Introduction

Counseling is a service of helping people to deal with their personal problems. It helps people find a solution for their problems and also discover themselves.Counseling is a procedure with a beginning, a middle and an end. The counseling procedure comprises of a few sessions but has a definite time period. The counseler offers support to the client. During all the phases, the counselor urges the client to consider all aspects of their life that they wish to change. There are a number of counseling models, tools and techniques to help a client to change. The basic steps involved in counseling involve people in gaining recognition for their skills, being confronted by a caring person and re- experiencing any past events which are relevant to the study.  The main emphasis is on the feelings and thoughts of the client.

Problems

The career related problem can be of mainly three types. These are Job Performance Problems, On The Job – Interpersonal Problems and Dysfunctional Behavior Problems. The causes for the problems can be internal or external. Some of the internal problems are lack of self confidence, insufficient practice, fear of failure, etc. the external problems include lack of oppurtunity, unclear work unit goals, personality clash, work overload, lack of recognition, etc.

Counseling Approach

According to Preston (1998), no one theoretical model can adequately address the wide range of problems the clients present. The best approach to counseling is the integrative approach, which integrates concepts and techniques from various approaches (Corey, G., 2001). The integrative approach to counseling looks beyond the confines of single- school approaches to give the maximum benefit to the clients (Arkowitz, 1997). In the process of integrative counseling, methods and concepts are selected from a variety of models. Because no one theory has a patent on the truth, and because no single set of counseling techniques is always effective in working with diverse client populations, some writers think that it is sensible to cross boundaries by developing integrative approaches as the basis for future counseling practice (Lazarus, 1996). However, there are some limitations with the integrative approach.

Counseling Process

To begin with, a plan would be made about the counseling process. This includes the following steps:

ñ The client would be told about the time, venue, method and limitations of the counseling process.

ñ The problem and its impact would be asked in detail.

ñ The client would be asked how he/ she feels about the problem and intends to solve it.

ñ A definite goal will be set.

ñ A final solution and action plan for it would be determined.

ñ Monitoring of the correct actions would be done.

For the counseling process to be effective, the counselor has to make sure that he/ she knows the problem correctly. The forces influencing the behavior should be analysed. Proper planning, organisation and coordination of the sessions is very important. A best time for the sessions should be determined. All the sessions should be conducted with sincerity, compassion and kindness. An important aspect of counseling is that the sessions hould end in time and the timing and venue for the next session determined according to the clients’ convenience.

Set of questions:

Although the client has already presented the counselor with the problems faced in writing, for an effective session and a solution, the process of counseling begins with the actual face to face talk which would include the following questions:

l  The first set of questions would include questions regarding personal interests, skills and values.

ñ Do you like your current career choice?

ñ Does working with your career bring out something special in you?

ñ What are your special interests in your career choice?

ñ Would you want to change yor career for one which satisfies your personal values and goals?

l  The next set of questions would include questions regarding the career choice.

ñ What is your current career?

ñ What is that you don’t like about your career?

ñ What carrer option do you have in mind, if given an option to change?

ñ In your new career, what are your choices?

l  The next set of questions would be regarding the career action.

ñ What steps are you willing to take in your career? What do you think is the best career choice after this one?

ñ Are there any issues which you feel may be transferred to your next career change?

ñ What actions will you take to ensure that the above mentioned issue is resolved and does not happen again?

l  The last set of questions would be regarding the workplace.

ñ Do you like the place where you work?

ñ Is it far from your place?

ñ Do you like talking to your colleagues about issues other than work?

ñ Are your colleagues helpful?

ñ Do you feel respected at your workplace?
