Writing Assignment help on : Social Work
Social Work itself is a kind of job which is taken up by the individuals who are selfless and believe in helping out the people in distress. A social supporter is a building block of the society who cares for those individuals who cannot support themselves because of the lacking capabilities in them or when they are physically or mentally not fit. It is a kind of a work which requires patience, big heart and affection more than any degree or qualification as required for a job. These social elements are the ones who possess a selfless attitude and thus are ready to help others out of distress and solitude in their life. In a way the task is to assist the people who are facing the natural atrocities in their life, and in turn need care and some concern. Social work is empowering and foremost it is guided by a personal attachment with a particular section of the society. In the present context this paper would focus upon the social work for adults and that how personalization can bring a big difference to it. The given case study which is about a 38 year old Joe who suffers from learning disability and is helpless because he feels lame and has many obligations in his way, the one who is disliked by others and thus lives under the protection of his 83 year old mother Marjorie. The lady in the house is the one who has the responsibility of his son to the extent that he even needs to be physically protected from any intruders from the society. Their situation makes it clear that Marjorie is the one who must be working both physically and emotionally to survive. The situation of this family is even degenerated now after Marjorie is hospitalized and in her a few symptoms of Dementia are even seen. Joe must be suffering a lot and his position is almost so serious because he always was dependent on Marjorie as only she could handle him effectively and nobody else. His sister Susan also is in such a condition that is helpless from both her health and familial perspective. She believes she cannot support Joe well, because she does not even have the resources to help him out (Reed Business Information 2012).
Personalisation is an important area of social work and it is something which is totally humane and has the basic purpose to help out the people by strengthening their moral. In case of Joe, personalization is the right area of social work which can come to his rescue. Joe is not the one who is abnormal but is very slow in understanding what goes around him, as it is mentioned that he has his emotions intact when it is mentioned that he also wishes to find ‘someone special’ one day. Joe should be provided the care and comfort just like a small child is treated. In personalization work with Joe, the social worker would have to take care that his central needs are made out so that he in turn finds it normal to share his emotions just like he used to share his anxieties and his feelings. Personalisation is centered on giving a choice to the individual and then controlling their lives, this aspect of personalized social work for the people is beyond the provision of the money or the raising of the funds for them. Personalisation would address the basic rights of Joe, and that what he feels about himself and all that is needed to fulfill his requirements. There can be many situations in which social worker might feel a little uncomfortable or Joe might feel so, the situations might have an ethical constraint or some feeling of discomfort as the other is also an adult (Department of Health 2010).
Personalisation as a method of social work has been seen as a great radical change in the domain of social work. The contribution for making the personalisation as an important part of this work is made by the important policy makers, the writers and the researchers too. The other name of the personalisation agenda can be called as the transformational agenda with validation to the interests of the government of UK. The government has done much in the new social care system and thus has even invested over half a billion within the three years so that the change which would eventually be brought out should render a big change in the society. This is a modern agenda which the government planned to invest into and that was done by switching to the idea of allowing individual budgets. This meant the allocation of some amount of money to the individuals who were eligible and it has to be there call to how to spend it when the support to the society has to be given (Lymbery, M 2012). This way the government in its working framework has put faith in the social care members so that they can design their way to support the needy. In terms of the finance the scheme of allocating the individual budget holds a much larger purpose and therefore aims at bringing a massive change in the prevailing system of social care.
If the area of personalisation in social work is taken further then equal changes would be required in the care market i.e. of funding, the local /regional authorities, the care workers and the service users too. Thus Martin Routledge, who has a lead responsibility for personalisation at the Department of Health’s Care Services Improvement Partnership, commented in April 2008: ‘This is going to be a long and challenging journey. Lots of worries and barriers in the way of it, but it’s worth struggle and pain over the next few years’ (Brindle and Watt 2011). Though with relation to the budget when it comes to the personalisation, there have been many inputs from many social workers or the social commentators; according to Charles Leadbeater they could provide better services to the people even if they had a lesser budget, and in the year as a suggestion he asserted that savings for the nation could be much higher that is 45%.
