Nursing Goals: 1216517

Individual Learning Goal 1

The first goal is to gain experience in establishing helping and professional relationships. The WPE placement program will give me a perfect chance to achieve this this goal.

NMBA Standards for Practise that the Goal 1 Relate to

The first goal, that is to gain more experience in establishing helping relationships is related to standard 2. Standard 2 states that a registered nurse should engage in relationships that are both therapeutic and professional (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016).

Rationale

Nursing is a profession that I have always been passionate about. One of the aspects that I like about nursing is that one can build a good relationship with a patient or client and help them to recover or recuperate from their ailments/ conditions. Since both the nurse and the patient have a human nature, it is very important for them to build a therapeutic relationship to increase positive health outcomes. It is due to these observations that I decided that establishing helping relationships should be at the top of my goals list. There exists extensive evidence to show that establishing therapeutic relationships is core to nursing care and helps improve the quality of care (Wiseman and Tishby, 2017).

I appreciate that taking care of a client is not a one-person endeavour. Rather, it should involve well cooperated teamwork from different members of the healthcare team. To ensure that positive outcomes are met, it is important for me as a nurse to ensure that I establish professional relationships with other members of the health care team. Doing so would not only play a great role in helping create a therapeutic relationship with the client but also increase the chances for positive health outcomes. Extensive research has shown that it is important for healthcare workers to maintain professional relationships at work. Such research combined with my passion for caring for patient motivated me to come up with this goal.

Strategies to Achieve this Goal

One strategy to achieve this goal is to work on my communication skills. Communication skills are important for they equip an individual with the ability to pass messages and listen effectively. The second way is to respect a client unconditionally. For an effective therapeutic relationship to occur, it is important for a registered nurse to be objective and not judge the client on any basis (Flaskas, 2018). While caring for a patient such characteristics such as culture or religion should not influence the nurse to any kind of bias (Doenges, Moorhouse & Murr, 2019).

Individual Learning Goal 2

The second goal is to always have a proper nursing care plan to aid in offering professional help. These are some of the main goals that I aim to achieve by the time I complete the placement program. I will be monitoring my progress every day to measure my level of success as far as attainment of the goals is concerned.

NMBA Standards for Practise that the Goal 2 Relate to

The second goal, that is to always have a proper nursing care plan relates to standard 5 which states that a registered nurse should develop a plan for nursing care.

Rationale

This goal related to always having a nursing plan to increase positive outcomes. There are two main motivations behind this goal. First, I believe that chances of succeeding at any endeavour are higher if there is appropriate planning. In addition, there exists extensive evidence to show that appropriate planning is related to greater positive outcomes. When it comes to nursing care, the life of a patient or client is involved (Doenges, Moorhouse & Murr, 2019). Life is precious and as a nurse I cannot afford any kind of laxity that may put the life of a patient in danger. It is for this reason that I intend to cultivate the culture of making appropriate nursing plans for action. A nursing action plan should always be guided by the latest scientific evidence, standards for practice and code of ethics (Huber, 2017). Due to the above reasons, I found it very important to aim at always having a plan for my patients.

The above goal is related to standard 5 in a number of ways. First, the standard states that a registered nurse should carry out comprehensive assessment so that they can be able to develop a proper nursing plan (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). In addition, the standard requires the nurse to make and alter the plan as appropriate to the care. With the nursing plan, it is also possible to estimate the amount of time that nursing care will take place. In light of these observations, it is true to conclude that the second goal is related to standard 5 of NMBA standards for registered nurses 2016.

Strategies to Achieve this Goal

One strategy is to acquaint myself with the tools available for making effective plans. There many tools that the nurse can use to make their plan. For instance, there are certain checklists for certain conditions. The second strategy that I would use is to enquire from my seniors or other healthcare workers where I may need clarification. Sometimes, the best approach to carry out medical planning is to enquire from those who have experience (Millado et al, 2017).
