Shoplifting is explained as a stealing of products from the retail outlets. Due to the changing in the economy and society shoplifting crime has become one of the regular crimes, which is a deal by the police. Retailers often report that shoplifting affects the bottom line and more or less 0.6% of the overall inventory disappears that is owed by the shoplifting (Sennewald 2000). There are two types of shoplifting categories, which are: Professional shoplifters, these people usually steal expensive items such as, jewelry and clothing, which they can easily resale, and the other category is of Amateur shoplifters, these shoplifters usually comes in a group, these people do not come with an intension of steal but simply see an opportunity to take away the items.

In 2001, retailers claimed that due to the shoplifting, United States retailers have cost $25 million per day and due to that U.S court consider shoplifting as a theft or a prosecution. In United States, the situation is that store manages and employees are given few powers of arrest. The court has provided store officials with a power to arrest and scrutinize the person who was trapped in shoplifting. As per the California Penal Code Section 490.5(f) (1) permits an employee to detail the accused shoplifter for a specific period of time (Cupchik and Atcheson 1983). It is true but it is also sad that sincere and hard working people are the one who has to pay a price for fraudulence. Due to shoplifters, other individuals cost the autonomy of looking at stores at their own leisure without the salesperson watching every move of the customer. Due to shoplifting retailers has to go a long way and put their efforts to end to the five finger discount shopper that has no intension of purchasing. Due to few people, honest customers have to pay the price for classy obsession that also affects the society.

Shoplifting cases has been seen from every age, race, sex, social and economic background group of people. According to the report generated by National Crime Prevention Council, approximately 25% of the people were caught while they were doing shoplifting crime, the report has mentioned that these people were between the age group of 13 to 17, and when these criminals were asked why they were doing such criminal activity there answers was very shocking, they said they did this crime, because they were bored and has nothing to do. Other criminals accused that they have peer pressure to shoplift the classy items in order to compete with their peers and wear the latest fashion clothes and accessories in order to make their standard in the society.

Many people believes that people who are involved in shoplifting crimes have some kind of mental disorder, but the truth is that not all people steal for the same reasons. Very few people have the problem of kleptomania, which is a compulsive urge to steal, and many people steal for the sake of money. It has been analyzed from the Independent retail studies that due to shoplifting retail outlets cost American public to an average of 33.21 billion per year. According to the report of State University of New York, in 2001, 14% shoplifting of theft offences came in front of the police. (Horan 1996).

From the various criminology theories, Theory of Strain could be applied in shoplifting crime. Strain theory explains that a crime occurs due to the result of frustration and angers that increase the sprain of not achieving the desired goals and that increases the tension that causes crime by an individual (Agnew 1992). Strain Theory has been tested by many researchers on a large range of population and over much criminal and equivalent behavior of people. Strain theory can be easily applicable on both the cases related to street crimes and cases related to white collar crimes. Due to lack of integration among the goals of the society and what realistically permitted by the society causes less dominant or lower class to suffer, which results in illegitimate ways of achieving the goals, from here the crime starts prevailing in the society.

According to theory of strain, crimes usually occur due to the result of low opportunity and low aspirations, which create a gap between what an individual needs and what they actually get from the society. The Division of Labor in Society, written by Emile Durkheim also explains about the term “anomie” that means a state in which societal and moral norms are absent. Shoplifting is also the result of abnormal behavior of a person (Aseltine, Susan and Jennifer 2000). These types of crime occur in those societies that are going through massive organizational restructuring because they have chances to lose track of moral. Social inequality is also another factor that leads to unusual behavior, when there is inequality in the society, some people gets all the benefits, and some are deprive of it, this results into the anxiety, which leads an occurrence of crime, shoplifting is one such crime that also occur due to the prevailing inequality conditions in the society. Strain theory explains that shoplifting crime occurs due to innovators in which lower class people who want to live high class life. In order to achieve their goals people usually get drawn in crimes such as, theft, fraud or shoplifting acts.
