As defined by Napoleon Bonaparte- “A leader is a dealer in hope”. It is a quality which is well admired by people and business experts from each corner of the world.
Some of the most admired leaders of all time are Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. What is the real essence behind making them great leaders of all time? Leadership bears some special attributes which should be present in declaring a person a leader. Now the question arises about what should be the role of a leader and his or her contribution to the society.
Features of a leader
As already mentioned that leadership is quite difficult to define but can be analyzed with some specific attributes which a leader should possess in real terms.
Power of Vision: a leader is one who gives to the group he is leading a vision to decide how to achieve the target decided. This power of vision opens up the window of hope full of emotion that the target which is set can be achieved by them.
Reliability: A leader is the person on whom the group can rely on. He needs to be consistent in his performance so that his actions and efforts can be well followed by the followers. Robert Half specially mentioned “Delegating work works, provided the one delegating works, too.”
Sense of audacity: A leader need to posses the guts to take charge in any critical situation without any hesitation.
Give power to people: As a leader the person to empower people to succeed in achieving the target with the help of well equipped tools.
Positive- ness: When the need is to succeed, a positive attitude is a must whatever be the task. A positive approach in the leader in turn energizes the people to follow the path to be successful.
Motivation: Having all the above qualities but not the power of motivation will in no way help a leader to be successful. The quality of motivation is one of the most important features of a true leader in real sense. (Dustin, D,2009)
The above are some of the many features which a leader should possess to attain success in achieving the goal.
Leadership displayed in the movie Gandhi
The movie Gandhi of 1982 is a biographical story of the great leader of India who played an active role for gaining Indian independence against the British with his nonviolent resistance movement in the first half of the 20th century. The story is a complete flash back of 55 years back when young Gandhi of 24 years old was thrown from the train for travelling in first class coach even bearing the ticket for it. The biasness in behavior towards the Indians in South Africa was well realized by him and with this vision he decided to take the initiative to lead a non-violent protest campaign for the right of the Indians. Undergoing several arrests the government of South Africa decided to grant some relaxation to the Indian people over there. He was later welcomed back to India as a great leader with great vision and the power to motivate people to attain justice for them. He conducted the non-violent non-cooperation campaign here in India to regain Independence of India from the British Empire and motivated millions of people to fight for it from all corners of India. The movement lead by Gandhi forced the British to grant Indian Independence. But the next followed the religious tension between the Hindus and the Muslims; here also Gandhiji took the initiative as a leader to go on hunger strike with the demand to stop the tension for a peaceful scenario. The movie clearly depicts the leadership quality and its contribution to the society of India. His vision, positive ness of mind, Motivating power and reliability to work together proved him as a successful leader who is remembered even today as a great leader with great ideas.
Factors of leadership
The four major factors which gives birth to the quality of leadership are Leader, Follower, Communication and at last Situation. ( Army, UA, 1983)
Leader: A leader should know who she or he is. A leader should be aware of what they can do and what not. It is in the hands of the followers to decide whether the person next to them is eligible to become a leader or not and no one else possess the power to decide it. Inspiration of the leader will not work if the followers fail to keep trust and belief on the leader. So it is the sole duty of the leader to convince the followers that he as a leader truly deserves the quality of a leader who can be followed to achieve the goal, what so ever it may be.
Followers: The second and one of the most important factors are the followers whom the leader led. Giving true leadership is not so easy, for successful leadership you need to know your followers in the best possible way. The characteristic of each follower varies from the other. So, first the leader should judge what short of leadership the follower need in real terms. If the leadership is from organization point of view a new comer will require supervision, person lacking motivation will be in need of a different way of motivation. All that is required is a perfect sense of understanding of the human nature to lead the followers in the correct direction to achieve the goal of life.
Communication:
In technical terms there are two ways of communications, verbal and non verbal. In most of the cases the use is of non verbal communication especially when the leader sets the example, which communicates what he as a leader expects to follow by his followers. So communication plays a very important role to build the bridge of faith and trust between the leader and the follower.
Situation: Like people situation also varies from time to time and from place to place. Similar style of leadership cannot be used to handle all situations. A variation in the style of leadership is a must to manage and lead a typical situation. The action of the leader in certain situation acts as the tool to attain success beside motivating and communicating the line of action to the followers.
Situation normally creates the greater impact on the action of the leader in comparison to the traits and qualities of him. The reason behind this is that traits have stability for longer period but little consistency in typical situations.
The best example of it can be depicted in the movie “Gandhi”, were the situation when Gandhi was thrown down from the train, creates the impact in him to act towards the independence of the Indian people at South Africa. That is the reason why experts in leadership give more importance to the “Process Theory of Leadership” rather than the “Trait Theory of Leadership”.
Ways to Motivate followers in an Organization- You Will Be Seen as an Incredible Leader
Motivation is considered as one of the prime source which plays the role to inspire the specific action of a leader. In an organization the employees should be motivated in such a manner so that their course of action functions well in making of the organization move to the next level, rather than breaking it.
Stress works in a negative way on motivation and on the other hand motivation also works well in overcoming stress. Besides giving a good pay to employees various other crucial ingredients along with motivation need to be taken care off in order to be a good leader with great qualities to enhance the growth and success of the organization, making sure that the employees contribute in the best possible way to the success. (Gardner,GG, 2009)
The following are some of the key pointers to find and motivate the areas which will help the employees to achieve the best for the organizational goal achievement.
1) Offering of adequate amount of responsibility to employees and workers
2) To give appreciation and recognition for the work delivered by the employees.
3) Opening up of possibilities and growths for the employees and workers for better prospect.
4) The responsibility allotted to the employees and workers need to be satisfying for them.
5) Good pay and security of job keep employees satisfied and motivated
6) Interpersonal relationship between boss and subordinate should not be a barrier which impacts the well being of the employees. A separate should work for handling the issues and conflicts of the business.

8) Support to employees to get the work done in appropriate and correct way to achieve the goal of the organization.
9) To design an appropriate set of policies and rules for the employees and workers so that the values and self respect of them is not hurt.
Being a leader if the above key pointers can be taken care off in true spirit, then everyone will recognize that a true leader is born contribution the society in the best possible way.
Role of ego in leadership
An organization cannot be set with a single people, so there will be a need of group of people. All of them will have different approach, goal, mission, vision in life. And all of them possess different variety ego. The ego in human being makes every individual feel that they are capable to perform any and many task in a succesfull manner. In any every work area ego helps to reach the position of a successful leader. Effort, desire and Ego, helps to succeed as a leader. Here comes the paradox of ego. Ego definitely helps you to reach the position of a leader, but to be a true leader ego should not come in between while taking strong decision, it should be kept aside. Ego in one hand makes you a leader and on the other hand it prevents you from being a true and effective leader. (Cohen, G.C, 2009)
As a leader:
1) Ego help to achieve target
2) Ego helps to get recognition
3) Ego should be shrinked while concentrating on altruism.
4) Place your ego below your employees ego
5) Allow the ego of the employees to shine
If the ego of the leader is directed in right way, then the employees, the organization and the leader will be served in a better way.
