The other day i.e. 4th August, 2012 I was out with my friend John, we decided to go out for a ride on his car. We were having little bit of chat & we switched on the radio. According to the radio channel, we both got to know the achievement that, New Zealand medals tally at the London Olympics was increased by a bronze medal warned by Storm Uru & Peter Taylor.
After hearing the news, we thought of dropping the idea of going for a drive & catch another friend of ours Michael. I & John were so excited to hear this news that, we started to flip the radio channels to gather some more information regarding the same. We could not wait to reach Michael’s home & called him up to inform regarding the same. Michael too was super duper excited and kept on waiting for us to reach at his place so that we could sit together & watch the repeat telecast (Brown, 2012).
Once I & John reached Michael’s place, we switched on the television along with the videos over the net as we didn’t want to miss out any of the innings. The D-Day i.e. 4th August, 2012 has provided a large proportion of the medals at the London Olympics. On this day, the medal tally for New Zealand rose to six in number by grabbing three Gold & two bronzes. Majority of the people who came to watch the event at the London Olympics were a little disappointed with Andrea Hewitt (one of the favorites amongst the women’s triathlon) as she was unable to grab up a medal & add into the medal tally (Brown, 2012). She finished sixth & was unable to cope with the last 10 km and failed to earn a victory. The other two swimmers who missed a medal were Kate Mcllroy & Nicky Samuels. Both the players had a difficult swim which landed them up at the 35th position. The sources displayed over the web and the news over the television portrayed that, Hewitt was about to complete the entire run but dropped off in the end. She said that, though it had to be a perfect day for her but things didn’t turn up the way they used to. She acclaimed, once she was half way thru she didn’t have the legs to perform further. She ended up saying that, “today was the day for her”.
The next in line were Uru & Taylor who had plenty of medals under their name but it was not enough to beat the Danish crew who backed up a gold medal & is known as a world champion. After two disappointments, it was an event of happiness for all the viewers as Emma Twigg finished fifth in the women’s single sculls by defending as well as dominating the Olympic champion Mirka Knapkova of The Republic in the final race.
One after the another, the viewers got an opportunity to feel happy & celebrate the moment. Or it should be said that, the players were all geared up to get their national anthem being heard. It was confirmed that, with a strong start of the men’s omnium after setting the record of the fastest time in the 250m flying gold was waiting to be added within the medals tally. After this event, Sailors Jo Aleh & Olivia Powrie confirmed their billing of gold by beating the contenders with a strong start in the women’s 470 competition (Brown, 2012). After the women’s being greeted with a gold, the men’s leader lost in the first race but maintained a certain pace to grab a bronze in the finals. The discussions over the Olympics were worth missing a long drive with John.
Day 2: Pacific Debate over Same Sex Marriage
On 15/8/2012 i.e. yesterday I was returning back home with my friend Samantha from our coaching classes. The weather was nice and we decided to stop at a coffee shop. It had been a busy day for us, as since morning we had been busy with our studies and were apprehensive about the test and the quizzes at school (Auckland Now, 2012). So, we decided to have a casual evening just to lighten up our minds. I asked Samantha to switch on the laptop so that we just go through the happenings at the social networking and have a little chat about it, while we waited for our coffee. While having the gossip session through the coffee and the face book, we just ran through the main headlines and an important event caught our eye. It was about the same-sex marriage, and it was an interesting topic for Samantha as she had told me that one of her cousin’s was in same-sex relationship. That’s how we started to discuss about the same, and the news was headed ‘Pacific debate over same-sex marriage’. It was earlier brought out that the MP of the South of the Auckland was against the same-sex relationships in the country and had criticised such relationships to be morally disapproving and it was violating the traditional set up in the country. But the news ws in support of these people who are a little different and want to engage in gthe same sex relationship (Auckland Now, 2012). It was a little astonishing for me because I have so far not really thought about such relationships but I was in fact happy for Samantha’s cousin. The news talked about Auckland’s Pacific community and their discussion about the same-sex relationships in the country. Labour’s Mangere MP Su’u William Sio in the former week condemned the Marriage Equity Bill, referring to the ubiquitous disagreement within his