The association of the personalization to the social care ensures a greater shift in the public policy and therefore it means that the policies today are holding a wider perspective because they are being recognized for the housing, employment, planning etc. Personalisation in the social care is now making sure that the people get choices and the control over what service they wish to have. This area of social work is going completely customized and thus has been shifted from only being residential to the day care services. The services which the people receive is always regardless of who provide the same, but the centre of the focus is the ‘outcomes’ in the lives of the people. The first individual budgets were seen to be developed for the people having the learning disabilities, but then in a conferences which was organised in the year 2008 by London Direct Payments Forum, a project worker brought out an ironical point that the people who are suffering from the learning disabilities did not knew anything about the concept of personalization (Boxall 2009)
There are many organisations which support the social working as adhering to the needs of the adults. The main motive as a social supporter is that major areas are worked upon, they are Capacity Building, and it is seen as a fundamental approach that has an underlying concept which would focus on understanding the hindrances that circumscribe the people, the governing bodies or any related organizations to the community. The major responsibility of the social worker in a personalized set up would be to help them to know the primary goals to help the adults who have certain disabilities. This also includes the enhancement of the abilities that are necessary for favorable outcomes. Further, social empowerment is also an important step while indulging in this support work. Empowerment can be interpreted in many was where its prime meaning would be retained in every context and that is to increase the strength in both mental and the physical contexts. In the present situation as the focus is upon developing the personality of Joe would be most important and thus taking his care is of much significance. It would mean that empowerment is to increase the social, mental, political and the spiritual strength of the individuals (Clarke, J et al. 2007). In a personalized social work it is seen that the people who are being helped are only treated as the human beings and other factors like their behavior and the attitudes never become the obstacles in treating them with affection. Also, the equality is granted to each individual who seeks rest and comfort in an unknown’s company. There are many situations when the social worker might face many social dilemmas but then it all gets sorted once the morally upright decisions are taken. Communication is the key to success, and that is the primary focus which every personalised worker would be using at the optimum at this profession. In this particular context also, Joes’s needs might be changing through time and that would lead the social worker to take up new roles and the ways to help him out, sometimes by acting like a friend to Joe. It would also be the responsibility of the social worker to let Joe meet Marjorie whenever Joe misses her. Therefore, the social worker has to act as a catalyst to let these suffering adults to meet their requirements (Department of Health 2005) .
It is easily observable that an independent support is being provided to the social care workers and that the concept of personalisation is being promoted in the many parts of the UK. In many organisations in the UK there is noticed that the social workers still abided by the traditional sides of their work, as they paid less attention on the provision of the rationing resources for the needy but according to Department of Health, the social workers should start working more clearly (Department of Health 2008). The social work and the personalisation are related to each other, but the relationship is a little complex to be understood explicitly at a go. It has to be understood that social work related to any profession does promote the overall change in the regular trends of the society, the technique of problem solving when it comes to the human relationships the social work in fact becomes more effective because it makes the people more empowered and liberate the people through their present condition so as to enhance their well-being (Department of Health 2006). In a personalised social work scenario it is noticed that they utilise the theories of the behaviour in which the humans react and especially in the present context when Joe is also suffering, his condition makes him remain isolated from the society, and the human relationships which he has is constrained. There are four important elements which are included are the social change, social well-being, human rights and the social justice.
Apart from talking about how the policy has been changed in today’s time when it comes to social work for the adults having learning disability is that they should be understood for what they are and how they behave. There are many concepts that are related to the individual with the disability, like the people who are suffering from this state, i.e. the people like Joe in the given case study tend to have more feelings related to how they want to stay. As for living alone, there are both the positive and the negative aspects (Duffy, S 2010). The person does somewhere have some apprehensions about staying lonely and thus might feel scared if he thinks about the future of the people (Moran, N et. al. 2012). The individuals tend to relax often and live independently and they always had the feeling that they could easily cope up with the decision of living independently. In case of Joe the feeling was inverted because he is seen to be highly depended on his mother. It cannot be said that it was solely out of learning disability because according to the facts that are given it is that he is mildly suffering from the same, but yes he suffers from high levels of anxiety and depression and that is why his behaviour could be such. In this case it is important for the social care specialist to understand that Joe might not be as slow in his learning abilities as he is said to be, because there might be present something more to his present condition (Barrett G, Sellman D & Thomas J 2005). The social care worker has to make best out of the personalisation towards Joe, so as to make him believe that he is important and not somebody unwanted in the society. The factor of living independently has to be initiated among these people, because then people like Joe instead would try to live independently and it would be helpful enough for them to leave off depression and low mood which is generally experienced by him.
