Wellness Model
Wellness model of wellness refers to a type of model which would help the organization as well as the people working in the organization. The wellness model of wellness takes into consideration the six main dimensions mentioned below in the model.
The wellness model of wellness was developed by Dr. Bill Hettler, the founder of the National Wellness Institute (NWI). This model majorly takes into consideration the six supreme dimensions of wellness.
Physical Health
The first component which comes under the wellness model of wellness takes into consideration the health of the people who work in the organization. Physical health refers to the health which basically keeps in mind the body of the individual who serves the organization with the best of the ability. Physical wellness would follow the following two things such as:

During this time my constant stress came from the usual university deadlines and work related commitments, yet these were intensified by a series of stressful events which included a promotion to a supervisory role at work, moving into a new house and the news that a partner from a long distance relationship was planning an unexpected visit to Australia at the start of September. Whilst looking at these stressful events, I can actually acknowledge that they are all positive types of stress, however added to my already heightened stress levels I failed to see the positive aspects and let the stress get the better of me. The promotion at work meant that my working responsibilities increased through the commitment of more hours and greater accountability and pressure placed on me while at work. Moving house involved all of the expected causes of stress including packing and unpacking, and having to adjust to a new surroundings and an altered way of life. Finally, the overseas visitors meant that I had to make extra time in an already busy work and uni schedule to accommodate and entertain him during his visit, so whilst all three events initially excited me, this was quickly overshadowed by the added stresses that came with them.
Emotions at Workplace:
The emotional factor at work place would take into consideration various feelings, values or beliefs which might be recognized & accepted. Emotions at work place would take into consideration the degree at which one’s positive as well as enthusiastic feelings about one’s self. This would also include the capacity with which an individual would be able to manage others as well as one’s feelings. This would also help in order to see one’s drawbacks, limitations, etc in order to cope up with the stress in the most effective as well as efficient manner.
An individual with proper as well as balanced feelings would be able to respect & satisfy its relationships. Proper awareness & accepting a huge range of feelings would also help the individual in order to portray wellness. With balanced emotions at work place, one would be able to achieve personal choices, decisions which would be majorly based upon the feelings, behavior, values, trust, respect, commitment, etc. This would also help in order to accept various types of challenges, risks, recognize the conflicts which might come across as well as deal with them in the most effective manner.
The emotional dimension at workplace would take in to consideration the following aspects such as:

