Q?? What is meant by Ethical Dilemma?
Solution the question proposes is::
Ethical Dilemma is referred to as a situation which often involves an apparent conflict between moral imperatives where obeying one results in transgressing another. Many a times it is also referred to as ethical paradox as in moral philosophy paradox plays a very vital role. For example an ethical admonition to “to love thy neighbor thy self’’ is not just a contrast but often a contradiction to the armed neighbor actively attempting to kill you. In case he succeeds you would not be able to love him. However a preemptively attack them would not be understood as loving. It is one of the classic examples one can have for explaining ethical decisions to clash or conflict with the organismic decision (AAbri n.d).
Why it is an ethical dilemma in a business situation?
Ethical Dilemma is hugely affecting the work place in today’s environment. The managers and other members of the organization have to remain positive. Everyone should try and indulge in ethical practices by following a responsible behavior. It is important for companies to work towards sustainable development that helps them develop a good image for themselves. Many MNCs work in an unethical manner and when they come in the notice of public their image are hugely tainted. Unethical practices may be good for short term gains but it leads to a huge loss in the long run. It becomes important for the organization to use such practices that help them develop their business and remain safe from all the negative effects.
In the challenge to beat the competition the worker or the manager may encounter a situation where they might face some unethical issues. It is important to find a way out and deal with the situation cleverly. Managing situations in different countries and different centers is a difficult job, one need to be sure of the wants of the consumer and the way people think. To explain the presence of ethical dilemma in today’s business we can take the example of Nestlé’s business in the year 1977 where the company got embroiled in a controversy. The company was criticized for using unethical practices that endangered consumer health for promoting its infant formula in a developing nation. There were several aid agencies who called for a boycott for Nestlé’s products which continued till the year 1980. This was the year when the company finally adopted the infant formula marketing code laid by WHO and UNICEF. The company had its own charter on infant formula but was caught several times for violating the principles which had been laid down (Springer 1986).
The criticism and charge which the company was facing was the use of genetically modified ingredients for the food products. It was also accused of dumping the rejected products in the European nations to the Asian countries where he laws for GM products was less stringent and even absent at many countries (Nation Multimedia n.d). The decision makers of the company had to advocate the marketing of these products even though they were themselves in a position of uniformed consumers. Thus this states the presence of ethical dilemma in business where even though marketers were aware of the consequences had to market the product of the company. On the part of the company providing unsafe and substandard products to its consumers was absolutely wrong (Succeezz n.d).
Ethical solutions on certain Chinese business
Chinese products are selling high across the world and have been famous in virtually every country. However being low on cost the businesses in China has been in the news of adopting unethical means to manufacture their products. Many of these businesses have been criticized by the global business markets for the materials they use and the labor policies they have. One such example could be of the Chinese made toys which were selling almost everywhere across the world. It is the duty of the manufacturers to specify every known effect that a particular product could cause. In the case of Chinese toys they came with lead paints and tiny magnets which could be swallowed by the kids. As this news spread across the world in the year 2007 Mattel had to recall its 9 million Chinese made toys. These toys also included the famous Barbie, Cars, Polly Pockets, etc. The company also warned that more could be ordered off store shelves as they were made with unethical means.
The same company had to recall 1.5 million Fisher Price toys from across the globe about a fortnight before this decision was made. This decision by the Mattel which was the largest toy maker in China due to safety concerns had adverse impacts in the Chinese toy markets. It was so severe that many manufacturers suffered economically and there was news of one of the toy maker committing suicide due to these decisions. While this was seen as a major revenue generator for the local toy manufacturers who were working for Mattel due to unethical means of production turned out to be a destroying element for the business. The manufacturers seeking growth potential and demand for their products kept on increasing their production where they themselves were aware of the adverse effects of the products they were manufacturing. This represents a perfect case of an ethical business dilemma where the companies were working solely with a profit motive (Rollins 2010).
If the companies would have been stringent to their safety measures and quality of materials being used this scenario would never have come up. Therefore we can say even though unethical practices and business methods may seem to be good for the short run is not at all good for the companies in their longer period. It may attract great revenues but definitely would never be helpful for the company’s future growth potential and ability of generating more revenue (Romania-Insider 2012).
