The three video clips, ‘Student Involved Assessment’, ‘Rethinking Assessment’ and ‘Assessment for Learning: Innovative ways to check for understanding’, talk about newer approaches to the process of assessment by more involvement of students. The three video clips reinforce my belief that assessment should be for learning and not of learning. I completely agree with the teachers of Moose Law School Division who believe that students are the true owners of learning, and hence should be given a greater role in assessing their own performance rather than handing them report cards. Assessment for learning helps students understand their strengths and weaknesses and enables them to learn more. It is showed in one of the videos how the students set up their future targets, and plan how to achieve them; this is what is finally required in the workplace. Enabling students to be self-reliant for assessing their performance will give confidence to them in their future work lives as well. Memorizing stuff is not going to hone their analytical skills.
Some interesting methods of involving students in the assessment process is through one-on-one discussions about their strengths and weaknesses and targets; writing feedbacks on other students’ work, and giving presentations about their work or progress. The students should be encouraged to participate in the process by motivating them, giving them examples and communicating them about the evaluation methods. The video clips clearly demonstrate how beneficial involvement of students in assessment process is and thus, reinforce my belief in the assessment for learning process.
