English assignment on: Language is an entity
The language is an entity which always remains in flux, with time it is always under play as it always changes with the merging conditions and the social situations. The people today have become advanced with technology as the Web 2.0 has ensured great advancement through the ready access and the rapid networks which it allows the people to form. Language itself is a play of words which can be used by molding it and twisting it according to the need of the situation more than the need of the time. The generation today is doing away from the traditional usage of the language which one can find in the newspapers and such reporting mediums even today as the same are present at the internet in the ‘e’ form that is e-news and so on. The generation today therefore has been indulging itself into questioning that what could be the new system which is meant for the present generation Y and that how could be changed and used according to their rules. This way the existing theories of the grammar like the morphological constructions, the lexical rules and the new phrases have been exploding the new diction today (Baron, N 2000).
It can be said that the people today are starting linguistics afresh from the scratch and trying to question the traditional usage or at least deconstructing the existing social language patterns. The person who uses internet today wishes to have a new definition of everything and therefore wants to be guided by his/her own set of rules in terms of morphological innovation, like at many social networking sites the examples like ‘friend’ has been changed into ‘un friend’ and ‘like’ gives one the option to ‘un like ‘ anything. These words are the ones which have an altogether traditional meaning if one goes buy the standard dictionaries. In this regard one can say that the language which is being used at the internet is wide away from any intention of confirming these expressions and the words to the linguistic domain. Also the use of the acronyms and the symbols have been continuously used in order to define a new lexical system, in the language of the internet the misspellings and the sue of the symbols and the numerical within the words have made the lexical structure altogether different, like the has been often spelled as ‘d’ or ‘the’ and everybody by default understands that what it could have meant (Bodomo, A., & Lee, C 2001). There are the words which also were easily identifies in the dictionary before but now they have lost their importance as now they are only graphically available like the ‘smiley’ and the substitute for the same is ‘ J’ or ‘L’, also the word ‘emoticon’ has made its permanent place in the chat-rooms and the message windows. Similarly the letters have been fixed in the new language system with the numbers or the short forms like ‘for-4’, ‘you-u’ and ‘too-2’, ‘later-l8r’a and many more. The use of the acronyms is also very common in the daily interaction at the web portals and the discussions. The frequently used example is ‘LOL’ that stands for Laughing out Loud, but the reality in the contemporary times is that it is just so frequently used in the conversations that it has almost lost the semantic value which it ideally should have. The language today is not used seriously and therefore the words cannot be believed at their face value, so it is seen that even if somebody uses LOL, then the person is very much away from the loud laughter that it implies. Not only denotative, but the connotative aspect has also been turned upside down in such an innovative trend of the language today (Steinbergs, A 1997).
The game of language today has become very casual in itself and therefore the expression does not match the degree which it should ideally possess. Now, the short phrases and the expressions are even becoming shorter, like ‘Happy Birthday- Happy B’day’, ‘about-bout’, ‘people-ppl’, ‘thanks-thx’. One can though deliver the same message to others as ever before, but there can be found a huge difference in the language than earlier. Though the message is delivered but the same lacks effectiveness in the way it is written. One can say that these changing patterns in the trends of the virtual networks is defining a sub-culture of its own as a language only emerges from an existing cultural scenario and this respect it can be said that the sub-culture of the internet society is being cooked up through the strategies which revolve around new morphological structures and the collective beliefs of the individuals. Though the language has advanced much but in today’s times it can be said that the aesthetic meaning out of the words has been lost, and so the language does not play the role it should play after the innovation which it has acquired in the recent years (Rumsien, G 2004).
