Management Principles: 1278305

Introduction

The report will explain the management principles of the leadership and evaluate their importance in the organization. In this report, the case study will be studied which is of John Terrill who manages the technical services of the company DGL international. He worked with the 20 engineers in the manufacturer company of the refinery equipment. In this report, all the other engineers are very much disappointed with the top management as they were not taking them seriously and their work too. So, the productivity level of the engineer is declining.

Terrill is a good leader who has launched the meeting of the engineers and takes their concerned towards the top authority. In this report, the leadership style will be explained which is most suitable for the leader John Terrill. The primary source of power behind the leadership chosen by John Terrill will also be stated. The model of the Hersey-Blanchard model will be explained to evaluate whether the leader is participative or not. The leadership approach should be used in this situation by me will also be suggested.

Leadership style used by John Terrill

Participative leadership is the most effective leadership style uses by John Terrill. Participative leadership is one of the effective managerial styles uses by John Terrill as this leadership style invites the input from the employees by determining the course of action which the company will take. In this leadership style, the employees will feel valued in the company when they are treated well and considered as an integral part of the team. An effective relationship with the employees in the team is build up when there are an effective relationship and cooperative framework (Iqbal, et al., 2015).

In the case study, John Terrill has taken the meetings of all the engineers to evaluate why productivity is declining. He has evaluated that employees have many complaints with the top authority. All the employees have the common issue that they are hired in the job as the engineer and not for the pencil pusher  (Sax and Torp, 2015). The employee does the complaint to the John that they used to spend their major part in writing the asinine reports for the top management in the triplicate but the top management does not give the value to those reports and even not read them.

After evaluating the issues of the engineers, he has talked to the senior authority regarding this. The secretary from the finance has responded to john. (Oostrom, et al., 2012). When the meeting was holding Terrill has taken cart loaded with the enormous stack of reports to show the top authority that what are engineers are working and what they are responding. The leader John Terrill placed the stack of the report on the desk of the senior authorities and they were shocked with the high reports.

The leader said the reason behind the lack of productivity in the technical division is that the materials said by them are not read by anyone (Tatlah and Iqbal, 2012).  The productivity of the employees can be used for some other things instead of making them the asinine reports which no one read. The problem of productivity in the technical department is solved by him by using his leadership.

If the employees of the company are effectively involved in the operations then not only the employee feels valued in the company but the productivity in the company also enhances. The employees in the company are empowered through participative leadership and develop more productive work progress (Khan, et al., 2015). The company work effectively if the employees worked in which they are assigned in the company and not for the work which does not belong to their field.

Participative leadership is also used by John as it develops trust among the employees and helps in taking effective decisions in the company. This leadership’s style also helps in encouraging the idea of collaboration and sharing the information and knowledge.

Describe that Terrill has less participative

According to the Hersey-Blanchard model, no one leader is best for the proper management of the business. As the leadership gets changed as per the situation occurs in the workplace. The leader of the company needs to adopt the best leadership to lead the employees and make them more productive towards the company. As the company is related to the refinery equipment and engineers have less productive in this company. So, John Terrill needs to use a better leadership style to maintain its production in the proper manner (Budin and Wafa, 2015).

The Hersey-Blanchard model includes the description of situational leadership pas the situational leadership needs to be adopted by John Terrill for getting several advantages in the business process. This improves the abilities of the employees and also improve the process used by the leaders in leading the people. By using this model, John Terrill makes better relations with the employees who have the best paid and highly educated but they are less productive (Hersey, 2014).In this model, the decision-making skills of a leader are too important as without these skills leaders cannot follow this model.

As per the study of the Hersey-Blanchard model, it has bee analyzed that John Terrill has less participative as he does not properly use the participative leadership. The leader needs to participate with the employees in the decision-making skills so that they get encouraged and motivated. But due to the less participative skill in Jhon Terrill, this leadership style does not work properly (Odoardi, et al., 2015). So, by using this model, the leader achieves several styles and knowledge regarding the proper management of the business properly.

The less participative style of leadership affects the process of the Joh Terrill and he cannot able to use the participation of the employees the process of decision-making (Rolkova and Farkasova, 2015). This model improves the leading process of the person by using the situational leadership style which works as per the situation occurs in the overall process.

No, John Terrill does not have initiated more task structure for the employees as it creates the lack of motivation among employees and it affects largely. This is one of the important process used in the overall business of the refinery equipment. The initiating o more task structures are not a good idea for the better production of the company as this creates the less motivation and also affect the leadership process of the situation as the situation cannot be controlled in the aspect of the more task that imitated by the leader (Gharibvand, 2012).

Leadership approach needs to be taken in this situation

Situational leaderships are the approach which will be taken by me for this situation. As per the situation of the leadership style of the leader should be adjusted. As per the followers or the employees, the leadership should adjust their style so that an effective decision in the company can be maintained. In this style, the leader can adopt the different leadership’s style as per the situation and helps in building the tea, or the employees in the more effective way (Vandayani, et al., 2015). In the leaderships style, the needs of the employees are taken into the priority and effective decisions are made.

As per the situation of the case study, the top management is not reading the files of the engineers so they are not giving them the value and due to which the engineers are not satisfied and even not working effectively and productivity (Hurduzeu, 2015). So as per the situational leadership’s style, it gives the value to the needs of the employees and assigns the work to them as per their capabilities and skills. In this situation, the engineers are not working as per the assigned contract they are working to write some asinine reports (Merovich and Gu, 2015). So, in this leadership style, the leader will give the work to the employees who they are needed and wanted as per their skills and knowledge so that the productivity in the company can be enhanced and even the values to the employees are also given.

Situation leaderships approach is also more effective for the situation of case study as this approach is more flexible so any employee and leader can be easily adjusted to it (McCleskey, 2014). This leaderships approach is also collaborating among the employees and encourage them to work effectively. This leadership style is also effective as top authorities are not concerning the employee’s report and they were putting the major concern towards their report and due to which the productivity in the company is declining (Germain, 2012) But by adopting the leadership’s style of the situational leaderships the company can assess the maturity level of people and tell them to assign the work which is effective for the organization and also encourages the socio-economical support for the coordinates (Dinh and Lord, 2012). These leaderships also set a beneficial balance between the whole organization of international DGL and make the refinery equipment more effective.

Conclusion

From the above report, it is concluded that leadership’s style is required in the company to make the products more effective. The company can solve any issues and problem when there is effective leadership’s style. In this report the case study of the John Terrill has studied and through that it has been evaluated that in the company DGL international, which is the manufacturer of the refinery equipment the issues related to technology has been found. But the effective leader John has used the participant leaderships style or the approach which helps the company in giving the value to their employees and should consider the work done by them to increase their productivity.

In this report, the model of the Hersey Blanchard model has also explained which makes the task structure of the engineers more effective. If I would be in the situation of John Terrill, I will choose the leadership style and approach of the Situational leaderships to make the effective decisions and to manage the technical service divisions in the company. DGL international. Participative leaderships are also used by John as it develops trust among the employees and helps in taking effective decisions in the company. This leadership’s style also helps in encouraging the idea of collaboration and sharing the information and knowledge. Situational leadership’s style helps to set the beneficial balance between the whole organizations of international DGL and makes the refinery equipment more effective.

Recommendations

John Terrill needs to follow several recommendations in leading the employees as employees are highly paid and highly educated but less productive. So, the leadership style is all about the improvement in the production process. This improves the business growth of the organization; the recommendations are based on the leadership used by the leader of the company. Some of the main recommendations are discussed below-

  • John Terrill needs to use participative leadership but involves the employees in decision-making in a proper manner.
