Today we will be discussing about ways to improve mental health by developing healthy habits including healthy sleep, self-care methods and activities related to it. In today’s discussion about improving mental health, we will be discussing about healthy habits, healthy sleep, self-care, activity related mental health.

Healthy habits relate to various factors collective of behaviours focused on improving the overall well-being of people. Overall well-being includes improving physical, social and mental being by adopting healthy habits. According to Chávez et al. (2023), a balanced diet, healthy sleep and physical exercise improve quality of life and reduce the factors associated with risk of mortality. Adopting healthy habits of healthy dietary patterns and improved sleep can also help prevent non-communicable diseases of hypertension, cancer, diabetes and obesity.
Moving on to next we will discuss what healthy behaviours need to be implemented in daily lifestyle to develop healthy lifestyle and better mental well-being.

Adoption of healthy habits helps manage stress which improves the overall well-being and quality of life of an individual. Healthy behaviours include influencing daily lifestyle by increasing physical activity, eliminating substance abuse, preventing usage of tobacco, enhancing the quality of sleep, and adopting healthy dietary patterns for a balanced diet (Chávez et al., 2023). These healthy behaviours are able to improve the mental health of an individual amidst the geographical location, culture and other Sociodemographic Variables. The stated factors develop a positive effect on mental well-being in an individual which improves the quality of life as well.

According to the National Institutes of Health (2022), emotional well-being affects mental and overall physical well-being. Emotional well-being can be improved by developing healthy habits which might include building resilience with others within the community, reducing stress by practicing relaxation exercises, and getting quality of sleep which improves the cognitive functioning of the brain. Social connection and emotional connection with society also influence emotional and mental well-being (National Institutes of Health, 2022). As per Baz et al. (2023), the above-stated factors help improve mental well-being which helps cope with anxiety, stress and depression.

Health education about mental health issues, personal characteristics, and lifestyle choices are associated with psychiatric disorders can help reduce the stigma associated with the prevalence of the issue. Mental health concerns can be due to a lack of resources about services and awareness about improved lifestyle changes (Shim, Eaker and Park, 2022). Comprehensive health education can influence awareness and help overcome the perceived stigma. The impact of mental health education can promote lifestyle change which encourages the development of healthy habits and combat mental health concerns. Therefore, improved health education can help healthy habits which can help improve overall mental and physical well-being.

Primary healthcare can help overcome health inequalities improving the mental health condition of the people of the particular sociodemographic region. Primary Psychological and pharmacological treatment can help promote rehabilitation, empowering mental health. This results in awareness and development of positive sociological relationships, promoting a healthy lifestyle (Wasserman, 2023).
Sleep hygiene, balanced nutritional regimen and work environments influence mental health conditions. The stated factors can be regulated by developing an active lifestyle, improved health setting and a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy eating habits affect the development and management of mental health. Healthy eating habits can result in improved psychiatry and psychological outcomes. Precise nutrition can help in public health benefits for the treatment and prevention of health risk factors. According to Fismen et al. (2024), consumption of ultra-processed food is associated with depression and anxiety, stress, and sleep dissatisfaction among children and adolescents. Skipping breakfast can increase stress, psychological distress, depression and anxiety.

Physical activity can prevent a wide range of chronic illnesses and premature mortality, affecting mental health. Physical activity such as exercise, and breathing exercises can prevent medical conditions of cardiovascular disease and other non-communicable diseases, colon cancer, and osteoporosis improving lifestyle behaviours (Mahindru, Patil and Agrawal, 2023). Physical activity can improve self-esteem, cognitive function, mood, and depression, which can improve the overall quality of life. Therefore, physical activity can improve the mental health of an individual as a result of improved attention, focus, memory, cognition, and decision-making due to improved cortisol levels.

