Executive Summary
The report contains the discussion on emerging technologies that will streamline the future of education, training and workplace environment within the government and non government organizations.
It also contains the discussion on basic tenets in achieving the overall employee satisfaction which helps in maximizing the potential of manpower. The study is based upon a hypothetical situation where a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and/or a Chief information officer (CIO) of the department Education, Employment and Workplace have asked a consultant to advice upon the usage of emerging technologies in the department.
The report studies the usage of such emerging technologies and its ramifications to a certain extent.
Introduction and Background
The study had to be prepared in the backdrop of revival or reforms that took place in the education system, recruitment strategies, employment opportunities and a striking improvement in the workplace environment globally. Australia was not left behind in the reformation that was taking place that had started in the early decade if 2000 (Sahlberg 2010).
The Lisbon Strategy as discussed by Sahlberg (Sahlberg 2010) states about a striking reformation that took place in Europe in late 90’s. ‘Education and Training 2010’ has been the adoption of a single comprehensive strategy for education and training in Europe. The Lisbon Strategy has been implemented through a common Work program and its 3 generic goals and 13 specific objectives of education and training systems.
An efficient education system of imparting quality education both at secondary and higher education level will ensure that a deserving pool of skilled manpower gets into the competitive world thus throwing stiff opposition to the competition globally.
Emerging Technologies and their Application
The use of technology is embraced as a blessing in disguise, especially by the government departments globally which are actually responsible for the growth index of human capital. There are various technologies that have seen the light of the day in the modern world and are effectively working as tool to improve the conventional processes that have been followed over a period of time.
Before discussing these technologies it is important to understand the current issues which are being faced by the industry.
1. Education
Education is the most elementary part in the growth process of an individual; this has been marred by the usage of conventional techniques in imparting the education (Michael 2009)
ü The prominent demerit of a traditional classroom teaching method is that the instructor is not able to give one-on-one attention to all the students present and listening.
ü Another drawback is the single instructor’s inability to have command on all the leaning styles which is unique to every student; this would hamper the overall learning curve of an individual.
ü Administrative woes serve as an impediment in conducting the affairs of lecture hall or a classroom
ü Some students do not adjust to the classroom environment and thus special attention is needed to address the issue, this cannot be addressed with huge student population in the class
1.1 Relevant Technologies (Six Emerging Technologies in Education n.d.)
An internet based tool which helps the students and the educators who can interact over an interface specifically designed for this purpose. This is widely used by companies which work as an education portal and helps students with the content prepared by a panel of experts.
ü Mobile Technology:
GPS (Global Positioning System) is a relevant technology used as tracking and monitoring system generally embedded in mobile phone enabling to interactive studies.
ü Gaming
The interactive gaming and animated presentations make it more attractive for the learners to understand and interact.
ü Open Content
One of the most innovative ways ever developed is of content sharing over a web based interface or a social networking website widening the horizons of learning.
ü Learning Analytics
This will ensure consistent mining of relevant data, its accessibility and effective interaction.
ü Personal Learning Environment
This is not merely a technology but a process making it more customized for the people who access the information specific way.
2. Employment
The next step is towards the providing ample of opportunities for employment and sophisticated recruitment techniques so as to ensure the matching concept in terms of the talent meeting the required needs to fill up vacancies.
The latest technologies used in the field of the employment and recruitment are:
ü Web 2.0 Technology
The idea of co-operative recruitment is the need of the hour, this means all the employers can use their unutilized resumes by sharing them the prospective employers through a web based technology popularly called as ‘cooperative recruitment (Hale 2008). This is a tool this can be extensively used by the outsourcing industry since it experiences a lot manpower turnover in the form of high attrition.
ü E-Recruitment
The emergence of internet as a potential tool to dig information and find multiple
- options for a single problem has made it the most sought after tool. If the recruitment becomes more organized and through proper channels, through people who are known as ‘job consultants’, it becomes all the more specific and purposeful to do it amass. This is an effective tool used by almost all the industry verticals nowadays.
3. Workplace Environment
There are lot implications of an individual’s outlook to work life balance on the basis of workplace environment provided by the employer (Manage Employee Problems at Work 2007). The most important thing is to maintain the safety and security standards intact and by doing so the organizations can improve conditions of working and productivity (Emerging Technologies for Workplace Safety 2012). They can be discussed as:
3.1 Job Design Technology
This essentially means the most specific suited needs of the a particular industry for e.g. a bank needs specific training modules and customized software to meet the intricate requirements of the banking industry hence do not use general database ware.
3.2 Computerized Controls
This area is specifically targeted towards reducing the manual labor and making the flow of information more centralized and controlled through limited channels. Time sheet entries, attendance marking interface and work performance tracking sheets are a few examples of this.
3.3 Training and Educational Programs
A comprehensive work centric and technology oriented approach will build up the employee psychology to adhere to the stringent requirements of compliance without compromising on the qualitative aspect of the outcome.
Almost all the private sector companies like Google, Accenture, IBM have designed and applied these approaches in maximizing the employee performance and productivity.
Barriers and Drivers
The usage of advanced technologies discussed above received lot of criticism from the believers of conventional approach of
ü Education
- The education portals did not receive much response when it came to adoption of the concept of online teaching through virtual classrooms. The objective was to achieve mass reach and impart quality education to the most needy at times.
- More disclosure of information through portals and advent of cyber frauds were considered to be one of the impediments in the growth of online transactions, the convenient to use it from home i.e. without the burden of physical presence is what made it work eventually.
ü Employment
- With more and more companies posting the opportunities online and the access to of internet to remotest of areas has made it the online job portals a hit among the contemporaries, however, the veracity of such postings is always questionable
ü Workplace
- The workplace environment has improved over the last decade with lot of private players sneaking in with innovative ideas of employee recognition and retention though at times ‘on solution fit to all approach’ works as a deterrent to the retention approach.
Areas of Application
As discussed earlier the areas of application of such technologies is limited to the field in they are used i.e.
ü Technologies like cloud computing, gaming, open content etc. are an effective tool used by the online education portal, freelance writers and scholars to achieve an objective of access to qualitative education
ü Technologies like web 2.0 and e-recruitment portals have been boon for the jobseekers for sometime now.
ü The effective tool usage mechanism with coupled with few employee centric policies has made some companies gain a pool of human capital thus giving that extra edge over its competitors.
Checklist: Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
ü The usage of high end technologies as a solution to the most conventional approaches followed over the years provides definitive success in the future run.
ü It helps the organizations grow faster, produce better products and services and satisfy its customers (MacKechnie n.d.), however, such an adaptation by the companies also calls for regular updating of these technologies for better results.
ü It makes the communication a far easier process, saves lot of money and the effort which an individual puts in (Fuller n.d.).
Weaknesses
ü The newness in any technology would require the users to train and equip themselves before using it thus requiring a lot of time and effort on their part.
ü The frequency of committing errors is quite high as the novelty would not be clear in its application at the initial stage.
ü The biggest drawback with the usage of technology in the application of industrial purposes is that the industries start relying too much on it and the technology gets outdated in a shorter period of time thus involving additional expenditure for necessary upgrades (Little n.d.)
Recommendations and Conclusion
Technology is something which lures for its usage all by itself because of the benefits it carries. The idea of its mass application is substantiated only when the need for it is required and the company applying it justifies its benefits more than the losers which it might incur.
It certainly works for the benefits of common man which cheers the usage the day when its significance is unearthed by it.
