Discussion Board Question

In thinking about children with and without disabilities, under what circumstances is it fair/reasonable to treat students differently? How can this be defended legally?

Please respond to the discussion board question above and post in the space provided below. The post should be substantive.

Please note: I can use outside scholarly resources, however I am expected to use class readings Stader, D. (2013). Law and ethics in educational leadership. Pearson. in any literature to support my case in the discussion board posts.

Failure to use class readings will count against the amount of points I can earn.

Please start the response here, post at least 250 words………………… (remember to re-read and correct any grammatical errors before you return back to me)

The Code of Ethics in education requires that teachers exhibit fairness, professional behavior, integrity, confidentiality, and objectivity in the classroom work. According to (Stader, 2013), professional educators must be able to decipher mechanisms of dealing wth the diverse attribute of children. In the classroom environment, there are those children with and without disabilities. The principle of fairness requires that all children be given equal treatment and opportunities. However, treating these children the same way could be unreasonable of a teacher. Thus,  educators should be free to diffrently treat these students. Such circumstances might include:

If there is diversity of learning skills: In a special education setting, children usually show differences in learning abilities. Due to this variance in IQ, it would be reasonable of a teacher to violate the Code of Ethics of just, because treating children with and without disabilities the same way would disadvantage those with disabilities (Stader, 2013).

If the educator is working with children of special needs: Today, courses about special educator needs are offered in almost all universities. There are those institutions whereby only special education is offered (Daniel, 2000). In such an environment, educators employ different teaching strategies to those they apply when dealing with children without disabilities.

When giving an assignment: Normally, children with disability are slow learners and thus educators should let them learn at their pace. Thus, students with disabilities should be given less involving assignments or tasked with fewer exercises compared to those without disabilities (Daniel, 2000).

Children with disability feel unworth and unwanted. Understanding their learning capabilitis is the first step to encouraging them to achieve learning success.
