Assignment for 2012
Instructions
• This assignment is due to be submitted by 5pm in Week 6 of the Semester on Monday
2
nd
April.  You therefore have a maximum of 3 weeks to complete this assignment.
• It is worth 25% of your final mark for this subject.  The assignment covers material up until
the end of week 4 (i.e., from Lecture 1 to Lecture 4).
• You do not need to do any analysis using SPSS.  Do not copy-and-paste any output tables
from SPSS either directly or by transcribing the output to your assignment in a different form.
• For any calculation, you need to show full workings; failure to do so will result in full marks
not being awarded, even if the final answer is correct.
•  You need to follow the instructions in the 2nd and 3rd Year Psychology Manual for how to
submit your assignment (remembering to date stamp the assignment as instructed).
• The following minor changes to those instructions apply:
– You do not have to give a word count, as it is not relevant here (the assignment is
considered equivalent to 1000 words)…but your assignment should not be
significantly larger than about 1000 words (excluding all numbers).
– Any non-standard  notation, especially anything using letters from the Greek
alphabet, can either be written by hand on the assignment, or it can spelt out as an
English word (see final page for English word equivalents).
• You are reminded of the University rules regarding copying and plagiarism.  Please refer to
2
nd
and 3
rd
Year Psychology Manual for details about what is permissible in doing an
assignment and about penalties for failure to comply with this requirement.
• Your lab class tutors and lecturer cannot provide any advice or comment about any aspect of
how to do the assignment, so please do not ask them.
• If you think that there is an error in any part of the assignment, then please contact me by
email
dudgeon@unimelb.edu.au and I will investigate it immediately and get back to you
ASAP.
• Please see the 2
nd
and 3
rd
Year Psychology Manual regarding procedures to request an
extension and the policy on how it operates.
• Penalties for late submission with no extension are also indicated in the Manual.
• Marks will be deducted for poorly presented work where the complete answer to any
question is not readily apparent to the person marking the assignment.
• In particular, please ensure that the answer to each question (and, possibly, parts of a
question) is clearly displayed and that the order of answers in the assignment corresponds to
the order of questions being asked in this document.

SOLUTION

Solution A:

a)

b) CHI- SQUARE TEST

c) ODDS= (probability (of event occuring))/(probability (of event non occuring))=(frequency of event occuring)/(frequency of event non occuring)

ODDS of giving desired explanation for children who are in comparison group
= 2/24

=0.0833

Workings:
The frequency of the occurrence of the event corresponds to the cell (2X1) in the contingency table with respect to the observed frequency.

The frequency of non occurrence of the event = total no. of events- frequency of occurrence of the event
=26-2 = 24

d) ODDS for children in micro genetic group giving desired explanation

=9/17

= 0.529

Workings:

The frequency of the occurrence of the event corresponds to the cell (1X1) in the contingency table with respect to the observed frequency.

The frequency of non occurrence of the event = total no. of events- frequency of occurrence of the event
=26-9 = 17

e) ODDS RATIO= (a X d)/(b X c)

a, b, c and d are the cell frequencies of a 2X2 contingency table

=  (9 X 10)/█(5X 2@)
=9