There is a great need of possessing the ethics and the value for the social work that is done by the carer. Yes, it cannot be denied that it is professionalism but there is an equal need of being highly sensitive to the people who have to be cared for. Values are those principles which have to exist in any social condition but in a legit manner. They can be defined by the society or might be self defined too and they are the beliefs which are held true and are directed to bring a positive change in the present scenario. Therefore, in the specific case of the personalisation in the social work practice values have an important place in the life of the individual who is suffering and the one who is catering to the requirements of the person. The values of the social worker should always remain intact towards Joe, because he is the target of the society because he is abused and is always looked down upon, else he would not have been waiting at the age of 38 for that special someone who should be there for him. In order to be sensitive to Joe in this case it would be important to plan out certain things in order which would work like an intervention technique for him. This would save him from any further breakdown because in any case he would be missing his mother and thus might be a tough situation to handle him. The right intervention method for Joe at this time would be to focus on Empowerment that requires planning. Planning is something which is takes place in a way that responds to the basic needs of the people who have certain traumas. Planning is done after the proper investigation of the mental state of the individual, which enhances its effectiveness. The basic idea is that the individuals should undergo a detailed and the comprehensive assessment so that their sustainable development is possible. These adults are the ones which are formed after proper planning and thus are designed in such a manner that further promotes the sustainable development of the members of the community. This would mean that the people are treated as the equivalent members in the society and all the basic necessities shall be provided to them. Sustainability shall be there in the domain of economics, living conditions and the municipal infrastructure. Social work interventions are selected on the basis of the issues, needs and strengths of the suffering individuals (Ferguson, I 2007). These are determined as a result of a psychosocial assessment conducted by the social worker. In initial meetings with the individual, the social worker will obtain extensive information from the person in order to develop a detailed and comprehensive understanding.
The social policy in the UK therefore is of the central view that there should be equal treatment o the people with the learning disabilities and the work should be done to improve the life chances for those people. Also, the policy is made strongly to support the families of such people, in this case the work would also contribute to improve the condition of Marjorie in whom there are seen the symptoms of Dementia at a starting level. The legislative framework of the country as advertised by the Department of Health is that the people with such disabilities should always try to lead their lives like the normal people with whom they are surrounded. They are the social beings who live with regard to the same human rights and the opportunities which are given to just any other social being in the country. Personalisation, now a core area in social work, as introduced in the 2008 reform at Whitehall, the inclusion should be the sole social motive. This method of inclusion is meant for the specifically those who have been excluded particularly and should be empowering in turn. In order to take notice of the contemporary medical policies with regard to the same has also been reported by Winterbourne View Hospital recently in December this year, it said that the vulnerable people who are socially abused should not be living in the hospitals as regular patients but should be given a chance to have experience residential care. Secondly, the policy is directing to create strong groups of that of the senior managers in the spring of 2013 for the safety and the quality care of the individuals with learning disabilities and by the June of the next year the currently prevailing placements would be reviewed and revised if necessary, and the people who are hospitalized would by then be shifted to the regional or the community support workers which would not take longer than a year. The plan of the hospital is that by the spring of 2014, the people who are regarded as ‘slow’ by the society, the ones who are mentally challenged or having autism would be accustomed to work upon their behavior that has to be in line with the best practice. One more scheme in the policy is that there would be unannounced inspections in the residential cares and the community workers would be checked for the work they do.