body of voters, which has the uppermost population of Pacific Islanders in New Zealand. According to Sio, the scenario in the Pacific Churches was such that they were preaching the general public against the bill that was to be discussed upon. Thus a major part of the Pacific community remained away from the idea of promoting the same-sex relationships in the country. On the other hand the Pacific Peoples Advisory Panel, is sensitive to such relationships and is aiming to organise the meetings so that they can give the fair chance to the community leaders and the public so that they can engage ‘respectfully and sensitively’ to present their views on the bill. I believed that the step that is taken by Uesifili Unasa, the chairman of the panel is morally and socially a righteous decision on his part. As, Unasa also cleared his position on the behalf of the whole panel that bill is free from any intention to harm the pure institution of marriage or the traditional values that the Pacific people possess (Auckland Now, 2012). In fact the person made it very clear that the bill only advocates the basic human rights, and this bill specifically promotes the fundamental rights and the that the panel respects the choice of ever common New Zealander. They advocate that the people of New Zealand have the right to exercise their opinion and the choice and thus they are completely free to be in any loving relationship, and each should be considered an honourable relationship. Thus, a same-sex relationship is legal and as formal as the other heterosexual relationships. It was a happy news for Samantha and me and more importantly for her cousin who had been treated unequally and was biased through a considerable time span. We both as the citizens of the same country believed that the Bill is a right step forward in bringing out the true stories of these people who were as yet marginalised, and how many New Zealanders and the Pacific Community were seen as the Second class citizens among the other members of the society (Auckland Now, 2012). The bill’s sponsor, Labour Mp Louisa wall, will speak at the meeting along with New Zealand First Party MP Leaufaamulia Asenati Lole-Taylor and Labour Mp Charles Chauvel to further propaogate the right step. Samantha and me boith second the opinion that Unasa holds towards Sio, who according to us has only caused misunderstanding and a sense of fear among the churches and the local communities. And, according to the sponsors the laws which discriminate against the people on such unfairly basis ought to have no valid place in New-Zealand and they shall be challenged. This coffee treat shall be long remembered as it brought the happy news for me and my friend (Auckland Now, 2012).
Day 3: Are you confused about sun safety messages?
Today in the afternoon I was taking a walk with my uncle through the garden area and I had an enlightening talk with him. Being a doctor uncle is so particular about each cosmetic that me and my sister use and that what could be their benefits and the side-effects. It was sunny outside and so I applied my sister’s sun block cream on my arms and face. Uncle might have noticed that the greasiness on my skin and that is how he got to know about the astonishing facts related to the skin safety products that we use (Nzherald.co.nz, 2012). He told that sunlight gives us natural Vitamin D and the sun screens just keep away that from the body. In fact many Cancer Organizations have brought that the deficiency of the Vitamin can create a whole lot of problems related to skin. Uncle brought the fact that applying such creams and other sun blocking cosmetics can highly damage our skin and leave the rashes and the scales on the skin. Also, that there are some nano-particles which are there in the products and thus can create other risks to the health if the natural warmth or the heat of the sun is blocked away. In fact the society has gone anti-sunshine over the years and many million dollars have been spent on the sun protection and also the application of it. I also got reminded of the times when there was the tingling sensations that I found on my body and also that my sister had also complained of the same. In fact there had been some sleepless nights that had been caused due to the problems related to skin (Nzherald.co.nz, 2012).
After having an in-depth discussion with my Uncle, I got to know the realities behind sun safety messages. I was astonished & at the same time I was also apprehensive to tell it to my sister. My sister is too protective about her skin & applies sun screen while stepping out. The moment I was back from my uncle’s place, I rushed in to her room and started discussing the same. I told her about the major health issues which might arise while using the same. Some of the diseases which could arise were Cancer, Alzheimer & major issues with heart as well. Excessive use of the sun screen leads to lack of Vitamin – D which has led to death from the illness which directly associated with lack of Vitamin D. But, on the contrary my sister told me that she read the same in a newspaper article (Nzherald.co.nz, 2012).
