Family life, irrespective of the family type, can be exceedingly complex because of the emotional complexities involved. Family members have different personalities and this leads to ego clashes. Janine Roberts is the president of American Family Therapy Academy.  In her article she elaborates on the complexities of step family life; Roberts says that these complexities can be dizzying.Roberts concludes at the end of her piece that the complexities of the step family life can be resolved by taking cognizance of them and accepting them rather than ignoring or denying them. Such complexities are natural and so the best course is to accept them and live with them. The same principle applies to other family types – single parent family, divorced single parent family, minority single parent family, two parent families etc (Roberts, Jannie. 2002).

Every family type has its unique challenges besides the challenges and complexities that are common to all family types.  The unique challenges come from the structure unique to a given family type. So an individual living in stepfamily type will have to deal with multiple relationships; a child living in a single parent family will have to cope with the void left by the absence of another parent. Emotional disengagement, negative reciprocity, emotional flooding etc are some of the other challenges that families face (Roberts, Jannie, 2002).There is no ideal family type because the success of a family is largely dependent on the way the family members manage their mutual relationships and come to terms with the inherent challenges. Empirical evidence doesn’t support the view that some family types do not work at all. Irrespective of the family type, Satir (1988) described the following traits in optimally functioning families which he described as untroubled, vital and nurturing:

i)                    Family members enjoy high self-worth or self-esteem.

ii)                  The communication between family members is direct, clear, specific and honest.

iii)                Family rules are flexible, human and appropriate.

iv)                Family links to their social world are open and hopeful.
