One cannot work continuously and this is a known fact to everybody and hence, everybody should take a break on weekends and spend time with their family so that they can come back to the office in a refreshed mood. If some problem is going on in the personal-front then that problem will for affect the professional performance and hence, it is the responsibility of the employer to take care of their employees so that they perform more.
Literature review
Rego (2010) says that it is very important for a couple to be connected to each other and being connected to each other allows them to be together. The number of divorces is increasing and it can be said that “no work-life balance” is one of the reasons. Technology allows couples to be in touch with each other and this is how life moves today towards work-life balance.
Microsoft believes that if they take care of all the requirements of an employee then the employee will be happy and relaxed. Any service that may required by the employee’s family at home is provided by them and they believe that if such environment is created then employees with trust their employers. The employees are happier because at the end of the day, they know that their organization will take care of their loved ones.
Many employers believe that email is allowing employees to have work life balance. With the help of email, people can stay at home and work thus, allowing to spend time with the family. At the same time, some researchers have found that work-life balance is spoiled due to email access. If an employee receives an email on weekends, when he is spending time with his loved ones, can actually cause stress (Waller, R 2012).
Life becomes even more difficult when both the couples are working. It is always better to look for some help from people around so that the couple can be happier together rather than parting ways because of lack of time. The couples should prefer to work in the same shift timings so that they can come home together and spend at least some time with each other. They are various training centers available so the couple can join there to know more about work-life balance (Kaiser, R, E C, 2011).
Research methodology
Few of the facts that will give a clear idea regarding the search for this report is described in brief below.
Work-life balance is qualitative in nature and hence, the research is also qualitative based. Work-life balance is something, that is, achieved mentally so if a person is positive enough then he can work for 24 hours a day, then too achieve work-life balance and at the same time, it may not be achieved by a person who works for 6 hours a day.
Work-life balance is a fundamental research because with the help of this report, one cannot achieve work-life balance. One needs to identify the problems that he and his family is facing and then accordingly, they should decide on the steps.
Scope
Work-life balance will help employees and employers to make life better and easier. This is the need of the hour so every employee should try to achieve it and every organization must implement policies that will help the professionals to achieve it.
Limitations
The data, that is, collected is completely secondary so there are possibilities that the working people may be coping with stress in some other way.
There was a time constraint so a detailed study on the subject wasn’t possible.
What is work-life balance?
Today, people are struggling between office and work and if a person is able to satisfy his employer and his family then it can be said that work-life balance has been achieved. Employers also want their employees to spend quality time with their loved ones because this will allow them to be relaxed at the end of the day and they will perform better in the organization.
Work-life balance really doesn’t mean that an individual needs to spend equal time at home and office. Life cannot be controlled in a stressful manner thus, one should relax rather than preparing a time-table for everything. At every point of time in life, the work-life balance will vary from situation to situation. If an employee is single then he will work in the office on weekdays and party hard on the weekends and if an employee is newly-married then he will try to spend some time every day with his wife. Work-life balance for a 25 year old guy and 58 year old man may vary. If a person is willing to achieve work-life balance then they cannot just copy it from someone else, they will have to create one for themselves. (WorkLifeBalance 2003)
How can a person achieve work-life balance by himself?
If a person wants to really be peaceful then he should work on it rather than being dependant on the employer. Few steps that will help every person to achieve work-life balance and reduce stress are as follows: –
- A person should remove time from his schedule for activities that he loves to do. If a person loves to spend time with his wife then he can give himself a lucrative gift whenever he does that. If a plan has been made and if the person is aware that doing so will refresh him then he shouldn’t cancel that under any condition (Uscher).
- One should avoid things that forces a person to stay back in the office for a longer time. Everybody has to put 8 productive hours in the office but if a person goes on a personal call then they will have to stay back in the evening. This will create a lot of stress and hence, its better to take personal calls after office hours if overloaded with work (Uscher).
- Spending time with family is not the only way to achieve work-life balance because that too can create stress. One should relax at least for some time on the weekends so that they can get back to work in a fresh mood rather than that of feeling tired after the weekend party (Uscher).
Employers and work-life balance
Employers can help employees to achieve work-life balance and this has become one of the best retention policies that is being followed by many organizations.
Flexible work timings are one thing that will allow employees to concentrate on work and personal life. Many organizations ask their employees to work for 8 productive hours as per their convenience and this will allow the person to adjust their timing with that of other family members (GovernmentOfAustralia 2006).
The HR from the organization can talk to the employees regarding the problems that they are facing in the workplace. A separate policy cannot be created for everybody so if the majority of the employees doesn’t like certain things then that needs to be changed rather than that of pushing it forcibly (GovernmentOfAustralia 2006).
The pre – exit interview is one of the best ways to understand the employees because while staying with the organization, the employee cannot talk about the things that they don’t like but they can do that before leaving. The Human resource manager in the organization should talk about things that the employee doesn’t like so that the manager will get a clear view of the situation (GovernmentOfAustralia 2006).
The reporting authority should be held responsible for providing work-life balance for their team members. Human resource manager can introduce employee-friendly policy but the HR professionals cannot maintain a relationship with everybody in the organization and this is possible only by the reporting authority (GovernmentOfAustralia 2006).
Benefits of work-life balance
There are various benefits of work-life balance and hence, all the organization is implementing this thing and at the same time, every busy professional is willing to undertake this balance in their life.
The employees will feel relaxed as all the stress in their life will be reduced thus, allowing them to be more productive in the organization. If they have set some target for themselves then they will achieve it because they will be committed to their work. If an employee isn’t happy with his personal life then he will be sitting in the office, physically, but he will be thinking about his personal life. In such situation, it is better that he stays back at home and solves his problem and then joins back the organization so that he can give a fresh start to his work (QueenslandGovernment 2012).
Work-life balance will benefit the organization as well and hence, the HR professionals are working hard to achieve it. Happy employees tend to stay with the organization for a longer period of time and hence, the organization can save the recruitment and training cost. An organization which gives flexible work timing will notice that there isn’t any attendance problem in the organization otherwise employees take an off as and when required by them. Unplanned leaves can hammer the workflow (QueenslandGovernment 2012).
Examples of work-life balance
Employers, today, are going out of their way to satisfy the workforce that they are having because they know that it is not worth hiring new people when old people are great.
Many organizations allow women to work from home. If a female employee is associated with an organization for years and then if delivers a baby then at this situation, may females decide to quit. An organization which wants to retain the valuable employee gives them the permission to work from home. This is one of the best things that employers can do to retain women workforce (Joseph).
If a manager notices that one of his subordinate is not happy with the things that are going around in the organization then the employee can opt for a change in the role. If a manager is too stressed with the responsibilities that he is handling then he can request his employer to change his role so that he can work in a more peaceful manner rather than of hating the work that he does (Joseph).
Team outings are something that every organization is doing today. When 10 people are working in a team then it is a must that they know each other in person so that they have a better coordination among themselves. Many organizations organize a team picnic or lunch so that the employees can go out and spend some quality time with their time members (Heathfield).
Many organizations allow the employee to work for 8 hours as per their convieneince. Many other organizations have gone a step ahead and they ask their employees to work for 40 hours in a week as per their convenience thus, allowing employees to work hard when the workload is more and allowing the employees to relax when there isn’t much work
