Preparing For Survey : 1403740

The Joint Commission (TJC) has an important mission of improving the health care sector continuously (Jointcommission.org). TJC have enhanced their evolution of the 4 high risk areas during their survey that include suicide prevention, sterile medication compounding, haemodialysis and high level disinfection and sterilization (Jointcommission.org.).

TJC conducts the evaluation of suicide prevention in the psychiatric hospitals, psychiatric units in the general hospitals, emergency departments and in general medical or surgical wards (TJC 4-1-1 on Survey Enhancements).

It is usually not possible to now about the survey before-hand and prepare for it. Therefore, one must be prepared for it throughout the year. However, chances are there that it may occur the next day. The staffs of the organization needs to be trained for emergency preparedness, security of data and HIPAA compliance.

Nothing extra can be achieved within a day if the TJC survey is scheduled the next day. Only thing that can be done at that stage is to check for the safety measures taken by the staffs while dealing with the patients having suicidal tendencies, and make them aware with the vital points that can be assessed during the survey. Furthermore, the skills used by the staffs while communicating should also be rechecked in order to ensure the standards. In addition, checking whether all the staffs are practicing the desirable standards that are required while working in a suicide prevention ward of a psychiatric ward is required. Finally, testing the competencies of the staffs how they address a particular patient situation who is having a serious suicidal ideation.
