Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain your viewpoint by referring to appropriate theories, models and concepts.

SOLUTION

“A national system of innovation does not help the commercialization of disruptive or sustaining innovation”, I am highly disagree with this statement. A nation is always encouraged towards the development of new technologies to add value and to gain competitive advantage. This also helps the nation to gain credibility in terms of technological advancement and innovation. On the basis of these aspects an economy runs effectively. The innovation is one of the most important and critical aspect for a nation. If the nation doesn’t support to the innovation then it is obvious that the nation is not going to sustain for a long run. Every nation wants to grow and develop and if we stop the trend and development of innovation, then how can we expect the nation will grow and on which basis the nation will grow?

To achieve something there is always a need of pathway and disruptive innovation is the pathway of the growth and development of any nation. If the nation will not support the innovation then there is no chance of growth and even sustainability of the particular nation.

Innovation is commonly understood as novelty leading to value creation on the market. According to the Oslo Manual (OECD 2005), innovation is the development and implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or service), or process, a new marketing method, or entirely new organizational method to improve the business practice in an effective and competitive manner. The innovation may be very new to the company or a nation and it may have both the positive and negative impact on the society or economy. The main concern is to use and utilize the innovation and its findings in an effective and positive manner. We can see the use of technology; it makes us more effective while working and helps us a lot in solving mechanical problems effectively. So it depends on the usability and utility of the innovation, their effectiveness or ineffectiveness.

Disruptive innovation

Disruptive innovations are innovations that eventually overturn the existing dominant technologies or products in the market (Christensen, 1997). Disruptive innovation comes as a turbulent flow and makes a drastic change in the whole scenario. These aspects of the disruptive innovation are very much required for making or provoking a change in the whole process. It is disruptive innovation that works as a change catalyst in the whole process of the growth and development of a nation.

The framework of Innovation

The innovation system comprises with three main elements:

  1. Institutional arrangement: The initial phase of innovation that is being leaded by the institutional arrangements and helps in finding new ways of procedure in terms of innovation and research.
  2. Resource endowment: The resources are one of the major catalysts in the innovation process. We musts look over the resource endowment for the better aspects of the innovation process and development.
  3. Proprietary functions: The proprietary functions help in the finalization of the product of the services that is being developed by the initial innovation process. So it is again an important factor for the completion of the innovation process.

These are the main aspects and elements that lead to the innovation process. Private and public sector both work together to develop these aspects and support the whole process and cycle of innovation.

The Linear Model of Innovation

This is the simplest model of innovation that supports the basic characteristics of the innovation process. According to this model the innovation generates with a need or problem identification and terminates at the need satisfaction by means of products or services that is being developed by the innovation process.

There are basically four important phased in this model,

  1. Research: The very fist and initial stage is to research, to find the need and requirement of the change in the existing process. If we find some valid and effective result that leads us to make a change in the existing process, then only we will continue to the next stage i.e. Development.
  2. Development: At this stage, we will go for the product or service development as per the need and requirement of the common people/customer. The development phase may take some more time to make a proper and scheduled development of the required product or services. At first we make a blueprint of the model and we go for the pilot testing and if we get the proper and satisfactory result then only we go for the mass production.
  3. Production: Mass production is again an important phase in the innovation process. We need to take care of the quality of the product, timing, pricing strategy and other aspects such as supply chain and all.
  4. Marketing: This is the last phase of the innovation that leads to the satisfaction of the need and requirement that is being caught at the initial phase i.e research phase of the innovation process.

Discussion

Innovation is one of the most important aspects that leads to the growth and development of any nation. If the nation is not backed by innovation then it shows their inefficiency and results in the lesser development prospective compared to the nation that is more indulge in the innovation process.

Innovation strengthens the nation and helps the nation to grow and utilize its available resources in an effective and competitive manner. I the nation is able to utilize its available resources in an optimal way then it is obvious that the nation will grow and develop accordingly.

If we talk about the effectiveness of the nation based on the disruptive innovation the we can say that the innovation helps in development of the strategic aspects and planning for the effective and integrated development of the nation as per the availability of the resources to them. These aspects are very much required to make an effective move towards the betterment of the nation and its optimal development.

Advantages

We can see the advantages of innovation that leads to the development of nation in an effective and competitive manner. Earlier we were not having computer and now it’s one of the most important and even vital aspect of our life. We cannot think our life without a computer. This is just like a boon for us and helps us to solve any task in an effective and efficient manner. This is just the example of disruptive innovation that changed the whole aspect of technology and made an effective transition in the whole process of disruptive innovation. There are “n” numbers of advantages we can see in our daily life that is being made by the disruptive technology and innovation. So we can think of the need of the disruptive innovation for the betterment of our life and the betterment of a nation as well.

Disadvantages

Everything has some negative and positive aspects hand on hand. But the main concern is to utilize it effectively rather than misusing the innovation. If we are able to utilize it effectively and positively then it will have a positive effect on us and vice versa.

Conclusion

As we have seen all the aspects of utility and non utility of the disruptive innovation and their framework and models. The main concern is to make us understand the need and utility of the disruptive innovation for the betterment of our living criteria and that will directly reflect in the development and growth of the nation. So it is very necessary to have a better consideration of the disruptive innovation that may help the nation to grow effectively and develop exponentially.

The national system of innovation is always incorporated with the disruptive innovation to make the nation more effective and innovation rather than being based upon the outdated technologies and the theories. They must upgrade themselves to the next level and it is only possible with the help of disruptive innovation that will lead to the development of the nation to the next phase and make a better chance of the growth of the nation based on those research and development. If we are able to meet the challenges in front of us, then we can easily ensure us that the nation is at a growing phase and if we continue with the same aspect then we will surely move towards the growth and development in an integrated manner. But the main concern is to utilize it effectively and positively rather than making fun of it.

So we can easily conclude that the national system of innovation is always incorporated with the disruptive innovation that will support the nation to go to the next phase and further develop the nation in an effective and competitive manner. To move to the next level in a strategic manner and with all the planning the nation always require the disruptive innovation/sustainable innovation that will further help the nation to grow and attain the new heights in their path of success. This will also help the nation to gain competitive advantage and sustainable development.
