Leadership Development – An Overview
Learning and leadership are indispensable to one another, as argued by none other than John F. Kennedy.
If leadership development is to be suitably enhanced it needs to go through the following procedures –
A) Action
B) Observation
C) Reflection
The Spiral Experience Model also serves as an effective tool for leadership enhancement and development.
About the spiral of experience model
The experience that an individual undergoes is dependent on the types of events that one is exposed to as part of one’s daily existence as also the ways by which he or she chooses to perceive such events or experience
People are in a position to construct and to shape their experiences quite actively
Profound influence is exerted by perception on action, observation and reflection, and which is known also by the term AOR model.
Fundamental Leadership Archetypes
The fundamental leadership archetypes that are worthy of discussion are as follows –
The judge and the father
The knight and the warrior
The crusader and the revolutionary
The mentor and the teacher
The alchemist and the visionary
All the roles described above entail the exercise of leadership qualities, implementing which the goals and objectives associated with such leadership traits and archetypes may successfully be achieved.
Double loop learning and single loop learning
Double loop learning –
This is a process of learning whereby one is able to confront one’s own views on a variety of different matters while encouraging other people to do the same as well.
Single Loop Learning –
This is a learning process whereby little feedback is sought by the learners, that is, the type of feedback that can confront their existing modes of thinking and believing.
Single loop learners tend to operate within their comfort zone and are seldom seen to try or accept anything outside of it.
Building self leadership image
People need to be aware about the importance, the dynamism and the pervasiveness of leadership and should cultivate an image or personality that reflects leadership traits
People often tend to evade building a leadership image because of the responsibilities and duties that are associated with the image of a leader.
Most people don’t believe they have what it takes to be a good leader.
However, acknowledging the significance of leadership is necessary and imbibing leadership traits is even more necessary if one is to lead a productive and constructive life.