A balanced meal helps provide the Nutrition required for the development of improved cognitive-behavioural behaviour, reduced oxidative stress, reduced inflammation of the nervous system and improved metabolic transformation (Grajek et al., 2022). Proper nutrition can help regulate the expression of neuromodulators and neurotransmitters, which influence cortisol levels. According to Grajek et al. (2022), nutrients level affects gamma-aminobutyric acid, butyric acid, serotonin, and dopamine, which affect the nervous system. Cortisol levels are associated with improving the immune system of an individual and the proper functioning of cognition and the gastrointestinal mucosal immune system.

Relaxation exercises, including meditation and breathing exercises, help the neuroscience system of an individual brain to develop environmental consciousness which can improve the cognitive rain function (Jamil et al., 2023). Physical activity such as meditation and yoga can improve and increase immunological levels. Breathing exercises help improve physical health conditions, including, systolic blood pressure, hypertension, diabetes and even autonomic diseases. This is activated by brain-education-based meditation. Thus, meditative practices help in mindfulness, strengthening the physiology of the body including the immune system and genetics.

Breathing exercises effectively reduce Anxiety and stress as a result of removing involuntary diaphragmatic obstruction. Breathing exercise can reduce the clinical threshold of various clinician manifestations of anxiety and chronic stress that can impact physical, mental, and cognitive health (Bentley et al., 2023). According to Bentley et al. (2023), the increased risk of cardiometabolic disorders, cancer, mental illness, and neurodegenerative disease, can be reduced by lowering mortality by continuously evolving in breathing exercises. Stress and anxiety are common reasons for mental illness. Thus involving in breathing exercises can help improve the overall physical health of an individual.

Sleep is associated with maintaining and improving physical and mental health. Various biological functions are affected by sleeping disorders. Quality sleep is a healthy habit used to improve cardiovascular health, mental health, cognition, immunity, reproductive health, and hormone regulation (Baranwal, Yu and Siegel, 2023). Improper sleep can cause insomnia, sleep apnoea, and cardiac disorder, as a result of lifestyle behaviour. Therefore, healthy habits of lifestyle behaviour must be adopted to improve the quality of sleep. Quality of sleep can improve mental and overall well-being by affecting above stated factors.

Improper sleep due to unhealthy lifestyle behaviour causes mental and physical distress. This can cause Insomnia, Depression, OCD, PTSD and psychosis. According to Scott et al. (2021), the quality of sleep has an impact on daily life, affecting general mood, and stress. Improper sleep can cause Post-traumatic stress disorder, suicidal ideation, and psychological burnout. Possible moderators of improved sleep in relation to mental health could be the identification of several key moderators improving mental health and lowering risks associated with it. Therefore, sleep directly affects quality of life and lifestyle behaviour.

Good sleep hygiene practices can reduce associated symptoms of insomnia and depression. Inconsistent sleep schedules and behaviours encourage poor sleep hygiene, resulting in poor mental health conditions. According to Alanazi et al. (2023), improper sleep can cause neuropsychiatric diseases that can increase the risk of harm or accidents as well as it reduce overall productivity. Worsening sleep hygiene in an individual may predispose the condition to psychiatric disorders such as depression. This is caused by increased inflammation of cytokine levels in the body due to poor sleep. Thus, a proper sleep hygiene must be maintained to prevent psychiatric disorders and improve overall well-being.

According to Suresh, Alam and Karkossa (2021), peer support can demonstrate enhanced mental health care by the support and care of peers. Professional mental health services can help adopt healthy behaviour which can improve the mental health status of an individual. Peer support can improve mental health support demonstrating a a positive effect on overall well-being (Shalaby and Agyapong, 2020). This improves the quality of life, self-confidence, and engagement and reduces the burden on the healthcare system. Thus peer support can improve support and engagement by adapting the social status of mental health services.

Healthy lifestyles can affect the mental and physical health of an individual, affecting the overall well-being of an individual. A healthy lifestyle directly affects the physical, social and emotional development of an individual (Maximova et al., 2021). Improved lifestyle recommendations according to socioeconomic conditions can improve the physical and mental health conditions of an individual. Maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviours by intervention of eating healthy, sleeping on time and maintaining physical health are the perceived changes required to improve mental and physical health. It can affect the social determinant of health as well.

