1. State the youth subculture that you have researched.The youth sub-culture that has been researched in this report refers to “Emo Sub-Culture”. Emo has been referred to as a sub-culture which is characterized with dark way of dressing as well as portrays the most cynical view within this world. People belonging to this sub culture do not take much time to view the situation as hopeless. People within this sub-culture sometimes portray an objectivist attitude. It has been noticed that the youth belonging to this sub-culture are quiet as well as are amongst those who are being bullied by the society (in real or reel life).

From your research, discuss the shared styles, behaviors, interests, and/or issues etc a youth worker would need to be aware of when working with young people from this group.Based upon the research on Emo subculture it can be seen that, an Emo kid would be derived as an individual who is emotionally deprived. This type of sub-culture came into existence in the mid 1980’s which take into consideration girls & boys similar to Goth & Hippies. The girls & boys belonging to this group are dressed up in much a wild manner. Youth belonging to this sub-culture, like to dress in a standard dress & the males as well as the females look alike in terms of their dressing and clothing styles.

Apart from the physical description of the kids belonging to the Emo sub-culture, consists of heterosexual female possessing dyed hair (prominently red), practice lips piercing, large tattoos all over their body (specifically arms, chest). But, after the rigorous search on the same it was seen that Emo’s are likely to get involved into male v/s male, male v/s female & female v/s female physical intimacy at the public spaces.People from the Emo’s sub-culture have been noticed to be mentally ill. This means that, high levels of pressure on them can lead to various types of problems. There is a stereotype [e thinking which is noticed amongst Emo’s is in regards to the fact that they cut as well as abuse themselves due to lack of confidence within oneself. The Emo kids are believed to be quite aggressive & ill treated at the school level. They are highly bullied on the basis of their dressing style, behavior, how they are different from others & taking into consideration other factors as well. The degree to which elements in society have been a threat to Emos was reported online in a Time article on Emo-bashing in Mexico in 2008.

As well as running riot in Queretaro, a mob also attacked emos in the heart of Mexico City this month. Furthermore, emos complain they are being increasingly threatened and assaulted by smaller groups on the streets on a daily basis. ‘It’s getting dangerous for us to go out now. We get shouted at and spat on. We get things thing thrown at us. There is so much hate out there,’ said Santino Bautista, a 16-year-old emo high school student sitting in a Mexico City plaza alongside other teenagers in tight black jeans and dark makeup. Most of all the assailants target the emos for dressing effeminately, still a provocative act for many in a macho Mexico. ‘At the core of this is the homophobic issue. It is the conservative side of Mexican society fighting against something different.’Society also has been concerned that members of the subgroup might be a suicide threat (DefinisGojanovic, 2009; Martin, 2006). For example, because of their connection with  the Emo subculture and Emo social networking on the internet, the deaths of two teenagers in two separate incidents in 2007 have been widely cited to support this concern. And, another teenager’s murder was also discussed as related to Emo subculture. However, Phillipov (2009) has stressed that this link was only tenuously established and that “moral panic” in relation to youth music and subculture is a rather common feature of discussions in the media (e.g., media is seen as building-up concern to a degree that is disproportionate to what are likely to be actual risks).

Emo has been criticized for its androcentrism. Andy Greenwald notes that there are very few women in emo bands, and that even those few do not typically have an active voice in the songs’ subject matter: “Though emo—and to a certain degree, punk—has always been a typically male province, the monotony of the labels’ gender perspective can be overwhelming.” The triumph of the “lonely boy’s aesthetic” in emo, coupled with the style’s popularity, has led to a litany of one-sided songs in which males vent their fury at the women who have wronged them: Some emo bands’ lyrics disguise violent anti-women sentiments in a veneer of pop music. However, despite emo’s frequent portrayal of women as powerless victims, fans of the style are from both genders, and some acts have even greater popularity with women than with men. One explanation for this is that the unifying appeal of emo, its expression of emotional devastation, can be appreciated equally by both sexes regardless of the songs’ specific subjects.

Backlash

Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman stated that there was a “real backlash” among bands on the tour towards emo groups, but he dismissed the hostility as “juvenile” in nature. The movement grew with intensity over time. Time reported in 2008 that “anti-emo” groups attacked teenagers in Mexico City, Querétaro, and Tijuana.

In Russia, a law was presented at the Duma to regulate emo websites and forbid emo style at schools and government buildings, for fears of emo being a “dangerous teen trend” promoting anti-social behaviour, depression, social withdrawal and even suicide.

In May 2010 in Saudi Arabia, the religious police in the city of Dammam arrested 10 emo girls for allegedly offensive un-Islamic behaviour and dress. In March 2012 reports by human rights activists suggested that, in a single month, Shia militias in Iraq had shot or beaten to death up to 58 young Iraqi emos.

Suicide

Emo music has been blamed for the suicide by hanging of teenager Hannah Bond by both the coroner at the inquest into her death and her mother, Heather Bond, after it was claimed that emo music glamorized suicide and her apparent obsession with My Chemical Romance was said to be linked to her suicide. The inquest heard that she was part of an Internet “emo cult” [148] and her Bebo page contained an image of an “emo girl” with bloody wrists.[149] It also heard that she had discussed the “glamour” of hanging online[148] and had explained to her parents that her self harming was an “emo initiation ceremony”.[149] Heather Bond criticised emo fashion, saying: “There are ’emo’ websites that show pink teddies hanging themselves.” After the verdict was reported in NME, fans of emo music contacted the magazine to defend against accusations that it promotes self harm and suicide.
