Christmas is a Christian’s holiday. They celebrate all round the world every year to commemorate the birth of Jesus. In this essay I will talk about Christmas holiday in the United Kingdom. People in the United Kingdom have traditional activities to celebrate on the Christmas day. Families, friends and relatives meet each other shire party and foods to celebrate in Christmas day. Since 596 AD British people had started celebrating Christmas on December 25th. There are different reasons why they celebrate Christmas each year. Some of them believe that Christmas is religious holiday because Christians commemorate the birth of Jesus, while others celebrate it as a traditional holiday. Christmas is holiest time of the United Kingdom and a great time for families, relatives and friends to celebrate together and enjoy each other company. Christmas is special day for every person in Britain including Children, because it gives them a chance to have a great time with each other. People send Christmas Cards to their family and friend this card has picture of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus or any part of Christmas story. There are more than one kind of Christmas Card in Britain; Traditional one as what I described, Formal which has picture of a winter scene of Christmas Tree, Cut that has a little cut animal with snow and humorous card it has picture of Rudolf throwing snowballs at Santa Claus. Because Christmas is such a big holiday in the United Kingdom, British people mainly resort to traditional activities during this day. Most of Christians go to church and sing carols; during these functions they wear their best dresses and cloths. British families also have a tradition of having Christmas dinner during this time of the year, which they have between mid day and early afternoon on Christmas day. A Christmas dinner contains roast turkey or goose, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, rich nutty stuffing, tiny sausage wrapped in bacon and lashings of hot gravy. Christmas Pudding is the dessert of that day which is similar to fruitcake but it is streamed. It is brown pudding with raisins, nuts and cherries. It is served with custard or brandy sauce. Some English families have a traditional Christmas Tea during which they come together at Christmas day evening with their relatives to have party games. They drink tea with Christmas cake and Mince pies, variety of cheeses, variety of dips, snowmen buns, Yule log cake, carrots and celery sticks. Christmas cracker is another activity that is common among the British people. It is brightly cardboard tube decorated twisted of the end. It contains a small gift, a paper crown and a joke written in a small paper. When family, friends sit near the table the food cracker is distributed. To open it cross your arms and hold your cracker on the right hand and your neighbor cracker in the left hand then pull yours and your neighbor cracker. The other activities in Christmas include exchange the gifts between loves, relatives and friends. Giving gift in Christmas is related to the gift that the wise men (the Magi) gave it to Jesus. Queen’s Christmas message is one of the traditional features in the United Kingdom. Queen gives her Christmas message to the nation at three-clock afternoon. The Queen’s message is broadcasted on media around the United Kingdom.
Santa Claus is the famous traditional feature of the Christmas day. He is known as the father of Christmas in the United Kingdom. Children in Christmas get gifts from Santa Claus by hanging stockings on bookshelf to put his gift in it. Also children try to please father of Christmas by keeping cakes and pastries along with the socks.
Christmas trees are the other traditional item among British houses. The British people started using the Christmas trees since 1841 when Prince Albert brought it from Germany and put it in Windsor Castle. These days most people use artificial trees to save the green environment. Tinsels, lights, small ornaments and chocolate coins or chocolate shapes, hang Christmas trees Presents put under the Christmas tree.
In conclusion British people around the United Kingdom come celebrate in Christmas day. British share their foods and gifts with their families and friends. They decorate their house and arrange different functions. Kids in the Christmas day wait for Santa Clause to receive lovely gifts from him. Everyone in Britain has a nice time and celebrates it in the best way possible