Self-care is known to be a critical element in healthcare that determines the physical, spiritual, and mental factors and well-being of a person. This type of approach includes the active engagement of the patient with association to the healthcare professionals thereby facilitating holistic care. According to the discussion of the World Health Organization (2024), self-care is determined by the ability of the individual patient, community and respective family members to promote healthcare activities, maintain a better quality of health, effectively prevent diseases and cope with disabilities along with any potential illness without much contribution of the healthcare professionals or other care providers.

Intervention for self-care may include the factors of empowering individuals along with the respective communities for managing well-being and health outcomes, strengthening the national institution for effective implementation of domestic resources along enhancement of the “primary healthcare” (PHC). As mentioned by the discussion of the National Institute of Mental Health (2024), some of the appropriate strategies that can highlight the elements of self-care may include getting regular physical exercise, maintaining healthy eating habits, relaxing activities, maintaining better sleep cycles and maintaining positive thoughts for a good state of mind. Self-care is also known for a high level of resilience in patients along with their family members.

There is a significant relation between self-care and self-efficacy as self-efficacy can be determined to have a critical contribution to enhancing motivation along with empowerment. According to the study by Tan et al. (2021), the self-care approach in complex conditions, like hypertension, can facilitate the patient with the elements for adhering to the plan of treatment, managing medications, regular physical activities and maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviours. In addition, one of the reports by Peyman et al. (2020) mentioned that self-care management withholds actions from the perspective of the patient for interpreting and recognizing the symptoms and signs of their health situation, followed by its management.

Incorporating the approach of self-care in a condition of critical health can facilitate improvement in health outcomes. In support of that, a study by Sivakumar and Susila (2021) mentioned that the behaviour of self-care can be considered as a program of psycho-education that aims to enhance the abilities of a patient to carry out management activities on their own and understand the potential complications associated with their health conditions. On the other hand, a study by Lee et al. (2022) mentioned that the implementation of self-care can significantly reduce any requirement for emergency hospitalization and care, lowering the rate of mortality along with morbidity and enhancing the overall quality of life for patients suffering from chronic health conditions.

Self-care is evident in enhancing mental stability among most patients thereby preventing potential deterioration that might result in the development of conditions like stress, depression and anxiety. In addition to that, one of the studies conducted by Kwon (2023), has mentioned that the practices in association with self-care can involve getting appropriate rest, having time for reflection on own self, inspiration and seeking therapy from professionals like meditation. This approach significantly mitigates any potential risk of dependence on others as they might develop the feeling of burden on their family members. During the self-care approach, the patient learns many skills for taking charge of their own health state.

(2022), has mentioned that the self-care approach also involves the appropriate desire and attitude for the patient to safeguard themselves thereby can be considered as a sustainable behaviour for acquiring better health outcomes. Another relevant article by Riegel et al. (2024), supports that, the intervention for self-care majorly focuses on the change of behaviour in a person by enhancing their skills and efficacy by assessing appropriate problems and setting goals thereby acquiring better results. Hence it could be inferred that the self-care strategies are associated with tailored and patient-centric care.

However, there are multiple barriers to self-care in a healthcare setting that might include a lack of professional guidance, social isolation and a significant understanding of the medical regimen (Barber et al. 2025). In addition to that, the approach of self-care can put pressure on the family members along with the patients to take accountability for actions and outcomes having an influence on their health condition. According to a study conducted by Sun et al. (2021), some other elements that might hinder the effective strategy of self-care may include communication, literacy and language thereby affecting the aspect of navigating the appropriate healthcare system along with services.

