He has around 40 years of experience in retailing business and his hard work and his extraordinary contribution in the past 20 years have made him reach different heights and now he is one of the [popular figure of Australia. Although he have retired from Woolworths CEO post but he will still act as one of the consulting member. All these honours are bestowed upon Roger Corbett due to his excellent working style especially his leadership skills.
Roger Corbett followed Authoritarian style of Leadership when he was with Woolworths. It is believed that for the development of the organization he uses to make some different rules and regulations and also ensures that the employees follow them strictly. He was hard and at the same time makes proper conversation with his employees (Baird, 2006). His employees believe that his style made them work towards the development of the organization and they even got a lot to learn. Currently with Fairfax Media he follows a diplomatic leadership style because of his low knowledge in media. He allows his employees to participate in the decision making process.
Roger Corbett follows the Relationship theory of Leadership, where he believes that only if employer and employees maintain a great relationship the organization can always move in the path of success. According to Roger Corbett’s it is the management team that can create proper organizational strategies. The Relationship theory of Leadership emphasis on the fact that a leader main task is to be friendly yet professional with the followers (Komives & Lucas, 2006). This would develop a trust level of the follower towards the leader and thus the leader can make his rules and regulation clear with the followers. Leaders are never meant to rule the followers rather their main task is to make the followers move in the path of success.
Roger Corbett believes that his employees trust made him successful. The main strength of Roger Corbett was he focused more on relationship with his employees and automatically all the other things moved in place (Durie, 2009). Even though he retired from Woolworths still his employees respects him and the organization consults him.
One weakness of Roger Corbett is his tough nature. This sometimes makes the employees of the new organizations feel that he is implementing his rules and decision forcefully. This would make him more like a boss and less like a leader. It is thus very essential that he follows a diplomatic style of managing the organizations (Breecher, 2009). He should involve the employees in taking any organization decisions. Especially with Fairfax Media he needs to maintain a different style as he is new to media world.
With all his strengths and weakness people still respect the leadership and working style of
Roger Corbett and this make him holds all the important positions in different sectors.
