Introduction

The play ‘Sure Thing’ is written by David Ives which is a short comic play showing the meeting of two characters by chance and their conversation in the café which is continually reset by a ringing bell that allows the whole conversation to start over again whenever one of them gives negative responses to other so that in the end, they both become perfect companions falling in love with each other. The key theme of the play is that a certain manner of saying something will lead to different results or actions every time. It explains that if time can be reversed for a while, a person can adopt different ways for the desired action to get done. The significance of the theme is timing. If anyone gets a second chance or a new opportunity for getting the right response, one seeks to get the right combination and right approach that will ultimately win the day and in this play, win the hearts of each other. The scene chosen from the play is second conversation between the two characters Bill and Betty after the bell rang, which is significant in knowing the relevance of timing and a certain way to do things for getting the desired action.Analysis

            The second conversation between Bill and Betty reflects the conversation which is already done before but with a change in the conversation so as to reach the desired action. For instance, in the first scene, Bill asks Betty if the chair is taken. Betty says that yes it is and Bill says sorry, and Betty says ‘Sure thing’ denoting agreement. Soon after it, the bell rings, and in the second scene, Bill again asks Betty if the chair is taken, in the same manner and words he asked earlier. But, this time, Betty says, ‘No, but I’m expecting somebody in a minute’. Bill replies, ‘Oh, thanks anyway’, and the bell rings softly. This shows the difference in the timing and that it can play a major role in beginning or not beginning a relationship.

            The timing of the bell suggests that responses of Betty to Bill’s questions may have been different if the timing created by the interruptions of the bell had been different. Both the characters seem to be adjusting wrong remarks in prior conversation so as to get the desired result. For instance, the plain ‘yes’ given by Betty in first conversation is changed into a more connected response in second conversation. It is also related to the third scene when Betty says that she is expecting somebody very shortly to which Bill asks whether he could sit there. It was a progression in the conversation at the point where the bell rang in second scene (Ives 65).Conclusion

            The theme of change in the conversation due to ringing of the bell shows that the characters always go back to the conversation which had already been mentioned and then adjust the negative remarks to get closer and closer. The change of thought is quick and helps the reader understand the significance of timing and a certain manner of saying something so as to get the desired actions.