Mental health is considered to be an effective state for well-being of the cognitive functioning that incorporates the elements like psychological, social, emotional as well as physical factors. According to the discussion of the World Health Organization (2022), mental health is a crucial element of health that allows the associated person to make appropriate decisions and cope with stress thereby becoming a significant human right, responsible for community, socio-economic and personal development. There are multiple activities in association with mental health thereby promoting a better quality of life and may include meditation, engaging in talking therapies, communication, relaxation techniques and maintaining a better sleep cycle along with regular exercises.

(2023), mentions that the factor of sleep can significantly promote learning and memory consolidation, subsequently allowing for restoration and recovery of the body. The patient acquiring poor sleep can develop symptoms of depression and anxiety in association with excessive thinking (Mou et al. 2023). Hence, it could be inferred that deficiency in sleep can influence the ability to learn, focus and concentrate thereby causing problems in making appropriate decisions, managing behaviour and emotional factors, solving problems and also suffering from difficulty in remembering things. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (2022), good sleeping quality can maintain the balance of hormones like leptin and ghrelin.

People, who exercise regularly are determined to have better emotional and mental well-being thereby reducing potential mental illness. In support of that, Better Health Channel (2021) have mentioned that exercise significantly boosts concentration and mood along with focus, resulting in improvement of mental health. A study conducted by Mahindru et al. (2023) mentioned that physical exercise can enhance the functioning of the “hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal” (HPA) axis in association with the reduction of relevant cortisol levels thereby ensuring the restoration of the balance of both ghrelins along leptin. Physical exercise can result in the brain producing “endogenous opioid peptides” that significantly elevate mood and reduce depressive symptoms.

There are many therapies that help to maintain better mental health stability and engage the participants in appropriate activities thereby enhancing their cognitive, behavioral and social skills. One such therapy may include “cognitive behavioural therapy” (CBT) which helps to change the perspective of the patient by mitigating potential negative thoughts by initiating effective communication between the healthcare professional and the patient (NHS 2022). Such approaches to therapy and activities ensure better support and maintain interpersonal relationships thereby exhibiting personalized care for mental health. Stress of the person is mitigated by such therapies as they are engaging in productive activities.

People are affected by mental health illness regardless of their age and gender. Though there are multiple extensive activities for maintaining better mental health, however, some self-care practices like meditation can effectively help patients manage better mental states. In support of that, a study conducted by Jamil et al. (2023) has mentioned that meditation significantly improves the positive response against emotional activities and also enhances social relations thereby mitigating the potential development of negative thoughts. As it could be inferred that the activity of meditation can significantly lower the level of cortisol in the body thereby reducing conditions of stress and tension.

Communication can significantly help to transfer the thoughts of a person to the healthcare professional thereby allowing to fostering of better strategies for planning treatment for the patients and ensuring better understanding along with trust in healthcare services. In support of that, Dall et al. (2022) have mentioned that the implementation of social communication can bridge the gaps for communication breakdown and help mitigate behavioural as well as emotional problems. According to Sharkiya (2023), the approach of effective communication can facilitate patient-centric care in a healthcare setting that can significantly reduce the chances of developing stigma and mistrust in healthcare providers thereby increasing efficiency in making decisions.

Children and the adolescent population, are relatively affected by mental health conditions and require extensive support to maintain their well-being. They can be effectively implemented for art therapy and other creative approaches that enhance their skills and abilities for better health outcomes along with facilitating motivation for them. According to the discussion of Shukla et al. (2022), the approach of art therapy aims to control the manifestation related to the behaviour of psychosocial challenges that reduce the cognitive functioning of the patient. Art therapy can significantly enhance the quality of life for the suffering individual by mitigating potential risk factors for developing side effects against medication.

Mental health is known to be associated with the condition of mortality and suicide as a result of negative thoughts of a person. Mitigating potential aspects of social isolation can enhance overall mental well-being. In support of that, a study conducted by Brandt et al. (2022) has mentioned that social exclusion or isolation are determined to be key factors in causing conditions of distress that eventually affect mental health and develop other potentially complicated conditions. Hence, this could be inferred that the inclusion of the family members can effectively mitigate such critical conditions by supporting them with empathy.
