Introduction

Whole of Europe was under the influence of the communist advocacies of the victorious Bolshevik Party that emerged victorious after communist revolution of 1917 and the communists advocated the destruction of the capitalist governments. Leaders of Europe were under the fear of termination of governments due to the influence of communist policies (Kissinger1994, Little 1988). In this situation, Nazi party under the leadership of Hitler came to power in Germany and Nazis won confidence of Europeans by depicting themselves as anti-Bolshevik. (Waddington 2007). The ideology of Nazi was anti-Bolshevik, and the aim of Hitler was to thwart bolshevism. In Hitler’s view bolshevism is the representation of a revolutionary concept of politics and philosophy that emerged as a state and he jeered at the international bolshevism as the concept of Asia that is threatening to the nature and way of life of people of Germany. However, an agreement between Germany and Soviet Union in August 1939 has enabled the division of Eastern Europe among Germany and Soviet Union.

Anti-Bolshevism of Nazi leaders

Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was revolutionary in the sense that the political power was in favor of Germany and it also exposed the very nature of political ideology of Nazi as well as the role of the ideology in the minds of Nazi leaders. The public opinion was shifted from distrust to acceptance but internationally it was different. Even though some of reactions to the pact were different with the three key Nazi leaders, there were significant similarities in reactions of these leaders. Hitler became frustrated with the failure of discussions between Soviet Union and Germany and he was impatient as Soviets continued negotiations with Britain and France. A non-aggression pact between Soviet Union and Germany accompanied by a secret protocol has enabled them to divide Eastern Europe between themselves which allowed Hitler to invade Poland. This was an ideological coup that was a shock to the world; Bolsheviks who were enemies to the Nazis earlier are now partners to them. Prudence has dominated morality that resulted in a war in Europe (Waddington 2007).

Aims change in the course of war

The attitude of Hitler towards Bolshevism was soft in public but in private there was ambivalence in his views on Bolshevism. The destruction of Bolshevism and the invasion of Germany was his ultimate goal. During the course of war his views shifted and he believed that Bolshevism under Stalin has changed cooperation to tolerable limits (Kissinger 1994). Hitler had more favorable views on Bolshevism and he hoped that staling would shed nebulous Marxist ideology in a similar way of decapitation of Jewish intelligentsia by Stalin. This indicates the flexible and accommodating nature of Nazi’s ideology. Hitler temporarily tolerated Bolshevism as Stalin’s emphasis was less on international revolution. Nazis were anti-Bolshevik and Hitler has temporarily reconciled with Soviets to avoid a two front war. However, the decision of Nazis to break the pact and invade Soviet Union was due to the complications which were unforeseen in the war effort. Calculations of power politics influenced the policies of Nazis towards Soviets to include and break the pact. The pact was a side show to Hitler, prominently for his efforts to destroy Bolshevism and the friendship between Soviet Union and Germany was key to the international position of Germany (Little 1988).

Conclusion

Nazi leaders developed pacts with Soviet Union for their convenience, their attitudes are against bolshevism and their attitudes did undergo a shift that corresponded with the relations between them and the Soviet Union. The ultimate goal of Hitler was to destroy Bolshevism but that never happened and the two elements of his thinking enabled him to accept a temporary cooperation as he considered international power politics. Nazi’s perception towards bolshevism is that it has changed the form and degree of international politics rather than substance. Even though Nazis are strong opponents of Bolshevism, they justified that the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was an unfortunate necessity. The personal sentiments of Nazis has changed to accommodate the pact and their uncomforting attitude towards Bolshevism and declining it in private and accepting in the public is an indication of diversity that existed with the ideology of Nazis. The policies of Nazis are fanatic and racist based on cold pragmatism. Nazi leadership has personal anti-Bolshevik views but the interests of Germany demanded a continued German-Soviet friendship. Hitler felt that the primary source of conflict between Germany and Soviet Union is the attitude of Bolsheviks to its internationalism. Nazi leadership felt that England must be chased out and France should be destroyed as a great power, which would result in peace in Europe.
