HR Assignment help on : Human Resource Management and Trade Unions
There is a team consisting of three members. As one of the members of my team and being HR Consultant first of all I want to explain about employee and industrial relations, trade unions unite and the changes that are taking place at United Kingdom. I think Industrial relationship is a term used legally in different countries of the world since many years. It explains the relationship between employees and its employer’s to achieve success for an organization. The main aim of creating better employment relationship is to protect the workers interest, avoid the problems in form of grievances, strikes and lockouts, and empower the employees for facilitating the management in decision making process. It is a mutual process and employer, employees and trade unions need to manage it for developing healthy employment relations at workplace. The healthy employment relationship helps to motivate the employees to work effectively and efficiently by coordinating each other (John Wiley & Sons 2012). It also helps in developing better working environment to increase the profits and eliminate the costs. It has been found that management has been taking initiative to provide training and development programs for developing better employment relations. The employment relationships should not be accepted as a statement of fashion for any of the organization. It helps to resolve the conflicts and distributes the power in an equal manner. The healthy employment relations will be related with several aspects such as economics, psychology, law and sociology. At organization the Unions are also being formed to improve the working conditions at work place on behalf of the workers. It acts as mediators and helps to negotiate where management and workers are unable to arrive at conclusions. The issues related to poor wages, unsafe working conditions, and labor welfare benefits are being handled with the Trade Unions. In my opinion the trade unions can request the government to support them by creating new policies for promoting their activities. The membership fees must be paid to get the Trade unions registered by Government because it deals for the purpose of collective bargaining process (Compare Info base Limited 2012). Most of the times employers think that registration of Trade unions are unnecessary and it gives birth to the issues and workers involve in social loafing process at workplace. It depends upon the wish of the management whether they want to have unions at their workplace. For managing several changes related in terms of technology and policies related to the workplace it requires healthy employment relation. The trade unions should not go beyond the law for representing their demand in front of management and Government. It creates a negative image and unions are being protested in such case. As an HR Consultant I have been commissioned by the Unite Trade union to access the probable changing role of trade union movement in United Kingdom over next ten years. Unite is the largest Union of United Kingdom. The members of unite are located within the United region. It represents that every member’s interest is duly cared at local, regional and national level (Onwards Unite 2008). It is the modern type of union and was formed by merging the two unions known as T&G and Amicus. The main purpose for forming Unite was to cope up with the challenges and protect the employee’s interests at workplace by fighting for them and treating them on the basis of equality. It has also been building the strong relationships with the other unions of the world. The reasons why Unite is considered by the employees and employers is to maintain healthy industrial relations between workers who registered as the members of unions earn 8% more in terms of wages. Unite has been assisting in providing more holidays where the workers are working. It states that places that are unionized take care of the employee’s health and better training is being provided to them. The activities such as discrimination are being avoided and more job security is being provided to the members of Unite. The decisions related to their members are being treated on the basis of equality and fairness at the workplace. On 2007 Unite the trade union of United Kingdom was being formed to protect the interest of the workers and create awareness regarding their human rights which was being not provided by the employers at the workplace. The number of memberships was less because at initial stage it was unable to reach to the unorganized sectors of United Kingdom. The roles and responsibilities of Unite was to grow the membership up to 100%, provide the services to its members in terms of legal helpline, claims provided for the injured members, offer better jobs and etc. It has been stated that before 20 years 50% of workers participated in union based activity and today it is just about 23%. Unite Trade Union Membership has been changing or declining because changes have been brought in the policies by government and employers. The employees have been directly interacting with the employers for discussing their issues related to the workplace. It is believed by the employers of United Kingdom that Unite is being too much involved in political issues and even members need to pay registration fees for enrolling themselves as the member of Unite. It is being perceived by the employers at United Kingdom that Unions favor in illegal activities such as strikes and destroying the assets at workplace. The employers have been using technology to replace the human or manual effort for the difficult work. In an era of globalization the employers at United Kingdom think that Trade unions are unnecessary at workplace and it should be avoided. Even to develop a healthy