A brief Statement of the Work
The work does a brief analysis of the infrastructure, resource utilization and the cost estimates of the possible design of a Gym for the staffs and students of Queensland University of Technology. QUT does not have a legitimate Gym to satisfy the fitness requirements of the students. The inmates of the university, strongly feel the presence of a Gym would be helpful in improving their fitness, supplement to the living standards of the campus and produce an environment friendly and above all, the social contacts. (http://www.greengym.ca/ParkPlanner.html,2012)We have taken an overview of the possible design and planning of the infrastructure of the Gym. We took the help of various online materials and the inputs from the staffs and the students in the campus fro the purpose.
Description of the Project Scope
The Gym in the campus is to bring a healthy living culture and improve the social contacts and a sense of cooperation among the inmates. Besides social, economic and the environmental benefits from the gym, QUT would be able to raise some revenue from the users of the facility. The people, who participated in the investigation, believe that the Gardens Point campus to be the best location in order to set-up a gym. There are many things in favor of the location:
- The Brisbane River is located on one side to the garden point campus and the Botanic garden on the other, thus from the point of view of environment it is a good location for the purpose.
- The civic amenities like transportation, accommodation, the dinning places and the shopping centers are in walking distance from the place.
Thus, it makes a good sense to have a gym in such a location which has health benefits and is near to the basic requirements of living. The air inside the gym gets polluted because of the sweating, gasping, deep breaths and other physical work outs of the people. Thus it becomes it becomes important the gym is located in a clean environment from where fresh air can be pulled to the gym.
Structure of the project
There can be many ways in which the given project can be shaped. The most important among them are the needs of the staffs and the students of the university. The budget allocated to the project is another important constraint which would play a role in feasibility of the plans and the resources to be utilized. The time and the space available are the other but important part of the analysis and the development of the gym.
The Resource utilization
There are various resources associated to develop the infrastructure needs for the gym.
- The foremost requirement is the campus space and the location of the gym. The estimate of the floor area for the gym should be carefully planned in regards with the strength of the campus and the people interested in gym. The floor space of the gym could have been used for some other purpose also and hence should be seriously utilized(CRICOSS 2012).
- The building of the gym which is another important part of the development would require the materials of construction, the planning and designing architects and engineers. Then there would the workers who would actually work in the development of the building. The decisions like the number of rooms, shower-rooms, room for the aerobics and yoga, the swimming pools all form important steps in designing the infrastructure of the gym.
- The various instruments of the fitness have also to be planned. Some of the devices might be more required than the others. The inputs from the inmates of the campus are also important in deciding the resources.(TIGNES,2011)
Time for the project requirements
The time of the project rollout form an important constraint .As we have discussed the different phases for the project, we give a brief overview of the same:
- Requirement analysis of the QUT inmates and the drawing of the design from 1st April 2012 to 1st of May 2012.
- Getting feedbacks from the inmate and the negotiations with the construction companies to get the best in a price from 2nd May 2012 to 1st July 2012.
- Construction phase from 2nd July 2012 to February2013.
- Handover period from 2nd February 2013 to 1st April 2013, when it would be necessary to check the requirements which were delivered.
Cost Estimate
- This is the most important step in which the project. As it has been pointed out earlier also, that five million has been estimated, to be the total cost of the project. There are different areas and the resources on which the budget shall be spent. The cost of construction would include the large share of the budget.( http://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/
,2012) The construction cost should include the cost of the building material, labor compensation of the workers and engineers, who work on the project. As the time period of construction 8 months, so it would include the cost per man-day for the length of the period. Then there is the cost of the hardware for the gym. The development of facilities like the swimming pools, recreation centers, and the monitoring systems for administration all should be carefully estimated in the budget plan. There is also a hidden cost of the space of the campus utilized in the project, but it is not included in the budget plan of the gym.
Time phased budget of the Proposal
The time phases of the development of the gym and the requirement gathering has been enlisted in the above sections. From the cost estimates, it is not difficult to analyze that the first two phases do not have any serious expenditures. They can be volunteered by the students and the staffs of the university. The construction phase makes the most use of the budget. Initially the construction material would have to be acquired; the workers and the engineers can be hired from the same construction company or can be called on contracts. The hardware of the gym would have to be acquired next. The facilities like the monitoring systems and the flooring materials would have to be purchased next.
