Writing Assignment help on : Communication
Effective communication is a very important element in contemporary societies. As most of the parts of the world are diversified, thus learning communication skills is a positive practice. In many cases, people tend to go through miscommunications and do not understand what the other person is speaking, which is a result of improper communication skills. In this context, it is very important for the organizations to understand the complex issues related to communication and acknowledge the diversity. Several instances of communication issues and discrimination based on this are observed in the larger society, this prejudice can be found in educational settings, health care settings, companies, railway station, airports and etc. Therefore, the government and various non-governmental organizations should work to build appropriate communication skills within people and to stop discriminatory practices, based on these misunderstandings.
According to the case study, a lady who was admitted to the hospital two weeks before her delivery experienced such discrimination and prejudice against her. The case took place in a n hospital, wherein the professionals and the staff members are trained to take care of patients and hold an unbiased opinion in their thinking. However, the woman was not treated fairly; in fact she was ill treated in the hospital. In spite of the interpreter, the nurse did not follow with the medicines on time, while blaming to the differences in language. Moreover, when the doctors came for routine checkup, the nurses drew the curtains and told them that she does not need it as she does not understand English. Thus, not only the woman, but the child was also suffering as it is very important for the professionals to take proper care of the pregnant patients. Moreover, the child in this stage would also need health care facilities. Finally, in the second week, the woman took her belongings and went to the nurse. She had a feeling of disrespect, discrimination and felt that her image of stereotyped by the hospital staff and particularly the nurses. Adding to this, when the nurse provided with another interpreter, he could not understand the women’s dialect as he belonged to western Africa, while the woman belonged to eastern part of Africa. Thus, she suffered again as their dialects did not match and hence miscommunication between the two continued. Furthermore, even after this whole situation, there was no action taken against the authority and the woman felt alone. There was not even a single person who supported her, as a result of which the woman suffered immense inequalities and discriminatory practices. Moreover, the child’s condition had worsened during the time and the health became a serious concern for two. But the authorities did not take any step and neither had they inquired the nurses for their behavior.
It is important to note here that such cases can be found in several other settings also wherein the clients, students and other people are discriminated due to their lack of communication skills and cultural differences. Therefore, it is important for the organizations to give importance to this aspect in their working and acknowledge the diversity. In this context, the organizations should provide equal values to the individual and community identities of the people, which can be done by maintaining a balance between the two. Thus, the organizations should aim to maintain equilibrium in the private self and the social self. Such practice would lead to the development of proper value notions to the individuals because they would be identified with their personal attributes and would also be included in their respective social settings. Furthermore, it has been observed that in traditional societies, people were characterized from the group or social settings they belonged to, while in industrial societies, they are characterized from their individual attributes. But as a matter of fact, even in contemporary times and industrial societies, many people are characterized from their group identities, thus completely ignoring the fact that they even have personal identity (Differences in Communication Culture n.d.). Further, in each setting communication and cultural identities of different individuals play an important role to understand each other in a society or a social order. This is because of the stereotypical notions of different groups that an individual gets attached to. In this regard, it is important to understand the relevance of culture in an individual’s life. Culture refers to those values, notions and ideologies that are passed from one generation to another in a group. Thus, culture is something that a person inherits from his or her family and creates perception according to it. The four primary cultural dimensions are patterns of thought, patterns of behavior, patterns of artifacts and imprints in nature. Henceforth, an individual becomes closely related and attached to his or her culture and formulates a personality according to it. In many cases, it has been noted that people fail to understand each other’s culture and perspective about different things. Thus, it is important to inculcate tendencies that would create patience and respect among each other, contributing to unity in diversity in the society. The factor of communication plays an important role here because the lack of communication skills and alienation from each other’s languages result in the demarcation of such differences. Historically, the world has witnessed several cases wherein discriminatory practices have led to genocides. These are instances where in the meeting of different cultures and traditions lead to misunderstandings between people. Thus, it is extremely mandatory for the people to know that a certain attitude of an individual does not mean that the whole group or the community is bad, which is what people think mostly. Moreover, it is not only the behavior of people that changes the perception, but also the color, differences in language and unfamiliar traditions