HR Management Assignment Help online writing case study analysis:: Occupational health and hazard At Bolt & Catch Pty Ltd

Analysis of the case

As an occupational health and safety consultant, I found that there were many things at Bolt and Catch Pty Ltd which weren’t matching with the standards set forth by OHS. It can be said that the managers at the plant were too busy to take care of the safety measures in the plant.

Hazards identified at Bolt and Catch Pty Ltd

Few hazards that were noticed at the Bolt and Catch Pty Ltd are as follows: –

  1. The room, in which the safety devices were placed, was just setup newly and hence, the safety measures were ignored. In the room, it was noticed that proper safety devices weren’t set thus, making life difficult for the workers who are working over there. There wasn’t an emergency stop button as well (WorkCover 2003).
  2. Proper training wasn’t provided to the employees who were handling the machineries. This is one of the major problems and hence, it was noticed that workers were ignorant regarding the process that they need to follow while handling the machinery.
  3.  The noise levels in the area were too high (90 dB) and it was noticed that certain employees were not even wearing the safety hearing aids required to protect them. The noise level was too high and the workers were trying to talk to each other at loud voice (RTA 2008).
  4. The employees who were handling the machine weren’t completely ready to handle it. It was noticed that certain employees were wearing the gloves and boots and others were working without it. If this continues for a long time then the organization will face some or other safety issues.

Assessment strategies

Every employer should understand the assessment strategies so that they can be safeguarded from the legal complications that they will have to face for non-compliance. Bolt and Catch Pty Ltd should implement an assessment strategy so that the organization can be free from legal issues.

The organization should, first and foremost, identify the OHS issues that the organization is facing. Once the organization identifies the issues, that need to be addressed. The organization should set up a plan that will allow the organization to improve on the identified issues. The organization should also take suggestions from workers who are working in that particular area.

Once the problem is identified, a solution needs to be identified and all the workers should be trained accordingly. Risk control strategy needs to be implemented and a supervisor needs to be appointed who can keep a track of things if they are being followed properly. This will allow the organization to be safe from the legal issues that they will have to face and at the same time, the workers will also be safe (SixStepstoOccupationalHealthandSafety 1996).

Control strategies

The problems that have been noticed at Bolt and Catch Pty Ltd can be controlled. Control strategies need to be implemented at the earliest so that the workers can be safe.

Bolt and Catch Pty Ltd should set up  a proper training for all the workers who are handling the metal stamping press. The employees aren’t aware about the safety measures that they need to take. Metal pressing stamp is a huge machine and hence, if any safety measures are ignored then it may even lead to the death of the worker over there. The company should set up a safety button so that if there is any issue then the other workers over there can switch off the immediate supply of electricity. All the employees must be given clear instructions regarding its usage, once it is installed (NationalVolunteerSkillsCentre 2004).

The workers should be given a classroom training regarding the safety measures that they need to follow while they are in the organization. Providing classroom training will allow the employees to know the seriousness of the issue. After that, a supervisor should give them a live demo regarding the usage of safety equipments and machines so that the workers will know exactly regarding the usage.

Noise measuring equipment should be purchased so that the noise level in the working area can be measured.  OHS clearly states that the noise level in the working area shouldn’t be more than that of 85 dB. If the noise levels increases then the workers should be given a hearing protection device so that their hearing can be protected. Regular tests should be conducted to check if the hearing levels of the worker aren’t disturbed due to the heavy noise in the working environment. The workers should be educated regarding the hazards of noise pollution so that they don’t ignore the safety measures that are introduced in the organization (WorkSafeAlberta 2009).

Legal complications if OHS is avoided

The penalty for not following OHS guidelines have been increased since 2002 so it is the responsibility of employer to be careful. The maximum fine that the employer will have to pay for not following occupational and safety guidelines can be $ 500,000 so it’s always better to follow the safety guidelines. Apart from the fines that the employer will have to pay, they can also be given jail sentences. From 2002, the judge has been given authority to give punishments like that of conducting safety programs or educational programs. In the past, people weren’t taking it seriously but now with the increase in the punishment, the employers and workers are forced to follow OHS guidelines. At workplace, if any employee isn’t following safety measures then the human resource manager can charge him a fine and this is considered to be completely legal. This can be done only when the organization has given him all the safety measures but he isn’t using it (WorkSafeAlberta 2009)

A worker is also forced to follow all the rules and regulations that have been set forth by OHS. Initially, the human resource manager will be charging them a fine but later, the government may take action and the government can charge a fine up to $10,000 (FlexibleLearning).

Occupational and safety guidelines have been in existence since long and it is changing with time so that the employers as well as the workers can be safe.