employment relationship employees now prefer to spend more time on technological activities which creates fun environment. I think that the large number of layoffs, competition and deregulation has brought drastic changes in the Unite Trade Unions at United Kingdom (Crown 2012). According to BIS which means Business, Innovation and Skills the membership of Trade Union fell by 2.7% in 2009. At private sector it reduced by 0.9% and at public sector it reduced by 0.3%. It is stated that the recent and upcoming generations will prefer to work in organizations where there is direct involvement of management and third parties are eliminated from the workplace. The service sector will be preferred more as compared to the old manufacturing sectors where there is existence of the human power. The number of trade union members increases to 6.5 million on 2011 in the private sector. In public sectors it is increasing in at a slow rate because of several reasons like pension strikes and etc (Respective Authors 2011). If we see the trends of the trade unions the employers have the opinion that Unions are unnecessary and it creates problem for the management at workplace. According to them it is seen that Unions are demanding in nature and if it’s not being fulfilled it results in strikes and forces management for the Lockout which directly hampers the productivity and economy of the country. The changes in the Labor market and government policy also hamper the functioning of the Trade Unions. In future MNC‘s and domestic countries will prefer less union based activities in their organization because the advanced technology will be used by the manufactures. The employees need to have specialized skill and knowledge related to those areas. In future Employers will prefer to outsource the workers from the vendors, consultants and from the staff Augmented companies which will reduce the union based activities at United Kingdom. According to PEST which means political, economical, social and technological factors related with internal and external aspects, shows that internal factors like deregulation and changes in the economy will affect the Unions existence at United Kingdom. The external factors will be related to entry of MNC’S at United Kingdom and migration of the local labor to other countries. Young people don’t prefer to join the unions because they think to interact with the management directly, are more tech savvy and they think that Unions based activities are merged with political activities which does not provide any interest to them(Jeff Grabelsky 2005). The next Generation of employees will prefer to work in organizations where the employees will be valued and management will provide all the facilities for their welfare and also being the member of Trade unions will not be preferred by them. They will like to work in service based industry because the will be matching their requirements with the changes made in terms of the latest technologies in the global market (Michael Peel 2003). As a member of my Team I found that Unite as Trade union of United Kingdom is working for the welfare activities of the employees. Though the employers do not prefer to have unions at their workplace but still is being preferred by the employees at workplace.
It can be concluded by me that Trade Unions at United Kingdom are supposed to build a healthy employment relationship within the employees and the management of the organization. At olden times in United Kingdom the manufacturing Jobs were given more importance. Today due to several changes in the technology, migration of the employees, labor policy, government policies and increasing number of skilled workforce in the market have brought changes in membership of Trade Unions. The young youths like to work in service sectors such as insurance, healthcare, and education in coming 10 years and in future. It is found that during the downturns in the economy the service sector is supposed to quite stable as compared to the manufacturing sectors. The modern generation like to earn more as paid according to the global standard and want to have tension free life. The employees at United Kingdom want to grow in career by performing their best at workplace. The youths believe that to get registered with the Trade unions is a time consuming process and more of a protesting activity. The trade unions must be there if it is required for developing healthy employment relation by engaging the workers to perform their best by the process of motivation. The employees who are registered in the Trade unions should not involve in the social loafing process and hamper the productivity of an organization. The existence of Trade Unions will help to protect the employers and as well as the employees and it should focus on increasing the productivity by increasing the profits and reducing the costs (Laura Kearsley 2011). The government of United Kingdom should also intervene and maintain certain checkpoints regarding the labor policies, employment policies and the trade union policies so that the employees can be protected from being exploited in term of physical and monetary aspects. The employers should ensure that maximum satisfaction should be provided by them which will motivate them, there should be strong Human resource policy which will promote peace for the employees. The Trade Unions should help the employees during problems where organization operates on the union basis. The issues related to poor wages, unsafe working conditions, and labor welfare benefits should be handled with the mutual understanding of the organizations and Trade Unions. It should not be the objective of Trade unions to force employers for the unwanted activities at work place. According to me Unions should create a better working platform for management and the workers.
