Studies of Mgt. & Org.,vol. 38, no. 1, pp. 30–47.This article argues that the notion of general management that was proposed by Henri Fayol, actually determine management fashions till today. Such management fashions though are taught in schools and universities now but such readings need an order because they are confusing to an extent. However, according to the author, Frederick Taylor’s notions of management are more accurate in describing managerial practices. The author elaborates upon the concept of Management functions, which only means the management recommendations in any organisation. The article asserts that recommendations are always necessary in an organisation as they tell that how managers should be reacting to situations and acting in a manner which is effective and efficient for the organisation, rather than having a strict practice. The main idea is that how the field of management would have fared if Taylor would have been appreciated in those times, when Fayol was ever so influential. As, it asserts that in the reign of Fayol the whole managerial system is effected, the Managerial practices are disordered, as it is important to see the life of an average manager that he spends out of the organisation. Thus, there are important issues like the alliances they form outside organisation and they aren’t always pleasant, thus affecting their organizational behavior. Even a general change in strict management fashions may bring a frown on a manager’s face. Author’s preference of Taylor as a management guru over Fayol is further marked by the fact that his management framework expected all kinds of the works to be managed by the managers in the total working of an organisation whereas Fayol proposed a distinction to be present between the managers and the working of an organisation. It is almost an inevitable phenomenon called Fayolism that remains there through time, and it provides no space for any concept like Taylorism to sail in the terrain of management.
