HR assignment on: Bernard case study
The situation in which Brenda and Bernard are presently living is different from the others, as they are living on an altogether different plane in the society being an elderly couple. Unlike many, they have to make their livelihood. According to the demographic details which have been given it is seen that Bernard has been hit by his situation both mentally and physically. Along with his retirement his health has also been affected much, and so he has acquired much trouble with his joints and that is why Bernard had to leave gardening. The case study does not clarify the absolute reasons behind Bernard’s escape from normality of life into being an alcoholic but the case provides many hints which direct towards the reason which must be there behind all these circumstances. The children of this couple are married off and so are not much connected to the household and therefore they are alone and have to fight with the times by themselves. The best support which this couple can get in this situation is that of some social professionals who can help them out of the stress they are facing presently in their life (Lymbery, M 1997). The social workers are those professionals who usually join hands with the popular organisation so as to help out a particular community and this couple falls under the community of the elderly people. Therefore, the organisations which support these people would have interventions by which the elderly people in the family can be benefitted and supported. Social workers are the selfless ones and so they are considered as the fittest of all to help the people in distress. In case of Bernard who has been addicted to alcohol can only be helped out by an external agency only who should be a social welfare worker, in a way that he could pacify with Bernard first and then should work upon his attitude. Though Bernard has been taken up for to be helped by the psychiatrist yet there seems a great need in this case that professional help has to be sought. This professional help can carry out the counselling sessions with these people and therefore announce the profitable outcomes and they would be best described by Bernard himself. In this case it is seen that one problem is leading to another like the problem arises from being out of job, then acquiring arthritis, and subsequent addition to alcohol. One can see that Bernard had been degrading with his circumstances, so in this case a social worker can be helpful enough in handling the issue which are related to the Bernard like his arthritis and the poor income. The social worker would hold a holistic approach toward the couple and would employ a multi-disciplinary working with the elderly couple (Naughtin, G. & Schofield, V 2009). The situation complex in case of Brenda and Bernard as there is nobody who can personally take care of them and it is mentioned that their children also do not stay away with that is speaking to them and listening to what they have to say. The professionals who would be associated with the couple would have to balance two things, at one hand they would have to provide enough independence to them so that they can bring out what they want and on the other hand they would have to manage vulnerable traits in them. A major responsibility of the social worker would be to initiate in Bernard the responsibility he still has to hold towards his wife and that he should not be escaping away from the role which he should play as a partner (Roberts, E 2000).The social worker would be in a way counselling Bernard and he should be made to know that acquiring arthritis should not be a hindrance for him and that he should accept the life as it comes to him. In case of handling Brenda the major role which a social worker would play is to empower Brenda to accept the circumstances in which she is present. In fact it is passed by the legislation that a social worker can effectively help the people in need and even can intervene in the matters which might be personal in nature. The elderly are especially seen to be vulnerable to the environment and in case they feel helpless they take up various habits which can turn out be really harmful for them, like in Bernard’s case it is the habit to take up alcohol ( Park, H 2011). The duty of a social worker in this case would be to help the couple to lead a much simpler and happy life in the later years which they have with them, and as it is evident that Brenda would need severe care because she is physically impaired the social worker would also provide the financial aid to the couple. Out of all the roles which a social worker has to play, the prominent role is that of the counsellor, that is this kind of the job would require certain skills which any qualification cannot guarantee, as this requires more of a human side to the work that is having the capability to serve the people who require love and attention. It is seen that Bernard has been showing violent behaviour and even have shut away the doors of the house to the maids who were granted to him for domestic help, and this way it can be seen that the social workers can play the role of the mediator between them and the society. Bernard’s case is a little at extreme, he is violent and he runs away from the pressures which he has in his life and when he is out of control he is admitted to the psychiatrist. In such cases, the social work can play the role of the right advocate for Bernard and could see the most suitable way out for him to deal with his condition (Young, C 2012).As it is seen that Brenda is admitted in the hospital and Bernard is also admitted to a psychiatrist, the social workers can be of help in the day care centres and the nursing homes when they need home-like care. The nurses and the doctors can be there to take care whether the couple is medically fit or not but the mental counselling and the mental well-being can only be taken care by the social workers whenever there are the time of the crisis. The handling of this couple would require the social worker to have the patience so that they could be handled with care, the patience would be required so that they could know the history of the family and should work accordingly. It would be obvious for them to understand that what had been the habits of Brenda and Bernard, and this would be the wisest option to begin with the cases the same as this one. Their management is the most important thing, in the work which they are provided, and this management would have to be done taking care of many legislative policies. A thread of relation has to be woven between their individual experiences the elderly people have had and the present patterns in which they are living presently (Hughes, M 2010).The social workers are the ones who primarily have to be empathetic to the needs and the requirements of the old than being solely sympathetic to the conditions of the older people. The empathy has to be there for them and that also not for their age but because of the loss by which they are suffering in this age, because of the disability, like Brenda has acquired because of the heart attack, the mental instability in Bernard because of the loss of the government job, then the problem of arthritis and his subsequent alcoholism. The legislation in UK is such where the social workers with the elderly are described as the ‘case managers’ and the focus had been on the procedure and the management of their requirements thus facilitating a flexible approach to the scenario. The legislation also supports that the organisations who are engaging in the social work should not only support the older individuals in the family by raising the funds but also by the providing them with the facilities just like the ones which are found in home (Kate Holliday 2011). The utmost care is usually given to the health and the degree of financial fitness, the governmental help can be in the home of the free shelter and the meals till the time some vocational job is not provided to the elderly people. A sin Bernard’s case it could be seen that he was working life-long as a plumber till his retirement, therefore it would be the role of the organisation to help sort out the possible reasons which might have affected his mental stability. As the shift in Bernard’s routine in all the past years also meant a shift in the relationships which he had formed in the society and also the identification which he almost must have formed. The organisations also have certain laws which seek to help the people like Brenda and Bernard in distress so that they lead a healthy life in an improved financial status.
