Features of the selected theoretical model

The authentic nurse leadership model can be used as a framework to investigate about the value of nurse practitioners in the emergency department. The significance of this model is that authentic nurse leadership is a nursing theoretical framework that supports clinical practice and knowledge development. The main rationale for choosing this framework is that leadership skill enables emergency practitioners to manage complex conditions and engage in time assessment of patients. Leaders can optimize health systems, promote management of crisis situation, effectively allocate resource and manage emotions of diverse group of patients too. Authentic nurse leadership have three characteristics such as altruism, integrity and transparency (Giordano-Mulligan & Eckardt, 2019). Thus, the value of the nurse practitioners can be investigated by comparison with these characteristics.  They have attributes of caring, ethical values, shared decision making, integral relationships and effective communication. This theoretical framework can help to evaluate whether the nursing leadership is appropriate to work in an emergency department environment. Nurse leaders have strong positive relationship with their work life and they follow relevant decision making scales. The value of a nurse in emergency care can measured by this response. Nurse practitioners are involved in regular communication while assessing and treating patients. The attributes of relational transparency can help to assess the value of nurse in terms of information sharing and open communication (Kempster, Iszatt-White & Brown, 2019).

Research appropriate for the theoretical model:

Some of the research approach that can fit with the authentic nurse leadership model includes the inductive research approach. The deductive approach involves an approach that test the validity of an assumptions whereas the inductive approach involves the process of developing new theories. Inductive approach depends on analysis of qualitative data and themes based on a conceptual framework. Hence, the use of inductive approach will facilitate developing themes and promote application of the above theoretical framework to uncover the value of nurse in emergency care. Inductive approach will facilitate use of the theoretical model to generate theory and gain knowledge about the research topic (DePoy & Gitlin, 2019). Thus, the model is suitable for the intended project as the leadership attributes will facilitate analysis of nursing characteristics and its relations with the responsibilities of an emergency practice nurse.

Qualitative method by the use of interviews are the most appropriate method for this theoretical framework. This is said because the chosen theoretical framework lists down many leadership values and attributes. Comprehensive evaluation of these outcomes can be done by the use of interview method only. The data collected from the interview can be thematically analysed based on the elements of the theoretical framework. Thematic analysis of interview data has the potential to provide various perspective on the research questions and generate proper theory or conclusion out of it (Judger, 2016).

Critique of the model

There are certain strengths as well as gaps in the theoretical model chosen for investigating values of nurse in the emergency department. The strength of the model is that it connects the competency of nurse in the emergency department with that of the skills of an authentic leaders. Emergency department is an environment where things needs to be completed in a fast way and effective leadership will determine the effectiveness of decision making process. However, one gaps in the model is that it does give any details on patient’s related outcome. Thus, to investigate about the value of nurse in emergency ward, it will be necessary to consider patient outcomes such as health status, satisfaction with care and length of hospital stay too (Hunter, McCallum & Howes, 2018).
