Diversity refers to proper understanding of the individual as well as recognizing the differences amongst the same. Some of the various dimensions to be taken care of would be race, culture, religion, gender, social group, ethnicity, social status, religious beliefs, political beliefs, ideologies, etc. It refers to an in depth understanding of all the similarities & dissimilarities (HR Hero.com, 2011).
The primary & secondary characteristics in regards to diversity could be as follows such as educational backgrounds, work backgrounds, income, marital status, military experiences, religious beliefs, geographic locations, parental status. Some of the secondary characteristics in regards to diversity would be age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual affection, physical abilities & qualities.
- Select two of the articles from the UN declaration of human rights & explain why these are relevant to diversity.
Ans2. The two articles selected from the UN declaration of human rights are relevant to diversity. The first article states that all the human beings are born free & equal in all respects. But, once they attain certain stage in life they get engaged amongst the various activities such as caste, creed, religion, etc. Human beings get engaged with diverse backgrounds & act in the spirit of brotherhood (HR Hero.com, 2011).
The second article from the UN declaration of human rights suggests that all the human beings are entitled to different types of freedom, rights irrespective of caste, race, sex, religion, language, etc. In addition to this it must be seen that no distinction shall be made on the basis of political, jurisdictional as well as the status of the country (Mitchell, 2010).Identify instances where members of diverse groups have been denied the rights identified in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. These examples can come from inside of outside Australia and cover any period of time.
Ans3. One of the instances which happened in Australia & led to racism discrimination could be explained as under. Racial discrimination in Australia has been on constant rise. This led to high levels of disappointed amongst the various groups. High levels of disadvantage & social dislocation has come into picture. This also raised concern towards refugees, terrorism, assaults on foreign students, asylum seekers, etc. This instance shows that diverse groups have been denied of the rights identified in the UN Declaration Human Rights (HR Hero.com, 2011)..
- Discuss an incident with which you familiar in which diversity is a central element. Make clear how diversity was, and was not, dealt with appropriately.
Ans4. An incident which shows diversity as a central element has been defined as under. At one of the small company in Connecticut Madison Co., one of the employees had undergone a major change in his body. The supervisor got a change in its gender. After the operation, the supervisor rejoined the office & was now changes to a man named Tony. The president of that organization made it a point that all the staff members would treat him with dignity & respect. All the members of the company decided to respect his decision & accepted him after the change in the gender (HR Hero.com, 2011).

- What does discrimination mean under the Equal Opportunity Act, 1984.Ans1. According to the Equal Opportunity Act, 1984 discrimination has been defined as a process of noting the differences amongst the things. In our day to day lives, we make huge number of choices. It must be noted that, discrimination is not always wrong but has been termed as unfair as well as against the law. It is unlawful to discriminate the people base upon their personal aspects such as age, sex, background, caste, creed, religion, etc. Giving equal opportunity would refer to one of the best ways with which discrimination could be reduced or removed (Doyle, 2007).
- Identify the types of discrimination under the Equal Opportunity Act, 1984.
Ans2. The following types of discrimination have been recorded under the Equal Opportunity Act, 1984. They are as follows:
Þ Discrimination on the basis of age
Þ Discrimination on the basis of the association with the child
Þ Discrimination on the chosen gender
Þ Discrimination on the basis of sex
Þ Discrimination on the basis of race
Þ Discrimination on the basis of marital or domestic status
Þ Discrimination on the basis of religion
Þ Discrimination on the basis of any disability
Þ Discrimination on the basis of pregnancy
- Provide three examples of discrimination under the Equal Opportunity Act, 1984.
Ans3. Three examples of discrimination under the Equal Opportunity Act, 1984 could be as follows:
Þ Discrimination on the basis of sex: Discrimination on the basis of sex has been rising at an alarming rate. The male bosses try to humiliate or harass the opposite sex. The female workers are motivated to be sexually involved with their bosses & in return the bosses pay a handsome amount of money (Equal Opportunity Commission, 2011).
Þ Discrimination on the basis of age: It has been seen that most of the prospective job seekers do not get a job as they become quiet old. Sometimes the old & experienced candidates are considered a bit expensive in terms of pension, benefits, etc (Doyle, 2007).
Þ Discrimination on the basis of religion: In most organizations people do not get a job because of the religion they belong to. The house lenders also prefer to rent their piece of property to the person belonging to their own caste, religion, race or creed (Mitchell, 2010).
- Using the Public Sector Principles (Section 5) Public Sector Act, 2009 explain how these principles can assist in delivering services to members of diverse groups.Ans4. The Public Sector Principles (Section 5) would refer to the principles which would mainly focus upon the services to be provided to the general public. These provisions would help in order to recognize the diversity of the need of the public & the changing needs as well. This would involve the general public & improvise upon the services, outcomes on continuous basis.
These principles would also help in a continuous collaboration of the various public sector agencies. This would help to deal with the various types of diverse groups all together. Public sector principles would provide various types of services & ensure high levels of effectiveness amongst the various diverse groups (Doyle, 2007).
