Education assignment essay on: “Pre-schooling in Singapore“
“Education is not filling a pail, but the lighting of a fire”. These are the words spoken by William Butler Yeats who wanted to highlight the fact that, we need to lighten up the young as they will be the one who would create fire in years to come. According to the poet, fire here means to shine & spread it all across so as to have a better future. Many initiatives have been taken up by the government of each & every country to take up various steps which would help to groom the child from day one.Today I would like to talk about one of the most interesting topics i.e. “Pre-schooling in Singapore”. The initiatives which have been taken up by the government of Singapore country has led to the holistic developments of the child once he/she is allocated with a pre-school. Pre-schooling helps the chils to nouish its talent, abilities, gain confidence & get prepared for the realities of the real world. Singapore takes into consideration IT as one of the major aspects in terms of education, infusion of education as well as grooming the child on all the grounds (Mooney & Garhart, 2000). The concept of pre-school in Singapore has led to a mile stone in the overall development of a child. This has led a base or a foundation which would help to impart quality education in the futire years to come. Therefore, Pre-schools in Singapore could be defined as child care or a kindergarten which provides the child education at a very young age. The age group covered in such type of schools varies from 0-6 years of age. Preschool education refers to a specific type of an education which would help the children to be train before they join the statutory or obligatory education. This educational framework majorly takes into consideration structural, alignment, process as well as the various components which would help to groom the child from day one. This would help to groom the child socially & academically (Harper, 1993).According to Helen Keller, “the best educated human being on this planet is the one who understands all about life style, well being in which he/she is placed”. This quote emphasizes upon the fact that, people around thechild are solely responsible for the development as well as overall grooming of the child. This quote also explains the major principles along with the outcomes attachyed with the education imparted at the kindergarten or the child care. Pre schooling plays one of the most crucial roles in imparting good education for the child. It provides a base for the child to enter the main school.According to the Ministry of Education, Singapore it has been termed that since Singapore does not has any natural resources the treat the people of the country as one of the main natural resource. This is the main reason as to why the Singapore governments majorly focus upon the overall development of the child. The main aim of the Singapore government is to nurture each & every child holistically & develop to act as clear thinkers. Based upon one of the reports presented by the Ministry of Education, Singapore it was mentioned that – “We want to look after all the Singaporaen children with best of the health, education & a strong bond which would last forever. The main aim for a kindergatren at Singapore is to provide key steps or qualitites which would be adopted at the main school level. The pre-chool would help to develop a child in such a manner which would lead to fulfill the needs of the community in the years to come”.The Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education, Mr Shanmugaratnam stats that – “ A child who portrays high levels of curiosity in him in the initial years of life would help to ignite as well as develop such an excitement within each other. When two or more people would combine together, this would lead to a headstart. Therefore, every child shall be given a chance for a headstart”.
The pre-school education in Singapore would help to groom the children in four diverse areas such as cognitive, emotional, social & physical development. These four diverse areas would help to expand the overall learning experiences of the child (Emotional Development, 2012). These four diverse areas when combined together would lead to holistic development of the child. Apart from the four diverse araes, some of the other aspects which shaould be kept in mind are creative expression, environmental status, language & literacy, awareness of one’s own sense, numeracy, etc (Walkerdine, 1990).Cognitive development refers to a stream of study which would take into consideration the psychology as well as the neuroscience for the development in the child’s processing, skill, knowledge, ability to learn, language, development of the brain, etc (Giddens, 2006). Development of the child in social front also posses one of the crucial elements for the child. This would help the child to alter his/her body language, style so as to perform in front of the society. Emotional development also refers to a type of development which would take into consideration from the starting i.e. kindergarten & preschool. This would help to provide better relations between children & teachers within the preschool. This would also help to provide development in both social & intellectual means. Physical development in case of child would help the child to develop biologically & psychologically (Reeves, 2000).
In the intial stages of life, children should be kept free & express their ideas in the best of the manner. Children should be provided by different ways with which they could exprerss their ideas or feelings. At this stage, the parents would easily be able too judge the interset of their child. At pre-school various activities would be undertaken which would help to enhance the overall knowledge of the child in terms of envirnmental awareness (Berk, 1993). The main aim of this type of education would be that, the children would be able to recoganize as well as express their views regarding the surroundings. Language & litearcy would play a crucial role in the overall developments of the child. This would enhance the ability to learn & possess a capbility to think in a wider manner. This would be practiced by using role plays, reading, rhyming, etc (Buysee & Wesley, 2005).Some of the examples which would state why holistic development is important for children have been summarized as under. The following list comprises of three examples of children learning in an early childhood centre.
The first example states – A child is sitting in the sandpit using a spade to dig the sand and then tipping it off the spade into the bucket. The bucket is filled to the top with sand but the child continues to put the sand on top of what is there already. The sand is beginning pile up to look like a pointed mountain with the newly placed sand beginning to fall off into the sand pit. This indicates that, the child is able to learn with the help of sand the different shapes such as Ponited Mountain, etc. This activity would help to learn & keep in mind the various shapes.
The second example states – A child is running around with 2 other children kicking a ball. The child is shouting “my turn to kick the ball” but one of the other children gets the ball and kicks it away from the first child. The first child shouts “my turn now” but another child gets the ball and throws it to the first child who manages to catch the ball. The child smiles and shouts to the other 2 children “see if we can kick it over the gate”. These examples clearly indicate that, children learn to count while they play. The concept of numeracy could be seen with the help of this example.
The last example states that – A child is standing looking at a pile of different shaped and coloured leaves on the table in front of her. The child tells the friend standing nearby “I picked these off the ground on my way to Kindergarten”. The friend said “Let’s throw them into the air and see which colour lands on our heads”.
“Okay” said the first child “and if it lands on mine first I get another turn”. The friend said “That’s okay but the next time; we have to throw leaves that are the same shape”.
“Look” said the first child”that leaf floated down and landed on the floor”.“Oh well my head cannot be big enough for the leaf to see where it has to land so why don’t we throw them in the water bucket and make some soup”. This example states that, the children are trying to learn as well as recall the different shapes along with the colors attached to them. Such type of activities would be quite helpful to provide education to the young children.
Hence, it could be summarized as well as concluded by saying that “Education is not a preparation for life. Education is termed to be life itself” & kindergarten education provides a holistic framework to impart eductaion as well as promote heart for learning.
