999)). Counseling in my experience has been such an intimate form which one can learn and that essentially requires the trainee to shed away any stereotypes or rigid opinions which he/she hold  and requires the one to become real in forming the relationship with the client. As a counselor the values that affected my relationship with Catherine as I had to become a part of of the suffering which she alone had been facing. In this work of counseling the keeping up with the basic human values is important as that makes the counseling sessions a success.  Now I would have adapted myself to become liberal and to adjust with the client’s situation as she is resilient and very shy (Carlson, J. (2004)).

In the counseling sessions the experience is diverse and myriad in its own way. The exposure is drawn towards diverse objectives and the motives. The experience taught me so many new techniques they ranged from managerial to the therapeutic skills. In the class role plays I always wished to retain my identity, this would always let me stay composed and always let me stay focused on the long term goal which I have. I have been trained to respect other’s point of view and therefore in Catherine’s case I had to first befriend the child so that she believes I am there to diminish the dilemma which she is facing and also the level of maturity to which she is being exposed unexpectedly.(Ukasoanya, G. (2009)). The options which I have always tried to access for me and for the clients are life-oriented and shall not be seen as the temporary solution to any problematic. As a counselor I always have tried to follow each course through patience and working on the path of righteousness and authenticity. As a part of the profession, as a counselor we have been guided to make the morally upright decisions and to help out the people in distress in such a way which is a acceptable and works as circumscribed by authenticity. So for a child, it would require much of the patience and compassion.

In case I would want to handle the similar cases today, for example the projects like Social Problem-Solving Skills and Gaming for Children, Pathological Internet Use among adolescents in Singapore: Trends and factors etc. I have gained expertise through time and my understanding. Also, my experience of handling Catherine has also helped me a lot in exploring different ways of counseling a child through the tough times in her life because of the clash between her parents. I believe that I will be more patient with the client, I have gained better skills for listening, I have also become a better extravert, and my conscientiousness level has also experienced a hike. Once I start working on these projects, especially in relation with the children I will be more empathetic and I know that I will be empathetic to their needs and requirements better. In the counseling process I would associate with the parents better and would encourage them to better engage in the daily routines of the children and also if there comes a similar case as this one, then I would try and counsel the parents as well that they need not tell such mature or unethical things to the children. I would ask the parents to focus upon their language use in especially in front of children, as I have learnt from Catherine’s case that how she was humiliated psychologically when her father called names to her mum (National Institute of Education. (2012)). So, today my counseling would be more positive, encouraging and would be more explicit in nature than ever before, and this is the corollary of the useful personality development sessions that I have gone through.
