The Rachel’s school is found to performing certain good activities, such as, professional planning of lessons, individual and collective training of pupils for Additional languages. The school provides peaceful and calm atmosphere in classrooms and library which support pupils to concentrate on their work.
The information record maintenance by TA of all the pupils they work with is also a good practice for proper planning, but all information is kept confidential. The school has rules and policies for everything whether it is about maintaining records or praising pupils, are supervising their behavior which helps both teachers and teaching assistant to help students regularly. Such practices which are adopted by Rachel’s schools have helped the school in maintaining a friendly and healthy environment.
Each student is different from the other, and Rachel is working with a range of pupils. She is working with a student who is suffering with hyperactivity disorder, and then she is also attending a group of 10 pupils in their literacy and others. With Michael, who is having ADHD problem, and so he could not concentrate for more ten 10 minutes, to support him Rachel breaks his task in short achievable task, and keep praising him in completion of his tasks, which has benefitted him. As each child is different and so are their likes and dislikes, so Rachel needs to have proper information and record of each child which has to be updated regularly, so that she can support both teachers and pupils better. For proper planning she is maintaining information record of each student. She is also dealing with year 8 class having issues in literacy, numeracy and behavior. The discussion with teachers and joint lesson planning helps her in supporting her pupils of year 8 class more efficiently. According to (Versey, 2006), the prime role of a teaching assistant is the learning of students either individually or collectively, the TAs also helps teacher in preparing, worksheets and recording assessments, and they also suggests teachers how to support their pupils for better learning.
Rachel also understands her pupil’s likes and dislikes, and is advisable by (Versey, 2006), that even though the TA is attached to one student but it will be more productive if they do collective work, this is good for both pupil and the other students. As TAs are more approachable for students then the teachers, so it is important for Rachel to maintain healthy relationships with students, but within professional boundaries. Rachel also takes rounds to keep an eye over her students to understand their off-task behaviors (Versey, 2006).In contrast to the way she was dealing with Michael, she has to deal with other students in library. She had to be with Michael and continually support him in his tasks, whereas in library she encourages her pupils to work independently in a quite and peaceful environment like library. Rachel also investigates what her pupils like to do and what they don’t and support them accordingly.
