Career Plan of a hair dresser
Career Goal:
To be a well-known hair-dresser and to own a salon of my own. The starting step towards this goal would be becoming an apprentice in a salon.
- 1. Objectives:
At the end of my professional career, I want to be known as someone who added a new dimension to people’s personality by dressing their hair and made a positive difference in the organisations with which I was associated. This will need very hard work and I am willing to put forth the required efforts. ‘Making a Difference’ is the approach which I follow with lots of enthusiasm and positive attitude. But along with this to be a top-class hairdresser I know I need to have professional and new skills in the field so that I can progress with success in my career.
At present I am doing my Graduation from University. Once I accomplish the bachelor’s degree I would like to go back to my home. I already have a Diploma in Hairdressing and posses good skills related to hair dressing. But to gain a broad range of hairdressing areas and to know the nitty gritty of hairdressing business closely I would like to work for a salon as an apprentice. This will definitely help in building a strong base for knowledge and help in gaining experience too. Moreover I would be able to gain some specialised and practical knowledge about hairdressing and recent trends too (Nicholson, 2011). Achieving the short term goals in my career will help me in getting prepared for long-term career aspirations There are neither geographic nor salary constraints attached with achievement of short-term goals. Regardless of my pay package I am ready to relocate anywhere to gain knowledge and experience which is best for a successful hairdresser.
In the medium-term I would like to get a job with a reputed salon where there is job security but the challenges are bigger. By this time the career path would become more specific and achievement of my short-term goals will provide me a good combination of knowledge, skills and experience which will help me in moving ahead in career plan (Sisco, 2002).
My long-term goal is to establish a successful and exclusive Hair salon of my own; ideally I would prefer to end my career as a successful owner and a professional hairdresser who is well-known in the society. Knowing that I am a successful hairdresser with a salon of my own will give me a feeling of satisfaction and required wealth too by the time I am 50-60 years of age.

6. Fall Back Plan
If is am unable to get the job of manager in a well known salon to gain knowledge I would prefer to continue as apprentice to gain knowledge and in the due course I can complete my NVQ’s or take masters degree in cosmetology from a reputed institute like Manhattan Hairstyling Academy to gain more and better knowledge. Another option can be I can open a small time salon of my own by taking loan from bank after completing apprenticeship from salon and start teaching hairdressing (editor, 2011) .
7. Analysis
The primary career chosen by me is apprenticeship in salon this will help me in gaining experience and knowledge along with theoretical knowledge in the field of hairdressing. It needs lot of hard work as I will have to study hard at college for bachelor’s degree and work almost everyday with commitment at the salon too. The job of manager in a salon will require managerial skills clubbed with enhanced communication skills and well set skills of hairdressing too (Career Plan, n.d.).
To be a preeminent hairdresser I need to be confident, comfortable, team player and knowledgeable too. Moreover I should be able to analyse the implications of the steps taken by me in the salon I would be working for. To achieve the desired road to success my commitment to work hard and excel in the field of hairdressing will definitely take me to places. Additionally the learning sprit and constant improvement of skills in hairdressing will make me standout amongst the whole class of hairdressers (CAREER PLAN AND PROFESSIONAL PHILOSOPHY, n.d.).
8. Curriculum Plan
I already have a Diploma in hairdressing and I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree. In future I plan to take up and qualify the NVQ’s for hairdressing and then take up a Degree in the field of Cosmetology. Or take up another advanced course in Hairdressing along with continuous education through Professional Beauty Association (PBA) (Hairdressing Career Information: Becoming a Hairdresser, 2003).
9. Preferred Places of Work
I am ready to relocate anywhere and salary is not at all a constraint for me I would like to work for some of the best beauty salons as apprentice or as a manager all through my career (Chambers, 2005).