According to the report of the Department of Health, there are important national actions which are being taken and actions which have the potential to make a success with the people who are vulnerable and are suffering from learning disabilities. At the same time they are significant for the families who are indirectly being affected by the same. Like, Marjorie is the one who is suffering because in an old age she is was living an abnormal life by taking care of a well grown up man Joe, her son, who is tagged as slow by the society. This family is a living example of how the vulnerable individual adds to a vulnerable family who is a prey to this learning disability, because it is emotionally exhausting. This condition is pretty much visible in the condition of Marjorie who is now. Thus, the social actions are that people like Joe and their families would be given an open access to the visitors who come and see them and for the advocates or the health professionals who would be coming to take care of them and instead would be encouraging them to demand the services which should be provided to them. Introduction of the Concordat would be another step forward for the vulnerable beings it would be a collaborated social policy where the other organisations like Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, ,NHS Commissioning Board, the Royal Colleges and the Local Government Association would be joining hands, so as to encourage personalisation.
It has to be noticed that personalisation can only be enhanced when the individuals are empowered. Empowerment is said to be both intrinsic and the extrinsic like the motivation only, where extrinsic factors are the social intervention techniques used by the social workers. The intrinsic factor is the self- reflection of the individual to find the positive elements in his/her life’s and should evaluate the self according to the targets which the person wants to achieve. Like in Joe’s case he needs to be encouraged over his love and fetish for watching DVDs, and therefore he should be made to take part in his favorite activity whenever he requires it (Bank, S 2006). This way the social worker somewhere would be substituting top the role of the family of the individual with the learning disability. This would act as an intrinsic motivation for the vulnerable being because he would feel like attending to his needs happily. Thus the social work professionals are thus expected to provide the crucial skills as the necessary help to the individuals seeking rescue so that they can somehow be inspired. The approach is though individualistic in nature but the whole with which it is primarily guided is completely social in nature (Leece, J and Peace, S 2010). Thus the approach cannot be defined it varies according to the time and the situation. The empowerment has to be honest in nature which shall be free from any bias or discrimination related to class, ideology, race or gender, thus being ethical in nature (Smith, N 2007). Thus, empowerment lies at the heart of the social intervention that is widely practiced across the national boundaries. This is how only a social intervention process can encourage the social change and help in further social reformations for the betterment of the human population.
It can be concluded that the able carers or the social care professionals have the capacity to contribute to every life which is vulnerable or lacking experience of the world, they are the individuals who lack support from the society and are looked down at. Personalisation somewhere is a clashing idea in the society today because it has been enforced by the society but yet is not being ethically accepted by the people in the society. This concept of personalisation is as much crucial and as much it is critical also, because there is a constant clash between the believers of the consumerism and the followers of the liberalism (Gamble, A 2001). It can be brought that undoubtedly personalisation is significant and is much in alignment with the principles of social work. The social work which includes the personalisation as a technique is much hard because it includes the ethics and the values of the people who work for the others but it is seen that in the contemporary it is very much absent from the conscience of the people. The psychology of the social workers is deeply driven by the financial concerns which they have and therefore they only accept the ‘others’ in the society (Dilnot 2011). This is another facet of the human society today which disturbs the equilibrium and therefore makes the people like Joe feel unsafe if they are not mentally as capable as the others. The sooner it would be realized that the vulnerable people in the society need a better social support with respect to any other community then the half of the battle would be won (Ellis, K 2007). It has to be realized that it is not about safeguarding them, but is all about transforming this mental blockade in the society, and to accept a transformational agenda like personalisation. In reference to Joe, Marjorie and Susan also it could be applied because then it can be seen that if Susan’s family would have been understanding then they could be of some help to the old Marjorie and adult Joe, but that link was missing because of the strange attitude they held towards Joe and considered him as slow. There is a huge need to adapt to the policies which have been discussed in detail above so that the government of UK becomes the one nation to have a healthy legislative framework that would b of great relief to families’ like Joe’s. The social work with personalization is the only way out for a social success at the same time by showing their mirror image to the society (Gann, N 1996). It needs to be realized that policies also cannot work unless it is implemented with high spirits.
