I have played a major role in facilitating the tasks which were performed in my team. The degree of being task focused was relatively higher for me when compared to being relationship focused. As personally I felt, the relationships will automatically build as and when your objectives as a team are met. Most of the times I felt my team was not in the right track and we were wasting a lot of time discussing about issues which were not really related to our task. Below are the few roles which I have played for my team to effectively meet our objectives.

• Direction Giving 

At the time when we 5 members of the team met, to decide on the ways to go about with the project, I initiated the project, by asking the team members as to which part they feel they are comfortable in. Later I assigned the tasks and duties to the particular person and discussed with him as to how exactly does he plan in going about with the work. I then advised him at certain points that “This way would work better” and ensured that all of us are in the right path of meeting our goals.

• Monitoring

This was a very important step in keeping a constant track weather the work assigned to each team member is being done. In order to be clear on our goals, I was monitoring the tasks assigned, by e-mailing the team members and arranging frequent meetings to discuss the difficulties being faced in performing or to see if the team members are comfortable in their work and are focused. I also played a role of motivating them and see to it that their efforts are being recognized by saying “Good Job”, “Excellent piece of work”.

Relationship Building:

Relationship building plays a key role in every team and is one of the prime factors for every team to be successful. These roles are especially important when there is a disagreement, conflict or if any of the team members are not contributing to the team’s performance.

• Supporting

In order for any team to be successful, the team members should support each other. My ultimate goal apart from just achieving our objectives with the project proposal was to maintain a strong bond between the team members. I used to support the team members opinions though at sometimes the points were not clear and did not relate to the topic, however I used to always accept the points with friendliness and revert back and convince the team with my observations on the topic.

• Harmonizing

There was a argument which arose in our team between Atiq and Annie. The issue was both of them were saying the same thing, but in different ways, and Annie wanted her way to be adopted as it seemed more realistic, but on the other hand Atiq was more logical in his approach and was being creative with the issue. However I took the role of a mediator and hand to bring both of them down to a common level, were in neither of them felt that their points are being rejected. In doing so, I had to maintain a healthy working environment, as well as ensure we are working towards our goals without deviating from the topic.

• Tension Relieving

It is always important to see that the team is happy while working on a project. There were a number of ways in which we as a team used to relieve our tensions. We used to imitate a few of our friends, discuss memorable events in each other’s lives and go for dinner etc which used to lower our stress to a great extent and it also helped us in building a strong relationship and getting to know each other better. For eg: By doing this not only would we have fun, but at the same time we would know what are the sensitive lines of the other members which we should be careful off and do not intent to cross it in order to maintain flexibility in the team.

Managing Personal Stress

 Getting stressed is one of the biggest troubles which I have always faced throughout my life. Usually I tend to rely on my old habits of being silent under extreme stress and tend to listen less to others. But however stress sometimes has a positive effect on me, as it makes me think more and generate a solution which I wouldn’t have if I was not undergoing stress. I prefer to stay alone during high stress levels and adopt the enactive strategy of coping up with the stress. Time stressor and Anticipatory stressor are the most common types of stress which I have experienced while working in a team. During the last few days before completing the project and going for the presentation, our team had final rounds of rehearsal to see if we are well set for presenting; It was at this point that one of our team members was not being able to perform well as he started to fumble while speaking. I felt the need of extra time for us to prepare well with the presentation. I got stressed at this point, and had a fear of scoring low grades in this particular project. Despite of having this fear, I kept a positive attitude and motivated my team members to speak confidently whatever they have to say as we did not have enough time to make any changes to the document.

Supportive Communication

 Supportive communication is the key to build positive interpersonal relationship, and every human being must possess the ability to communicate supportively in order to perform better at tasks and at work. During the working of my project, there was an instance where my team member Amreen, was not agreeing to my point, as according to her it was not very specific and she wanted to remove it from the project report. Despite of her being aggressive, I maintained positive attitude and handled the situation without jeopardizing our interpersonal relationship. I used the technique of elaboration probing, to try and understand her point of view and the reason for disagreeing. By doing this we both narrowed down our argument and ensured we are comfortable with the chosen method of proceeding with the report.