that lead to discriminatory practices against a certain group. The malpractices of racism and caste differences are the results of such biased notions. In this context, it is also important to note here that language also plays an important part that leads to discriminatory and stereotypical notions. Mostly, people perceive that if an individual does not know English or cannot speak it well, then that person is different to the society and seen as a downtrodden individual. Such is the situation of the woman in the presented case study. Moreover, if an individual makes grammar mistakes due to the unfamiliarity in language, then again he or she is seen as indifferent to the society. In terms of communication processes, different societies and traditions have different level of communication levels when they meet a person. For instance, in the case of classical China, a handshake is sufficed, but in France a handshake with an embrace is seen as normal. Thus, these communication differences often lead to misunderstandings in different cultural contexts, and hence produce discrimination with prejudice. Lack of understanding can be a result of many factors such as strong expectations from the different cultural groups, low awareness and knowledge about different cultural groups, lack of motivation to understand the other person’s needs and forms of communication, misinterpretation of the words used by the other individual. Henceforth, it is important for the individuals to carry a flexible attitude and keep their perceptions aside while dealing with the people of different traditions (Allwood, J. 1985). Furthermore, in the context of communication, the body language also plays a very important role while perceiving another individual. Thus, people in an organization should keep a track of different forms of body language used by individuals of different social groups. For instance, in the United States, a finger or a hand is used to ask people to ‘come here’; while in some cultures this gesture is used to beckon dogs. Moreover, the pointing from a finger is considered as rude in some cultures, thus the conflict in this case can arise. Similarly, patting on head is a gesture of friendly attitude in some cultures, however in the Asians countries’, patting on head is not recommended as head is considered as a sacred part in the human body. Furthermore, in several Western countries, it is important to keep an eye contact while talking to people and carrying a conversation, as it is considered to denote honesty and confidence in people. Contrary to this, in many Hispanic, Asian, Middle East and Native American societies, gazing in eyes is considered disrespectful and rude, the same attributes are taken as negative forms of communication. Moreover, it is mandatory for the women not to look in the eyes of women while conversing, as this attitude is taken as a gesture of sexual interest. Therefore, it is important to understand that each form of society has different traditions, culture and communication skills. A thing considered to be sacred is profane in another society. Such as the color of while, because in western societies white is worn by brides on their wedding day, contrary to this, in India white is worn by a widow. Henceforth, while dealing with people of different communities, it is important to acknowledge and respect such differences by understanding each other’s point of views (Vermont Department of Health n.d.). Therefore, the important element to stop and avoid such practices is to understand the differences between individuals. Thus, people should be patient enough to understand that the other person might be unfamiliar to the language, or may not like certain ways of interaction, moreover the person might have misheard (Torppa, C. 2010). Similarly, in the case of the woman, the nurses did not show patience and objective understanding while dealing with the patient. They did not even consider understanding her point of view and lacked efficiency in their working. Moreover, they insulted her and disrespected her lack of the understanding of English language. It was the duty of the authorities to take an important step and apologies from the woman, but they did not even do so.
Finally, the woman learnt English and completed her education because it was impossible for her to sustain su.ch malpractices and discrimination against her. It was a strong step that the women took, considering that in future her child may also suffer from the same. This is another solution to the problem. But as individual and more importantly as human beings it is the duty of each one of us to stop such discrimination against a particular community. Moreover, it is also mandatory to realize that we as human have crossed the barbaric and semi barbaric stages of development, and turned out to be civilized men and women. Making advancements in science and technology are not enough for us to be represented as civilized people, it is also important to change our attitudes and form the notions of equality for all. These aspects are often penned down in the constitution set up of different countries, however we should ask the question that how many people actually practice it. Differences between individuals, cases of racism and ethnic conflicts are common instances in the world in fact; the whole world is suffering from such crises. Thus, as a social worker I would consider the fact that people in the society should treat each other equally and respect each other’s cultural differences. Therefore, the government and various non-governmental organizations should work to build appropriate communication skills within people and to stop discriminatory practices, based on these misunderstandings. As mentioned above, it is important to note here that such cases can be found in several other settings also wherein the clients, students and other people are discriminated due to their lack of communication skills and cultural differences. Therefore, it is important to understand that each form of society has different traditions, culture and communication skills.