In relation to this dimension of the wellness model of wellness, it would be believed that, emotions play one of the most important roles in order to carry out work from the employees. The workers on the store are expected to be energetic & treat all the customers visiting the store with a smile rather than a frown on their forehead. Their main purpose would be to walk all over the place & see whether everything would be in place or not. If the employee on store does not carry a smile on its face, the manager makes it a point that, he/she would be reminded as to why the store manager has been appointed at the store. One has to study the career path in this case. If the workplace has a cordial environment all around, it would help the employee as well as the organization in order to succeed in the years to some. One must remember that, emotions play quite an important role to showcase their feelings, respect, values, etc.
Health Promotion
The occupational dimension recognizes personal satisfaction and enrichment in one’s life through work. At the center of occupational wellness is the premise that occupational development is related to one’s attitude about one’s work. Traveling a path toward your occupational wellness, you’ll contribute your unique gifts, skills, and talents to work that is both personally meaningful and rewarding. You’ll convey your values through your involvement in activities that are gratifying for you. The choice of profession, job satisfaction, career ambitions, and personal performance are all important components of your path’s terrain. Occupational wellness follows these tenets:– It is better to choose a career which is consistent with our personal values interests and beliefs than to select one that is unrewarding to us.
– It is better to develop functional, transferable skills through structured involvement opportunities than to remain inactive and uninvolved.
Health promotion has been defined by the World Health Organization’s 2005 Bangkok Charter for Health Promotion in a Globalized World as “the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health”.[1] The primary means of health promotion occur through developing healthy public policy that addresses the prerequisites of health such as income, housing, food security, employment, and quality working conditions. There is a tendency among public health officials and governments—and this is especially the case in liberal nations such as Canada and the USA—to reduce health promotion to health education and social marketing focused on changing behavioral risk factors.[2]
Recent work in the UK (Delphi consultation exercise due to be published late 2009 by Royal Society of Public Health and the National Social Marketing Centre) on relationship between health promotion and social marketing has highlighted and reinforce the potential integrative nature of the approaches. While an independent review (NCC ‘It’s Our Health!’ 2006) identified that some social marketing has in past adopted a narrow or limited approach, the UK has increasingly taken a lead in the discussion and developed a much more integrative and strategic approach (see Strategic Social Marketing in ‘Social Marketing and Public Health’ 2009 Oxford Press) which adopts a whole-system and holistic approach, integrating the learning from effective health promotion approaches with relevant learning from social marketing and other disciplines. A key finding from the Delphi consultation was the need to avoid unnecessary and arbitrary ‘methods wars’ and instead focus on the issue of ‘utility’ and harnessing the potential of learning from multiple disciplines and sources. Such an approach is arguably how health promotion has developed over the years pulling in learning from different sectors and disciplines to enhance and develop.
This was one of the latter elements that was covered in the course work material and for me it really seemed encapsulate just how organisations can use their position to implement wellness initiatives that extend beyond simply the hours their employees are at work into an application that can be used in their everyday lives. Although physical health is only one component of what makes up a state of wellbeing, I firmly believe that all the suggested elements that are said to promote wellbeing such as emotional, social and environmental health are all interrelated with one another, therefore an improvement in physical health will yield a positive improvement on all other areas of an individuals wellbeing (Eckersley, 2006). What I am trying to say here is that we all care greatly about our own physical health, therefore if people feel physically well then there is a greater likelihood that they will be able to handle the other issues in their life in a more proactive and positive way, directing them towards a greater sense of overall wellbeing.
I had a vested interest in this subject as I studied the ‘The Ottawa Charter” for health promotion in relation to public health extensively in a year twelve Health and Human Development subject, and was therefore highly interested to see how it could be adapted to a workplace context. With so much of our adult lives spent at work, and much of greater lives shaped by the environment that we work within (Noblet & Murphy, 1995), I believe that the workplace is the ideal setting to inform and educate people on how to take control of their own health. If such initiatives are undertaken correctly then they should both yield greater health of those within the organisation and in turn filter through onto the greater health of society as a whole.
However, after reviewing the reading materials and lecture examples given, it seems to me to be apparent that such health promotion initiatives have to date been considered and applied in more modern, white collar business environments. While these are still highly important and such programs should continue to be developed and implemented throughout the business world, I would like explore how a health promotion initiative such as the “Ottawa Charter” could perhaps be used in a blue collar working environment. This idea came to me as for some time now construction works have been occurring near my house employing several building and construction workers. While I don’t want to stereo-type these workers by any means, I have generally made the following observations on their daily rituals;
• They work with little or no safety equipment
• Consume 2 litre bottles of soft drink constantly
• Do not wear protective sunglasses or hats in sunny conditions
• Lunch hour generally involves either McDonald or a pie and chips
• Snack involve bags of chips and chocolate bars (not an apple in sight);
• And every day a mountain of cigarette butts is left where their vehicles were parked
Therefore it has occurred to me that if these workers live like this for five or six days a week for the majority of their working life then this must undoubtedly have some negative effect on their health. From some further research I found that blue collar workers generally have a lower level of education than white collar workers (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006b), have a higher incidence of smoking (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006a) and suffer generally suffer from more physical complaints than their white collared counterparts (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006c). Thus, to me it seems critical that health promotion initiatives are considered in the context of more traditional trades and labour industries as well as contemporary business organisations.
So how might one address the concept of health promotion onto a typical male based construction company? I defiantly don’t think it is as clear to understand as it might be in an office based environment, but I do think some measures can definitely be adopted to ensure that the health of these employees is not overlooked. Here are some suggestions I would make based on the “Ottawa Charter” framework (Noblet et al, 1995)
1. Build healthy public policy: develop and implement policies that acknowledge that workers are valued by the business, and the business cares about workers health and wellbeing.2. Create supportive environments: could involve offering free voluntary health checks such in working hours such as mole screens and blood pressure testing to create an environment where workers personal health is seen as a priority both for themselves and the business.
3. Reorient health services: management looks for problems in their workforce and individuals before they actually arise. For construction workers could be providing sunscreen and hats on sunny days to prevent skin cancers, or free water facilities to encourage less consumption of soft drinks.
4. Strengthening community action: traditionally blue collar industries don’t have the participatory decision making processes or feedback mechanisms of white collar industries, therefore it’s important to set up secure forums where supervisors and workers can voice their concerns and managers in turn can learn what health concerns workers would like addressed.
5. Develop personal skills: the most important element is to educate workers to give them greater control over their own health, particularly blue collar workers with limited education levels who may make poorer health choices out of ignorance to better choices, therefore educating them further on the benefits of healthy lifestyle practices will give them the control to make better choices in the future. For example education on better nutrition choices could encourage them to choose a sandwich for lunch over a pie.
While this outline is definitely not extensive, it does show some simple ways that business can help promote the health of its blue collar staff. In saying this though I don’t believe that promoting the health of employees should only be left up to the owners and managers of business, because despite how ideal that might seem, many operations have neither the resources nor knowledge to initiate such programs. Therefore, if our government is sincere about programs for public health like the “Ottawa Charter”, then I feel that they need to become action orientated towards putting their policies into action. This could be achieved by working with businesses and using the workplace as a channel to target Australian health concerns, which might promote improvements in both individual employee health and have a filter effect onto greater societal health as well.
Spiritual Health
The last dimension of the wellness model of wellness takes into consideration the Spiritual Health. This majorly takes into consideration the way people take or define their life. This aspect of the model keeps in mind the various positive developments or aspects, roles, responsibilities, ethics, values, etc. Being in full spirit spiritually, would help in order to showcase love, care, affection as well as showcase some care or love for others.
Some of the characteristics which should be taken into consideration in case of Spiritual Health could be as under:

This dimension majorly takes into consideration the basic meaning or the purpose how an individual defines his/her life. This dimension would also include an appreciation as to how to use the life as well as expand the forces of nature which exists in the nature. This would be done majorly by an integration of the internal such as personal feelings, emotions clubbed along with certain external feelings such as fear, joy, despair, disappointment, doubt, dislocation, etc. These refer to certain important as well as crucial components which would help in order to search & display the entire value system which would adapt the meaning of your existence in life. This would defiantly help the individual in order to see that he/she is becoming spiritually quite strong.
