History assignment on : Racism – Australia
Racism in Australia has been quite evident from the year 1788 when the Europeans arrived in the state. Racism was quite prevalent which led to the expansion & forced the people not belonging to this region to the various neighboring territories. In the late 19th Century, there was war between Australian & European settlers known as the “Australian Frontier Wars” took place due to this reason (Howie, 2010).
According to one of the movies on racism – “Rabbit Proof Fence” states a true story of how the white people took away the Aborigines from their families. The white people were to breed amongst the white people. This movie illustrates the journey of three girls who were aborted away from their families. They were taken approximately 1200 Kms away & breed them with the white people. One of the most remarkable aspects of this movie was that, the half cast (white people) were made responsible to build a fence on the way which would lead to four different ways i.e. North, South, East & West Australia (Howie, 2010). This movie highlights the fact that, the white people had erected the fence as they wanted to keep away from the “rabbits” that belonged to Europe. The movie also highlights the fact that various strategies have been formulated in order to breed out the non whites from the country. The movie refers to one of the best movies which states the Australian society has been declining due to the rise in the levels of racism.
According to the article written by Howie, 2010 on the topic “Admitting racism problem as the first step to solution” also highlights the various facts that Australia has been referred to as quite a tolerant country in accepting the different types of cultures with open minds. According to the survey conducted in the year 2009, it was reported that out of 10 people only one did not believe on the fact that, people belonging to different religions, cultures, races would be regarded as equal in all respects. In the same survey, approximately 37% (Walsch, 2011) of the Australians respondents believed on their old ways i.e. white v/s black. Most of the Australians stated that, they were not at all comfortable with certain communities such as Muslims, people belonging to mid East Asians, etc (Williams, 2007).It is not at all evident from the objective or the goal statement of Australian Government that, policies or procedures have been listed which would help the Australians not to consider racial problems amongst the people belonging to different caste, (Dunn, 2003) creed, religion, etc. Proper laws must be formulated which would help in order to order to decrease the levels of racism in the country.
The article also highlights the fact that, the Australian Government would hang up the visa of the Afghan & Sri Lankan seekers. By this it is quite evident that, Australians are not at all comfortable with the people belonging to various communities (Dunn, 2003).
The book on Racism in Australia also states the various innovative ways through which discrimination or racism in Australia could be removed or diminished. It has been seen that, one of the innovative measures to remove or diminish the racism would be through collecting the various types of data on the same (Walsch, 2011). Approximately 16% of the people surveyed have experienced the same at their workplaces. It is quite evident that, people are effacing different types of discrimination at their workplace (Howie, 2010). Almost one fifth of the entire Australian population has been facing the same. It has been noted that, highest percentages of racism is seen at one of the good workplaces as well. The survey shows that, approximately 29%, 35.6%, 21%, 23% (Walsch, 2011) of discrimination in case of racism has been evident from the various sectors such as workplace, education, housing & policing respectively. It has also been stated that, Men face high levels of racism as compared to the females in the various sectors. It has also been seen that, various forms of racism have been seen in the field of sport, streets & everyday life (Walsch, 2011).On the whole Australia has been quite tolerant & an open minded society which has been supporting various types of cultures but does not regard discrimination in terms of different races. Government of Australia should ensure that, various human rights should be formulated which would help in order to safe guard the rights, etc (Walsch, 2011). Government shall ensure that various human rights should be given to each & every individual irrespective of the caste, creed, religion, etc. The human rights should be protected & people not abiding by the same should be punished under the Human Rights Act laid down by the Australian Government (Dunn, 2003).
It cannot be stated as to how much the Australian society is open minded & tolerate as one of the survey reports states that, the Australian are experiencing high levels of harassment & racial disgrace. The report also states that how much the Australian society is tolerant towards the millions of Muslim women who have been experiencing harassment from the stranger’s terrorists living various kilometers away (Williams, 2007).
Hence, the article ends up by saying that sorting out the racial disputes in Australia would help in order to upgrade the society. Resolving the problem of racism in the Australian society would help in order to upgrade the individuals & their thinking (Walsch, 2011).
